Elm Street will be closed between Fifth and Sixth streets for more than a year beginning Monday to make way for demolition of the former Millennium Hotel complex, the city of Cincinnati announced Thursday.
Crews will eventually be using cranes and other heavy equipment to tear down a 34-story hotel tower and a five-story annex building to the north along Sixth Street and a 24-story tower to the south along Fifth Street.
The skywalk connecting the old Millennium to the Duke Energy Convention Center over Elm Street will also be removed.
Mechanical demolition of the north tower is expected to start in the first week of June, followed by the south tower the week after, according to Tom Millikin, a spokesman for the Port of Cincinnati Greater Cincinnati Development Authority.
