A Kenton County jury found a 17-year-old guilty Saturday of murdering his cousin in 2019.Police learned that there was an ongoing fight on Snapchat before the shooting. According to a news release, two teens involving in the shooting were looking for 18-year-old Ke'Ovion SeayTevins' brother but ended up shooting him. In November 2019, 16-year-old Brandon Hambrick and 16-year-old DeAngelo Jones-Smith were indicted on charges of complicity to murder. The Kenton County Commonwealth Attorney said that both teens would be tried as adults.The trial was delayed by the court due to the coronavirus, but it resumed on June 2. Just days before the trial, Jones-Smith pled guilty to the first-degree manslaughter charge and agreed to testify against Hambrick. Jones-Smith is expected to receive a 15 year sentence.When the trial started on June 2, prosecutors explained that Jones-Smith returned his gun in to police days after the shooting. A ballistics test showed that the shell casings didn't match the gun Jones-Smith turned in to police. Officials said Hambrick's gun was never recovered. Witnesses said that Hambrick and Jones-Smith were the only people firing guns at the scene. After the third day of trial, the jurors deliberated for a little more than an hour before announcing the guilty verdict. The jury recommended Hambrick a sentence of 45 years in prison.Hambrick is still being held in the NKY Regional Juvenile Detention Center until his 18th birthday. Sentencing will take place on August 23, 2021.
