As a former Winton Woods High School standout, Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive back Mike Edwards already had plenty of fans in Greater Cincinnati.
But the Super Bowl LV champion scheduled to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Wednesday's Cincinnati Reds-Pittsburgh Pirates game at Great American Ball Park likely endeared himself to even more sports fans in the area with the tweet he sent a short time after Major League Baseball announced its two-game suspension of Reds outfielder Nick Castellanos for his role in Saturday's benches-clearing incident against the St. Louis Cardinals:
Castellanos has appealed the suspension. He is eligible to play until the appeal process is completed, and he hit a go-ahead home run in the Reds' win Monday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Based on the Reds' reaction to MaCio Teague's effort in helping the Baylor Bears to a national championship on Monday night, the former Walnut Hills High School standout also is a strong candidate to throw out the first pitch at an Reds game.
Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Trevor Bauer, who won the National League Cy Young Award last season for the Reds, criticized MLB's suspension of Castellanos with a tweet.
Earlier, New York Post columnist and MLB Network insider Joel Sherman questioned the Castellanos suspension - without suspending anyone else or even fining Cardinals pitcher Jake Woodford - in a pair of tweets.
Reds manager David Bell said he was "disappointed" that Castellanos was suspended and fined for "aggressive actions and for instigating a benches-clearing incident" during the fourth inning Saturday. Castellanos also was the only player ejected from the game.
