Long-time Cincinnati Reds play-by-play announcer Marty Brennaman replied via Twitter to an apology ESPN's Stephen A. Smith made on First Take, showing support for Smith and adding that he wished his son's employers "had been as forgiving" as Smith's.
Brennaman's tweet:
Smith apologized to the Asian community and the Asian-American community after suggesting earlier that Major League Baseball can't market Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani because Ohtani uses an interpreter for most interviews conducted in English.
Brennaman's son, Thom, resigned from his position as play-by-play announcer for the Reds and FOX Sports Ohio (renamed Bally Sports Ohio earlier this year) last September, about one month after his on-air apology - which included a Nick Castellanos home-run call - for using a homophobic slur during a Reds-Royals broadcast.
Thom Brennaman appeared on comedian Josh Potter's podcast earlier this month to discuss how he's slowly come around to accept that people enjoy joking about the now-famous "drive into deep left field by Castellanos" call he made.
