Cincinnati Reds second baseman Jonathan India sprinted out of the box, hoping to turn a line drive in the outfield into an extra-base hit. India later said that right after he made contact, he thought he had a chance for a triple.
Instead, the ball landed just over the right field fence. India’s solo home run on Thursday against the Arizona Diamondbacks was both his first career homer and a game-tying swing in a game the Reds eventually lost 14-11.
“It’s a very good feeling,” India said. “I needed that mentally, it’s just a blessing. I’ll remember that forever, it’s my first career home run.”
India made his MLB debut on Opening Day as the Reds everyday second baseman. After his first seven games, India had a .400 batting average and a .934 OPS. But since then, India has gone 4-for-30 at the plate with 11 strikeouts.
