New exhibit featuring Black artists opening at Freedom Center


A collaboration is bringing opportunity to artists of color."We got some representation this year that we were lacking," Brent Billingsley said.Billingsley said his art and the rest of the displays have deep meaning and impact."It should generate something that should spring you to action. It should make you want to be better and do better. It should make you feel I'm not in this thing by myself. And this series should make you feel like an American," Billingsley said.He is one of the artists who are a part of a new partnership between the Freedom Center and Artswave. "Truth and Reconciliation" features black and brown artists like Twyana Davis. She was behind bars when she created her piece."The environment was dark. It was just horrific however I always try to find a way to bring light out of the situation. And so I created this piece and so this piece has the feelings and my emotions," Davis said.There are 27 different artists that make up all different types of mediums making up the five installations that will be at the Freedom Center until October.This weekend, there are film screenings and artists will be talking about their pieces."You get a chance to run into the artist and ask them why they created this piece or that piece. This is the weekend to do it," said Janice Liebenberg, Director of Equitable Arts Advancement of Artswave.
