The FC Cincinnati Foundation opened its fourth mini pitch on Monday at the North Avondale Recreation Center. FC Cincinnati President Jeff Berding and athletes Brenner and Brandon Vazquez attended the grand opening event.
"Mini pitches provide a safe place for children to play soccer. We're thrilled to partner with CRC (Cincinnati Recreation Commission) on this location and the North Avondale community for their support and the children of the North Avondale recreation center," Berding said.
Director of Cincinnati Recreation Commission Daniel Betts also spoke at the event, noting the continued work the commission plans to do with the FCC Foundation.
"We're going to do more of these, we want to see one or two of these in every neighborhood," Betts said.
Berding said the foundation's goal is to open 10 mini pitches by 2024. Beside the North Avondale location, other mini pitches are located in the West End Lincoln Rec Center, Hartwell Rec Center, and in Common Ground all-inclusive park in Mason.
Vice President of Cincinnati Recreation Commission Michael Patton said the mini pitches will not only provide a safe space for children to play, but will likely play a role in expanding the game on a wider scale..
"These kind of facilities and exposure for kids will do a lot for the game not only locally but hopefully in this country," Patton said. "We'll see a lot more kids learning to express themselves in this type of way."
