The Ohio bill that would allow college athletes to earn money from their name, image and likeness passed unanimously out of committee Tuesday to the full Senate following testimony by Ohio State football coach Ryan Day on its behalf.

The Senate Workforce and Higher Education Committee advanced SB 187, which was introduced by Niraj Antani (R-Miamisburg).

Day told state Senators on the committee that quick passage of the bill was important so that programs from other states that have passed NIL legislation wouldn't have a recruiting advantage over Ohio schools. Several states, including Florida, Georgia and Alabama, have passed legislation granting NIL rights to their college athletes, effective July 1.

When Antani introduced the bill May 24 at a news conference with Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith, he said he was confident Ohio would pass its NIL legislation by that date.
