The faithful can again pray the steps at Holy Cross-Immaculata Church in Mount Adams, on Good Friday, says the parish in an announcement this week.
The church is asking prayer pilgrims to consider praying the steps and visiting the church throughout Holy Week, to spread out crowds throughout Holy Week from Sunday, March 28, to Saturday, April 3.
"Praying the steps" on Good Friday has been a tradition in Mount Adams since 1861, when the Church of the Immaculate Conception, as it was known then, was newly built and the steps were wooden. People stop and say a short prayer on each of the 85 steps as they ascend to the church. The tradition was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19.
The hilltop church at 30 Guido Street will additionally be open for private prayer from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. between Monday, March 29, and Thursday, April 1.
Masks will be required in the church to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, and social distancing will be observed.
After the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, the church will remain open all night and all day Friday until 11:00 p.m. The only Good Friday worship service this year will be at 7 p.m.
All guidelines for social distancing and occupancy in the church will be observed, and masks will be required.
