The crosstown rivalry between Ryle and Cooper will take on new meaning Monday night.
The battle of Union will feature two of the top six teams in Kentucky high school girls basketball as voted by the Associated Press.
Ryle, 13-2 and the three-time reigning Ninth Region champion, will take a short trip through back roads to take on the Jaguars, who are 12-2 overall. The winner will clinch the top seed in the 33rd District Tournament.
Ryle has won six in a row and Cooper has won eight straight, and Ryle will next host Anderson County on Thursday. Anderson County is ranked No. 1 in the state.
Ryle, who is still the reigning state champion after winning it all in 2019, will travel next week to two teams who are receiving votes in this week’s poll: Bethlehem and Paul Laurence Dunbar.
Notre Dame remains tied with Cooper for sixth. The Pandas have not played since Feb. 9 due to COVID reasons.
Covington Catholic remains in third place in the boys poll. The Colonels, 16-2 overall, have won nine straight.
St. Henry is seventh. CovCath and St. Henry will meet Tuesday in Erlanger, then CovCath will host 12th-ranked Ashland Blazer on Friday before playing at sixth-ranked Bowling Green Saturday.
