The Carolina Panthers' acquisition earlier this week of quarterback Sam Darnold from the New York Jets was discussed at length on ESPN's Get Up on Tuesday, and NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky explained that he believes Darnold has more talent than Cincinnati Bengals quarterback and 2020 NFL Draft No. 1 pick Joe Burrow.
"The first thing that hits my mind are the names Ryan Tannehill and Joe Burrow," Orlovsky said on the show. "Tannehill ... the different player, the different quarterback he became when he got out from underneath Adam Gase and went to a healthy situation. (He) went to a situation that suited his skillset better, was much more supportive when it comes to the people around him. And we've watched Ryan Tannehill become a top 10 quarterback. And then Joe Burrow: It's important to remind everybody that going into that last year at LSU, Joe Burrow was like a fifth-, sixth-, seventh-round fringe draft pick. He gets one year with Joe Brady that becomes an impactful kind of development in his process, and he's the No. 1 pick. Now Joe Brady didn't give Joe Burrow something that he did not have already inside of him. He did not just give him that talent. What he did was unlock it. And that's what I expect Joe Brady - the offensive coordinator for the Panthers - to do for Sam Darnold. ... And I would argue that Sam Darnold is more talented than Joe Burrow. I've got this player that's got all this talent. It's my job as a coach to unlock it. And one of the things that I think is really important to point out is Carolina has a lot of recent college coaches on their staff. ... College coaches focus a lot on development, a lot on teaching. ... I would argue Sam Darnold has never had that. He has never had that groundwork, foundational teaching that is based upon development. This will be the first time Sam Darnold has really good coaching based on development with a supporting cast of talent, and I expect that to allow him to take off."
In April 2020, Orlovsky said of the five quarterbacks drafted since 2018, the only QB he'd take before Burrow would be Darnold.
