St. George is a small town in southwestern Utah where rain is a rarity and rivers are trickling streams. But in January 2005, a storm dumps 12 inches of rain on the area in 3 days. The usually shallow Santa Clara River swells into a raging muddy torrent. Residents watch helplessly as their homes are swallowed up by the river and find themselves in life-threatening situations.
