Gas prices are back down and that's a good sign for Ohioans wanting to take a road trip during the upcoming holiday.
Gas prices in Cincinnati have fallen 2 cents per gallon in the past week, according to GasBuddy. The average price is $2.86, but despite the drop, gas prices in Cincinnati are 89.2 cents per gallon higher than a year ago.
Gasbuddy said the national average price of gasoline is $3.02, down 1.9 cents per gallon in the last week. The national average is up 14.0 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands $1.07 a gallon higher than a year ago.
Memorial Day travel
"In the lead up to Memorial Day, we haven't seen gas prices come down much, though with oil's recent move lower, we should start to see more drops at the pump materialize in the days ahead," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy.
"For those hitting the road, we should see prices inch lower in the coming week through at least Memorial Day, so motorists need not rush to fill their tanks as the drop in oil prices should manifest into lower gas prices as we begin the summer driving season."
AAA said it expects 1.4 million Ohioans to travel during the Memorial Day holiday this year.
"This represents an 86% return of those who traveled pre-pandemic, in 2019, when a record number of Ohioans traveled for the holiday weekend," AAA said.
AAA survey of Ohioans found that 61% of respondents are considering or planning to take a trip this summer.
“Optimism coinciding with the COVID-19 vaccine rollout and growing consumer confidence are fueling a strong desire to travel this summer as the US takes steps toward putting the pandemic behind us,” said Jenifer Moore, AAA spokeswoman. “The AAA poll shows that Ohioans have a pent-up demand for quick get-a-ways and even longer, more extravagant trips – so called ‘Revenge Travel.’”
