One of the memorable parts of Wade Miley's no-hitter in Cleveland is that he pitched with a temporary Hulk tattoo on his right forearm.
Miley's 4-year-old son, Jeb, put the temporary tattoo on his forearm, and he pointed it out in his postgame interview afterward. Miley wanted it on his shoulder so he could hide it, but his young son said it had to be on the back of his hand or his forearm.
"I probably could've hid it if I wouldn't have said anything that day," Miley said. "It was a special moment. He told me when I got home from Colorado, he said, 'dad, I'm famous.' You know, it's cool to hear him say that and just try to be involved. It's actually made him like baseball more. So that's pretty cool for me."
Miley confirmed he will have another Hulk temporary tattoo on his arm for his start Wednesday against the San Francisco Giants. What's special for his young son is that other pitchers wanted to be a part of it.
Sonny Gray had a temporary Thor tattoo on his shoulder during his start on Monday. Luis Castillo was expected to have a Hawkeye tattoo for Tuesday night.
"Sonny wore the tattoo (Monday), wore the Thor, but he wore it on his shoulder and I explained to him that it doesn't work if you hide it from the world," Miley said. "You've got to put it on your forearm. Maybe Jeb will put his next one on for him to see if Jeb's got the superpowers.
"We're going to check all the boxes, for sure."
Miley never imagined the temporary "Avengers" tattoos would take off as they did after the no-hitter. He didn't plan to bring it up in his postgame interview until he saw it while talking.
Amir Garrett's wife provided temporary tattoos for pitchers, which were waiting in their lockers when they arrived home on Monday from their road trip.
There are, however, some characters that are off-limits.
"Jeb's very, let's say, he's a little selfish," Miley said. "He doesn't want to give anyone Spider-Man. He doesn't want to give anyone Iron Man. The cool, cool characters, my man ain't ready to give up. He's not willing to part with them just yet. I tried to talk him into, 'I like Iron Man, maybe I can use Iron Man.' He's not there yet. I'm stuck on the Hulk for right now."
Teammates joked with Miley that he needed to get a permanent Hulk tattoo after his no-hitter. When Miley's dad, Wendell, saw a glimpse of the temporary tattoo during Miley's no-hitter, he thought it was real.
"I was almost frustrated because I’ve always told Wade I don’t want tattoos," Wendell Miley said. "I’m not a tattoo person. I was like, ‘My God, he still went and got a tattoo on his forearm.’ When he showed what it was, we just busted out laughing. It was so funny. I could understand it because Jeb, he loves his characters so much."
SENZEL, MOUSTAKAS SIT: Nick Senzel, who started Monday's game at third base, was out of the lineup Tuesday because of knee soreness. He showed a hint of a limp when he was running.
"He’s dealt with a few different things," Cincinnati Reds Manager David Bell said. "He had a bit of a groin injury, a shoulder. He’s getting through both of those. A little bit of knee soreness (Monday) and that’s why he’s not in the lineup. Nothing serious, thankfully, because he’s playing great. He’ll be back in a matter of a day or two into the lineup, but he’s available.”
Moustakas came off the bench for a plate appearance and an inning at first base on Monday, but he continues to deal with a right heel bruise.
"That injury, he was in a lot of pain," said Bell, who noted Moustakas was available to pinch-hit on Sunday. "He’s getting there. It’s just slower and there’s really nothing he can do to speed it up. We’ll have him off the bench. Hopefully, he can be back in the lineup the next day or so."
VOTTO ACTIVE: Joey Votto will have a follow-up X-ray on his broken left thumb Tuesday or Wednesday to make sure things are healing correctly, but he did some baseball activities prior to Tuesday's game.
Votto ran the bases in a team-wide base-running drill. He didn't bring a glove, but he caught some short tosses from coaches as he seemingly worked on his footwork at first base.
