Cincinnati post-pandemic operations budget set for Tuesday release

Cincinnati City Solicitor Paula Boggs Muething speaks about serving as interim City Manager, June 16, 2020.

Cincinnati City Manager Paula Boggs Muething is expected to unveil the first post-pandemic budget Tuesday.

The process calls for the city manager to draft a budget and pass it to the mayor for changes before going to  Cincinnati City Council for final debate and passage.

The fiscal year 2022 budget, which begins July 1, is due to the state June 30. Muething said last week Mayor John Cranley indicated he will not make changes, allowing it to go directly to council for review.

The 2021 fiscal year operating budget was $411 million.

An April 30 city memo says the UC Economics Center projected tax revenue to come in at $277 million, resulting in a budget deficit of $67.5 million.

Cincinnati City Council set aside $106.8 million in federal stimulus money to help make up for pandemic-related losses, but it's unclear how much of that will be put toward the operating budget.

The city budget relies heavily on earnings tax, which was problematic during the pandemic with people out of work.
