After suffering through a shortened season and limited capacity last summer as a result of COVID-19, Kings Island officials said the 2021 season opening has proved, so far, to be a success.
The Mason, Ohio-based amusement park opened at 11 a.m. on Saturday, with guests welcomed by clear skies and warm weather.
"The combination of perfect weather and our guests’ desires to get back to normal and have fun while making memories at Kings Island made it a very popular day at the park," Chad Showalter, Kings Island's director of communications, said in an email.
Officials declined to disclose the number of guests who turned out Saturday.
Kings Island was open for only 65 days last summer, as the pandemic forced the park to postpone its season opening.
A main attraction this season is Orion, which was unveiled in July. It's only the seventh "giga coaster" in the world, meaning it has a drop of at least 300 feet. The ride also reaches speeds of 90 miles per hour and spans 5,321 feet of track.
The parks has made a number of changes to its reopening protocols for the 2021 season.

Guests are no longer required to wear masks while outdoors, though face coverings are still required for guests age 10 and older when they are indoors.
There are no limits on ride capacity and there are no more temperature checks at the front gate. But there are health screen questionnaires conducted by staff.
Park officials also recommend parties maintain 6-foot social distancing from others.

The park is currently open weekends until Memorial Day weekend, after which it will be open for daily operation, officials said.
