Multiple people were killed and wounded and the gunman was "down" after a shooting rampage Wednesday at a light rail yard in San Jose, California, authorities said.
Police spokesman Russell Davis said the gunman was dead and that the victims included employees of the rail yard.
"There is a lot of speculation on fatalities," Davis said. “I can’t confirm the exact number of injuries and fatalities, but I will tell you that they are multiple injuries and multiple fatalities in this case,"
Mayor Sam Liccardo said several people were being treated for injuries and that the situation was still being assessed.
"The shooter is no longer a threat, and the facility has been evacuated," Liccardo tweeted. "I will update as more information becomes available."
San Jose Police Media Relations tweeted shortly after 7 a.m. local time that "units are currently at the scene of a shooting in the area of Younger Av and San Pedro St. This is still an active scene and we ask that everyone stay out of the area while we conduct our investigation."
Dozens of police and sheriff's office vehicles swarmed the area. The site is at or near the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) light rail yard – and near the the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office.
VTA spokesperson Brandi Childress wasn't able to confirm the number of those shot or the extent of their injuries.
"We ask for people's prayers," Childress told KGO-TV.
The VTA runs three light rail lines covering more than 40 miles. The agency also operates 70 bus lines in the region.
In San Jose, violent crimes are up nearly 17% so far this year compared with the same time last year, according to police data. Homicides are up 75%.
Nationwide, there have been at least 230 mass shootings in 2021, defined as four or more shot or killed, not including the shooter, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
There have been at least 14 mass murders, defined as four or more people are killed in a single incident, not involving the shooter, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
