Ohio is one step closer to easing fireworks restrictions across the state. The Ohio Senate passed a bill Wednesday that would revise its fireworks laws, allowing for individuals within the state to legally celebrate certain holidays by shooting off fireworks. Senate Bill 112 overwhelmingly passed the Ohio Senate Wednesday and heads to the state House for consideration. Sponsored by Republican Sens. Michael Rulli (Salem) and Terry Johnson (McDermott), the new law would allow individuals to discharge consumer-grade fireworks on several designated holidays or holiday weekends. "Patriotic Americans have been, albeit illegally, shooting off fireworks in this state for as long as I can remember, without the safety measures included in this legislation," said Rulli. "With proper parameters and safety precautions, Ohioans will soon be able to celebrate our holidays safely, while enjoying this time-honored tradition."Rulli said the bill also has implications for Ohio businesses. Under the proposed legislation, Ohioans could celebrate with fireworks on New Year's Eve/Day; Chinese New Year; Cinco de Mayo; Memorial Day Weekend; Juneteenth; July 3,4,5 and the previous and following weekends; Labor Day Weekend; and Diwali.
