Major League Soccer's ongoing international break has offered thrilling matches in North America but it's also presented MLS coaching staffs with a delicate balancing act.
For most MLS clubs, about three weeks will have passed between league matches, which resume next week. Consequently, managers and athletic trainers have been tailoring workloads across their respective rosters during the prolonged break from regular-season action.
FC Cincinnati head coach Jaap Stam and his staff are managing a wide variety of individual situations within their team after just one player, Allan Cruz, departed FCC to be with his Costa Rican national team.
Cruz, of course, was busy with the Costa Ricans and missed a decisive penalty kick in a Concacaf Nations League semifinal match against Mexico June 3.
Cruz made three appearances while playing with "Los Ticos," coming off the bench against Mexico and Honduras in Nations League play while also making a substitute appearance against the U.S. men's national team in the Wednesday, June 9, friendly.
