It's been nearly five years since the Big 12 Conference decided not to expand, ending the University of Cincinnati's aggressive effort to join the power conference.
But West Virginia University basketball coach Bob Huggins, one of the Big 12's most prominent figures, says his former school is much better positioned now to make the leap if the conference ever revisits expansion.
Huggins gives the credit to Bearcats football coach Luke Fickell, who's won 33 games the last three seasons and has UC as a projected top-10 team this year.
"I think UC being in the Big 12 back then was a pipe dream," Huggins told The Enquirer's "That's So Cincinnati" podcast. "It's an incredible football league. At that time – and I don't mean this in the wrong way – but UC football wasn't very good. And it did nothing to enhance the league from a football perspective.
