Two Mountain West Conference schools - Boise State and San Diego State - have engaged with the American Athletic Conference about potentially joining the league, according to a report Wednesday by Yahoo Sports' Pete Thamel.
"It’d be naïve to not brace for another round of realignment at both the Power Five and Group of Five level," Thamel added in his article, which examines conference realignment in addition to other changes expected, including the feasibility of an expanded College Football Playoff - which might have included the Cincinnati Bearcats.
It is not known which sports might be included. The Aztecs were 4-4 during the 2020 football season. The Broncos were 5-2.
Boise State just named a new head coach, Andy Avalos, last week. Brady Hoke, a Dayton, Ohio, native whose father, John, played at Miami University, just completed his first season at SDSU.
Multiple reports last year suggested that emails between Boise State and the AAC indicated that the athletic department discussed a potential move to the conference.
