Phone users will now have to dial 10 digits to make local calls in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.If you have a 513 or 859 area code, you’ll soon have to dial an area code — even for local calls — beginning Sunday, Oct. 24. Right now, if you just dial the seven-digit phone number (without the area code), that call will connect locally.Why is this necessary? The Federal Communications Commission has adopted 988 as the new three-digit number to be used nationwide to reach the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline.In order for 988 to work, mandatory 10-digit local dialing will be implemented, FCC officials said. On and after Oct. 24, local calls dialed with only seven digits may not be completed, and a recording will inform you that your call cannot be completed as dialed. You must hang up and dial again using the area code and the seven digit number.Your telephone number, including current area code, will not change.
