Purple People Bridge meets fundraising goal, open by Thanksgiving

After closing in May due to falling stones, the Purple People Bridge connecting Cincinnati to Kentucky will be fully reopened by Thanksgiving, officials said Tuesday.

A total of $354,000 will go toward temporary and permanent repairs to the bridge.

Much of the bridge has been open from the Kentucky-side since July, but pedestrians have been unable to completely cross the bridge.

The Newport Southbank Bridge Company said in a press release that the money came from four major donors:

  • Devou Good Foundation contributed $154,000
  • The John and Sue Topits Foundation contributed $100,000
  • The RC Durr Foundation contributed $50,000
  • The Newport Foundation contributed $13,000

Another $37,000 came from the Newport Southbank Bridge Company.

The bridge will be temporarily reopen Saturday for the American Cancer Society Making Strides Greater Cincinnati fundraising run for breast cancer research, officials said, but then will close again.
