The Enquirer and United Way of Greater Cincinnati have joined forces for the 35th year to help families in need with the Wish List program. This is the seventh of eight stories that will run this month.
Korine Roberson is a licensed professional nurse who finds fulfillment in caring for others.
But when COVID-19 began raging early in 2020, stress and anxiety mounted for the single mother of an 8-year-old. She was working in a nursing home, and vaccines were not yet available. The experience exacerbated the mental health issues she has struggled with for years.
“People were sick. People were dying. It was stressful being in the facility. You’ve got to gown up. You’re constantly worried you might get sick, or someone in your family might get sick, or you might be the person bringing (the virus) into the facility.
“It was just too much.”
Then last January, as she was preparing to begin a 12-hour shift, she felt ill. A positive COVID test followed. Her son, Ryan, moved in with his maternal grandmother while Korine was quarantined alone at her Colerain Township home.
