After a brief hiatus in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Northside will be bringing back its Fourth of July celebrations this year -- though they may look a little different than in past years.The Northside Parade Committee announced on Facebook Tuesday that instead of the typical parade, organizers are planning a house float event inspired by New Orleans’ 2021 Mardi Gras celebration.The house float event will allow will honor the tradition of Northside's Fourth of July celebrations while keeping the community safe, the parade committee said.The event will include walking routes, a sticker passport for kids and small-scale block parties. There will also be prizes for the most creative and absurd porch decorations within the neighborhood limits. Organizers will be creating kits of affordable decorations for people and those will be going on sale soon. If you'd like to be notified of when those kits will be going on sale, click here."There are many factors that go into planning the annual parade, including permits for gathering and local safety guidelines. While the CDC and other authorities have begun easing restrictions for fully vaccinated people, these were not implemented in time to move forward with the typical parade or the Rock ‘n Roll Carnival, our partner in making the parade happen," the Northside Parade Committee wrote on Facebook.Organizers are also looking for Northside residents who live on short streets to take on a block captain role.
