Jesse Winker sits again; Tyler Naquin plays well

PHILADELPHIA – It should have been a routine groundout to begin the fourth inning Friday. Tyler Naquin rolled over on a curveball from Zack Wheeler and busted down the first-base line.

Brad Miller, the Philadelphia Phillies first baseman, was indecisive on whether he wanted to try to toss the ground ball to Wheeler or race to the base himself. It turned into a race to the bag and Naquin won the race for an infield single.

Two batters later, the Cincinnati Reds had a 3-0 lead when Joey Votto homered to center field.

“Late arrival (Thursday) night, sometimes you have a tendency to be a little sluggish,” Votto said. “You do everything you can to get up enough energy and play as hard as you can for the fans, for the fanbase, for the team, for yourself, but at times you need moments like that to energize not only yourself, but the club.

“We needed that.”

Cincinnati Reds center fielder Tyler Naquin (12) is congratulated in the dugout after scoring during the third inning of a baseball game against the Milwaukee Brewers, Friday, July 16, 2021, at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati. The Milwaukee Brewers won, 11-6.

Naquin entered Saturday with six hits in his last 14 at-bats. He already has four multi-hit games in August after recording only five from May 18 to July 31.

“He's playing inspired right now,” Reds manager David Bell said. “He always does, but when you're not seeing results, sometimes it's hard to kind of change the momentum and get things going in the right direction. I think he's done that now.”
