LAPD investigating use of excessive force during arrest

The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating whether officers used excessive force during last month's arrest of New Orleans Pelicans center and former Moeller High School standout Jaxson Hayes.

Chief Michael Moore told reporters "the possibility of force being applied to the suspect's neck during the use of force in taking him into custody." The police chief added that Hayes "was complaining of having trouble breathing, saying that he could not breathe."

New Orleans Pelicans center Jaxson Hayes (10) in the fourth quarter of an NBA game against the Golden State Warriors at Chase Center, Friday, May 14, 2021, in San Francisco, California.

Hayes was tasered and arrested in the Los Angeles area after an altercation with a police officer, the LAPD confirmed.

TMZ Sports reported Wednesday that video it obtained is from a man who recorded part of the incident.

A voice is heard, saying "Stop. Get your hands off him now. I’ve seen him choking." Additional officers then arrive.

An LAPD news release said Hayes, 21, was arrested for resisting arrest. Hayes and one officer were treated at a hospital for injuries, per the release, and a female at the location declined to cooperate with officers' investigation into the original domestic dispute call.
