Showboat Majestic arrives at its new home on the Ohio River in New Richmond

The historic Showboat Majestic arrived at its new home on the Ohio River in the village of New Richmond, Ohio.Residents excitedly welcomed in the historic riverboat to New Richmond at around 7 p.m. Wednesday.In 2018, Cincinnati announced it would sell the showboat, which has floated on the Ohio River for nearly a century. Bidding began at $10,000, and after 88 bids, the auction was finally concluded in April 2019 - with the ship officially selling for $110,100.Built in 1923, the Majestic is 42 feet wide, 150 feet long and two stories tall. Cincinnati bought it from Indiana University in 1967. The ship is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.Village Administrator Greg Roberts told WLWT that Showboat Majestic will call New Richmond home for at least 10 years. He said the New Richmond Village Council approved the 10-year lease at a meeting last Tuesday.Bob Lees, president of Renaissance New Richmond Inc. and owner of Front Street Cafe in New Richmond, said the village hopes to have concerts, live shows and entertainment onboard Showboat Majestic eventually once the COVID-19 pandemic improves. Events on the riverboat will be up to the owner of the boat, however, Lees said bringing the riverboat to New Richmond was a "major move in a good direction." He believes the historic riverboat will "fit perfectly" with the rich history of New Richmond.Roberts agreed. He believes Showboat Majestic will be a "centerpiece on redevelopment of the riverfront."
