Starting on Monday, July 26, northbound drivers crossing the Brent Spence Bridge will be forced to stay in their lane as they cross the bridge and either go north on one interstate or the other as they enter Ohio.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said in a release that work to create the changes will shut the bridge down to one lane northbound from Friday night until Monday morning. When the bridge reopens on July 26, there will be two lanes northbound open on the bridge, according to the release.
The bridge carries Interstates 75 and 71 across the Ohio River between Cincinnati and Covington, Kentucky. Ongoing maintenance on the bridge is scheduled to end in November, and is about 50 percent complete, says KYTC.
At 10 p.m. Friday, the bridge will be shut down to one north lane starting, according to the KYTC release. There will be two lanes of traffic restored on the northbound lanes by 5 a.m. Sunday.
Police will enforce rolling 15-minute roadblocks from 11 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Saturday to allow workers to create the new routing for northbound drivers on the bridge, according to the release. All northbound traffic will be stopped during the 15-minute northbound rolling roadblocks.
KYTC advised people driving north over the weekend to plan and know their route before approaching the bridge.
A tarp covering the center spans of the bridge, there for painting and maintenance, has been removed.
New northbound rules Monday
“Once the work this weekend is completed, the new travel pattern will be in place and changing lanes on the bridge will not be possible," said Cory Wilson, branch manager for KYTC’s District 6 office in the release.
Northbound traffic in the far left lane will have to proceed onto I-75 north. Drivers in the far right lane will have to go onto I-71 north.
"The two center lanes on I-71/75 northbound across the bridge will be closed,” Wilson said in the release.
