The official date of Juneteenth is June 19, but the Cincinnati area has events and celebrations planned throughout the entire month. The holiday celebrates the June 19, 1865, emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States.

Juneteenth Jubilee, daylong celebration at three venues across Springboro, with shuttle service running between all three venues. From 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at Springboro Area Museum (110 S. Main St.) you can pick up a map to explore real sites of the Underground Railroad on a self-guided tour. Volunteers at each site will tell stories of Quaker ancestors who helped slaves on the path to freedom. World premiere piece highlights the spirit of resistance and activism of a part of American history that has often been overlooked: The largest insurrection of enslaved Africans in North America, which happened Sept. 9, 1739, in South Carolina on the banks of the Stono River. $6. cincinnatiarts.org.
Urban Roots, a new podcast on Black Cincinnati, airs a special series bi-weekly from June 5-July 17. Series weaves community voices, historical interviews and archival audio to tell the histories of Avondale, Evanston and South Cumminsville.
