Covington Catholic remains at No. 6 in the latest top 25 Kentucky state baseball poll conducted by Prep Baseball Report.
CovCath is 30-1 with a tie heading into the final week of the regular season. CovCath plays at Highlands Tuesday night, which is the third meeting between the rivals this month. CovCath plays at Campbell County Wednesday then faces Holmes in the 35th District semifinals noon Saturday at Beechwood.
CovCath’s only loss was to Moeller May 15, a 3-2 game in nine innings at Great American Ball Park. The Campbell game is a rematch of a 9-9 tie game earlier this season.
The Colonels average nearly nine runs per game on offense and less than three per game on defense. The Colonels are led by Southern Indiana signee Tyler Hutson, who is one of the top hitters and pitchers in Northern Kentucky. On the mound, he is 6-0 with a 1.75 ERA.
Beechwood is 13th in the rankings. The reigning Ninth Region champions are 25-5 after losing to Highlands Monday night. Beechwood had won eight of nine, with the lone loss in that span coming to Dixie Heights May 14, 3-2 in nine innings at Great American Ball Park. Both teams emptied their benches in that game to give all their players playing time on the Cincinnati Reds field.
Beechwood plays at Cooper Tuesday and at Dixie Heights Thursday in a rematch of that game, before hosting Holy Cross 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the 35th District semifinals.
Barring an upset, CovCath and Beechwood will reunite in the 35th District final 1 p.m. Monday at Beechwood. CovCath won 4-3 in their last meeting.
