A school custodian in North Carolina got a special surprise from those he cares for every day.Last year, Raymond Brown, who works at White Oak Elementary in Edenton, was nominated for the North Carolina School Hero award. According to its website, the winner gets a monetary prize. Brown got a lot of votes, WTKR reports, but didn't win.So, a mom in the area decided to recognize Brown for all the work he did, the news outlet reports. Last week, Brown thought he was going to celebrate his 38th wedding anniversary with his family. But people from the community ended up surprising him."He’s kind of our rock, our foundation of what we do here at school. He’s the first one here way before the rest of us," said Michelle Newsome, the White Oak Elementary School principal. "What makes Mr. Brown the most special is that he works really hard to build relationships with the students, sincere relationships that many of our students would not otherwise have."Parent Adrian Wood was the one who rallied support, raising money for Brown after he didn't win the award. They ended up raising $35,000 for their school hero, with donations coming in locally, along with from other parts of the country."We need to recognize those same people that might not be on the big screen but are doing really good work and get overlooked," Wood said.Brown told WTKR he plans to use the money buy food for the staff and treat students to ice cream.
