Uber driver Abdelkadre Khamis Ahmat replays the night in late May he says he was verbally and physically assaulted. With video of his interaction with passenger Michael Winterman, he stood with CAIR-Ohio in a press conference Tuesday afternoon. CAIR-Ohio fights for the civil liberties and understanding of American Muslims. From the video, Ahmat can be seen and heard stopping and asking Winterman for directions as he says his app has stopped. Winterman calls 911. “He is threatening me and I’m not getting out unless I know where I’m at in the neighborhood,” Winterman says on video.“No one is threatening you. You are intoxicated,” Ahmat replies. The video continues with Winterman on the phone with 911 calling for police to come help. Ahmat explains all the information he needs to tell dispatch is in his Uber app. “If you don't (expletive) tell me, guess what I’m not getting out of your (expletive) car!” Winterman says on video.“I don’t enjoy watching it and I never wanted to be the person to be sitting here to talk about those things,” Ahmat said.As Winterman gets out of Ahmat’s car after finishing his call to police, he used that racial slur along with telling him that he hopes he gets shot. Ahmat says after Winterman left his car, he fell and then started wiping blood on his car. Winterman did return a phone call to WLWT today saying he was dropped off a block away from his house. As far as the racial slur he used, Winterman says he has Tourette syndrome and had no control over what he was saying. He also says that he didn’t fall and that he was punched and left with multiple broken bones.Winterman did report the incident to Uber just like he threatened. Ahmat says he was terminated the next day. Uber says its policy is to suspend both the driver and passenger while it investigates. Ahmat says he hopes more support from Uber will keep this from happening again. “I was just hoping that this guy can get out of my car and I can just continue doing my job,” Ahmat says. Uber released a statement, which reads, “This is the first we've seen of the video, and what is shown is appalling and unacceptable. Violence and discrimination have no place on the Uber platform. We’ve been attempting to reach out to the driver to get more information since the incident was first reported to us last month. We are reactivating the driver’s account and the rider has been banned from Uber." The Cincinnati City Manager’s office confirmed Tuesday afternoon that Winterman is being charged with one count of ethnic intimidation, which is a misdemeanor.
