Brewers claim former Reds pitcher off waivers from Yankees

The Milwaukee Brewers announced Tuesday they’ve claimed right-handed former Cincinnati Reds pitcher Sal Romano off waivers from the New York Yankees.

In two appearances for the Yankees, Romano struck out three of the 10 batters he faced, and allowed three hits.

New York Yankees starting pitcher Sal Romano (68) throws a pitch during the sixth inning against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field on July 29.

Last month, the Yankees announced that pitcher Asher Wojciechowski was designated for assignment, and the team selected Romano from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Both pitched for the Reds in 2017, Wojciechowski's only season in Cincinnati.

Romano, designated for assignment by the Reds earlier this season after he pitched in 83 games over five big-league seasons in Cincinnati, was signed by the Yankees in May to a minor-league deal and assigned to the RailRiders.

Romano, 27, elected free agency after clearing waivers. He posted a 5.23 ERA in 14 appearances for the Reds this season, and a 5.15 ERA for the team since his 2017 debut for Cincinnati. He was selected by the Reds in the 23rd round of the 2011 draft.
