The Cincinnati Reds’ roster churn in the offseason already started when they took six players off their 40-man roster earlier this month, losing three catchers to waivers.
There will be more roster movement throughout the next month as the Reds look to create space to add at least a handful of prospects who are eligible for December’s Rule 5 Draft.
Here’s a look at where all the pitchers on the Reds’ 40-man stand with a position player breakdown to follow in a second installment:

CINCINNATI REDS PITCHERS
RHP Chase Anderson, 34
Signed from Tampa Bay’s Triple-A bullpen when the Reds were out of starting depth, Anderson posted a 2-4 record and a 6.38 ERA in 24 innings. He didn’t give up many hits, but he walked far too many (5.6 per nine innings).
Contract status: Free agent.
2023 outlook: He wants to return after reuniting with pitching coach Derek Johnson. Would the Reds be interested in anything more than a non-roster deal with an invite to spring training?
RHP Tejay Antone, 28
Antone missed the entire 2022 season after he underwent Tommy John surgery in Aug. 2021. He was throwing bullpen sessions in Arizona by the end of the season.
Contract status: First year eligible for arbitration.
2023 outlook: The history for pitchers who underwent two Tommy John surgeries in their career isn’t good, but the Reds hope he can return as one of their best relievers.
RHP Graham Ashcraft, 24
Rookie year numbers look worse after his three bad outings in return from injured list. Ashcraft had a 5-6 record and a 4.89 ERA in 19 starts.
Contract status: Pre-arbitration.
2023 outlook: Entering next year as the club’s No. 3 starter. He knows he needs to add another pitch to generate more strikeouts.
RHP Luis Cessa, 30
After struggling in the bullpen in the first half of the season, Cessa moved to the rotation out of necessity in August. He had a 4.91 ERA in 36 2/3 innings as a reliever and a 4.30 ERA in 44 innings as a starter.
Contract status: Fourth year eligible for arbitration. He can reach free agency after the 2023 season.
2023 outlook: Cessa will compete for a starting spot in spring training and should have the inside track for one of the backend jobs.
RHP Fernando Cruz, 32
An incredible success story. He made his MLB debut after signing his first pro contract in 2007. He allowed nine hits and two earned runs in 14 2/3 innings (1.23 ERA) with 21 strikeouts and nine walks.
Contract status: Pre-arbitration.
2023 outlook: No situation fazes him, and he should be given the opportunity to earn a spot in the Opening Day bullpen.
Reds payroll entering 2023Reds have under $75 million committed in payroll to 2023 roster as offseason begins
RHP Alexis Díaz, 26
Started the season as the last player to make the Opening Day roster and he finished it as the Reds’ closer. He earned 10 saves and recorded a 1.84 ERA with 83 strikeouts and 33 walks in 63 2/3 innings.
Contract status: Pre-arbitration.
2023 outlook: The favorite to begin in the closer’s role.
RHP Kyle Dowdy, 29
Dowdy made two relief appearances during a week when the Reds played two doubleheaders, tossing 6 1/3 scoreless innings.
Contract status: Pre-arbitration.
2023 outlook: Looking to sign a minor-league deal with an invite to spring training.
RHP Daniel Duarte, 25
Duarte made the Opening Day roster, but he made only three relief appearances before an elbow injury sidelined him for months.
Contract: Pre-arbitration.
2023 outlook: May not stick on the 40-man roster during offseason, but he’s young and should receive a big-league look in spring training somewhere.
RHP Justin Dunn, 27
Missed the first half of the season due to a shoulder injury. Compiled a 1-3 record and a 6.10 ERA in seven starts with 21 strikeouts and 17 walks in 31 innings.
Contract status: First year eligible for arbitration.
2023 outlook: Will compete for a job in the starting rotation during spring training, but has minor-league options to start the season in Triple-A if velocity doesn’t tick up.
RHP Buck Farmer, 31
Designated for assignment at the beginning of the year, but he was a setup man by the end of the season. He had a 3.83 ERA in 44 relief appearances with two saves.
Contract: Third year eligible for arbitration. He can reach free agency after the 2023 season.
2023 outlook: A candidate to be released this offseason due to salary raise in arbitration, but he can handle a lot of roles in a bullpen.
Reds 2023 bullpen outlookBuck Farmer hopes to remain with Reds, but club has decisions to make with bullpen
RHP Ian Gibaut, 28
Claimed off waivers in July and he was solid in a middle relief role. Recorded a 4.67 ERA in 33 relief appearances, but advanced metrics say he pitched better than his ERA showed. Struck out 48 in 34 2/3 innings.
Contract: Pre-arbitration.
2023 outlook: A borderline candidate to remain on the 40-man roster during entire offseason because he’s out of minor league options.
RHP Hunter Greene, 23
Dominant at the end of his rookie season, though overall numbers weren’t great. He had a 5-13 record and a 4.44 ERA in 24 starts with 164 strikeouts and 48 walks in 125 2/3 innings.
Contract: Pre-arbitration.
2023 outlook: One of the top candidates for Opening Day starter.
RHP Vladimir Gutierrez, 27
Badly struggled in the starting rotation, then underwent Tommy John surgery in July.
Contract: Pre-arbitration.
2023 outlook: He will miss at least the first half of the season recovering from surgery. His future may be as a reliever.
RHP Jeff Hoffman, 29
It was the best season of his career before he was sidelined by an elbow injury in July. He had a 3.83 ERA in 35 appearances while handling a lot of mop-up duty.
Contract: Second year eligible for arbitration.
2023 outlook: Health will determine whether he’s on the 40-man roster all offseason. Needs to work his way into high-leverage role.
RHP Joel Kuhnel, 27
Made it back to the big leagues after a shoulder injury. He had a 6.36 ERA in 53 outings, but advanced metrics thought he performed much better than the ERA suggested.
Contract: Pre-arbitration.
2023 outlook: Probably receives another chance to show how he can pitch in the big leagues as he’s further removed from shoulder surgery.
RHP Derek Law, 32
A minor-league signing in August, Law had a 4.08 ERA in 15 appearances.
Contract: First year eligible for arbitration.
2023 outlook: Out of minor league options, so he's a candidate to be released this winter. Should receive a non-roster deal in camp somewhere.
LHP Nick Lodolo, 24
Missed two months with an injury but was the best of the rookie starters with a 4-7 record and a 3.66 ERA in 19 starts. Struck out 131 and walked 39 in 103 1/3 innings.
Contract: Pre-arbitration.
2023 outlook: Should compete with Greene for Opening Day starter.
LHP Mike Minor, 34
Miserable season after the Reds traded for him, racking up a 4-12 record and a 6.06 ERA in 19 starts.
Contract: Club option for $13 million with a $1 million buyout.
2023 outlook: He’s mulling retirement after dealing with shoulder pain all year.
RHP Dauri Moreta, 26
Shuttling between Triple-A and the big leagues, Moreta had a 5.40 ERA in 35 relief appearances.
Contract: Pre-arbitration.
2023 outlook: Needs to improve his consistency to remain in the big-league bullpen, but he should compete for a bullpen spot Opening Day.
RHP Connor Overton, 29
Made a great impression when he was healthy with a 2.73 ERA in six outings (four starts).
Contract: Pre-arbitration.
2023 outlook: He will compete for a spot in the starting rotation, but he still has things to prove in camp with less than 50 career innings under his belt.
LHP Reiver Sanmartin, 26
After an ugly stretch as a starter, he was the top lefty in the bullpen. He had a 2.96 ERA in 41 relief appearances.
Contract: Pre-arbitration.
2023 outlook: He’ll return as the top lefty in the bullpen.
RHP Tony Santillan, 25
Disappointing season that ended with a back injury. He compiled a 5.49 ERA in 21 relief appearances.
Contract: Pre-arbitration.
2023 outlook: He will receive another chance to be a late-inning option in the bullpen if he’s healthy.
RHP Lucas Sims, 28
Limited to 6 2/3 innings (9.45 ERA) in an injury-riddled season. Had surgery in July for a bulging disc in his back.
Contract: Second year eligible for arbitration.
2023 outlook: A prove-it season to show he can remain healthy and have success in the back of the bullpen.
RHP Jared Solomon, 25
Didn’t pitch well in his first year back from Tommy John surgery, owning a 10.80 ERA in nine big-league appearances.
Contract: Pre-arbitration.
2023 outlook: Maybe a borderline candidate to remain on the 40-man roster, but he’ll likely be given a chance to show he can pitch better in his second year following elbow surgery.
RHP Hunter Strickland, 34
Veteran presence was important, but he struggled with a 4.91 ERA in 66 relief appearances while recording seven saves.
Contract: Free agent.
2023 outlook: His durability should give him another big-league opportunity somewhere.
RHP Art Warren, 29
Velocity dipped and slider didn’t perform as well as 2021. He had a 6.50 ERA in 39 appearances.
Contract: Pre-arbitration.
2023 outlook: He’s expected to miss the entire season after he had surgery in September to strengthen an elbow ligament. That may cost him his spot on the 40-man roster.
LHP Justin Wilson, 35
Limited to five appearances before an elbow injury turned into Tommy John surgery.
Contract: Free agent.
2023 outlook: May have to wait until he’s healthy, a couple of months into the season, before he signs somewhere.
