Why Vs. Cancer has a special meaning for Xavier coach Billy O’Conner

This baseball season is the first of Billy O'Conner's life without his mom, Maureen, who died last August after a lengthy battle with brain cancer. The Xavier University head coach said, "I think about her every game."

From the time he was a boy, baseball has been a constant in Billy O'Conner's life.

And in the beginning, when the ball sat on a tee waiting to be hit, his mom was there. And when the game got more difficult and the ball went faster and flew farther, she was still there.

Maureen "Renie" O'Conner was there when her son won a state championship with Elder High School in 2005, and she watched as he went on to play at Indiana University before finishing his college baseball career at Xavier University.

She saw him work his way up from an assistant coach to now the head coach at Xavier, a post he's held since 2017.

I was lucky to know Renie, too. I was teammates with Billy at Elder and I saw the kindness and love she lived her life with and I learned what a great family she and Bill, her husband of 36 years, raised.
