Cleves officials are looking for security solutions after a local park was vandalized.
Tire tracks that appeared over the weekend have made Gulf Community Park's baseball fields unusable. Wednesday evening, village council members discussed at a parks committee meeting how to fix the damage and how to prevent future vandalisms.
The Taylor Creek Youth Organization primarily uses the fields for baseball and softball teams. Some practices have already been canceled due to the vandalism.
Ten tons of baseball dirt to repair the fields will cost roughly $200, Cleves service director John Knuf said.
However, crews will have to work quickly to fill in the tire tracks: It must be done while the dirt is still wet so it can properly homogenize.
That worries Amy Case, whose grandchildren play on the youth teams. She wonders when the job will be done.
"It's definitely an asset to the community," Case said.
Knuf said during the meeting that in the past, it has taken two to three days for the dirt to be delivered. A volunteer from the youth organization has already begun work.
Cleves Village Councilwoman Judith Boyce noted there should be some security solutions because the park gate does not get locked, even past dark when the park is technically closed.
One solution, Knuf noted, would be to have a deputy lock it every night. Additionally, committee members discussed installing security cameras. Action would be taken in future council meetings.
A witness filed a police report after the vandalism but no arrests have been made.
