The new era at Cincinnati City Hall – with new Mayor Aftab Pureval at the helm – gets its start Wednesday with a vote on a contract for proposed interim City Manager John Curp.
The contract up for a council vote is more lucrative than ones offered to past interim managers.
The city manager runs the city's 17 departments and oversees roughly 6,000 employees.
A review of the contract shows it calls for Curp to be paid $265,000 a year. If he's terminated before a permanent city manager is selected, Curp will receive six months ($132,565) severance, plus accrued sick time.
If Curp stays on with the city in any job – he was city solicitor under Mayor Mark Mallory – he will be paid at 75% of city manager pay, which is $200,000. That pay must be guaranteed for at least two and half years.
Andrew Garth, the current city solicitor, is paid $180,000. The top of the pay range for the city solicitor job is $205,000.
Pureval announced last week that City Manager Paula Boggs Muething would leave that job Jan. 19. He pledged to do a national search to replace Boggs Muething, but said he was selecting Curp as the interim city manager.
"John Curp is a smart, effective, and proven government executive," Pureval said. "He has the leadership skills to bring innovation and collaboration to the city."
Council must approve the selection and his compensation. First, council's Budget and Finance Committee will discuss and vote on the contract at a special 11 a.m. Wednesday meeting.
Boggs Muething is leaving with severance greater than her contract calls for, a severance package worth at least $287,465.
Boggs Muething was hired as city manager in October of 2020 at a salary of $252,485 a year. She got a raise last year, bringing her compensation to $265,130 a year.
Patrick Duhaney, the previous city manager from 2018 to 2020, earned $247,554 a year when he left.
