One of the trees snapped back and fell across Wyman’s left leg. He tried to free himself but was stuck.He said he was trapped under the tree for about an hour, screaming for help. His leg was broken and he was afraid he was bleeding out. No one was around to come to his rescue, so Wyman decided he had to do it himself.“I was going to get out of there no matter what,” Wyman said in an interview. “I didn’t want to die in the woods.”He fashioned a tourniquet out of a shoelace and a power-saw wrench and placed it above his injury. Wyman then took his three-inch pocket knife and amputated his own leg. Once free of the tree, Wyman’s ordeal was far from over.
