TOKYO – Katie Ledecky, the most decorated female swimmer of all time, won the women’s 800-meter freestyle for the third consecutive Olympic Games.
Ledecky won in 8:12.57, beating silver medalist Australian Ariarne Titmus by 1.26 seconds. Italy's Simona Quadarella took the bronze in 8:18.35.
With the victory, Ledecky, 24, closed out her 2020 Olympics with two golds and two silvers. She has said she is going to keep swimming to the 2024 Olympics in Paris. On the NBC broadcast after her race, she said, "Maybe, '28, we'll see."
She won her first 800 in a surprise as a 15-year-old at the 2012 London Olympics, then dominated the race in Rio as part of a four-gold medal rout of those Games.
Earlier in the week, she won the inaugural women’s 1,500 freestyle, anchored the U.S. women’s 4x200 freestyle relay to a satisfying silver medal, and won silver in the 400 freestyle when she was beaten by Titmus.
