With his Cincinnati Reds teammates playing the Chicago Cubs on Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field, former National League Most Valuable Player Joey Votto was working out at Great American Ball Park in hopes of rejoining them soon.
And while at GABP, he joined Tommy Thrall and Chris Welsh in the Reds' radio broadcast booth for several innings of "Employee No. 19" (as he referred to himself on the air) as play-by-play broadcaster, treating fans and 700 WLW listeners to what can best be described as Joey Votto being Joey Votto.
The Reds shared almost three minutes worth of Votto's stint in the booth during the bottom of the sixth inning, via Twitter:
Votto insisted on sticking around for the remainder of the game because he wanted to be at the mic - he said - when his teammates came back and won. (Which sadly didn't happen.) He also wanted to call one of his teammates' home runs. (Which also sadly didn't happen.)
"You can have the Cubs (home run call). I want the Reds one. I want the Reds one," Votto said to Thrall and Welsh during the broadcast.
After the final out of the Reds' 1-0 loss, Votto joked that he didn't think he'd be back in the booth again because he was "bad luck."
