7-year-old girl struck, killed by car in Cincinnati’s Avondale neighborhood


A 7-year-old girl is dead after being struck by a car Tuesday afternoon in Cincinnati, authorities now say.It happened shortly after noon in the 3600 block of Vine Street in the city's Avondale neighborhood. According to police, two young girls – both seven – ran into Vine Street, crossing into the path of an oncoming Toyota Camry.Both girls were struck by the vehicle. "At first I thought it was a car collision. That's how loud it was," a neighbor, who did not want to be identified, explained. "All I seen was this little body in the middle of the street. I didn't know what to do. A lot of people out here didn't know what to do."Neighbors said several witnesses ran to help the children, including at least one who gave CPR to the young girl who appeared unconscious. She was taken to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital where she was later pronounced dead. The second girl was also taken to Children’s Hospital but is expected to survive. "Several other passersby did stop and render aid to the children from what I understand," said Lt. Steve Saunders with the Cincinnati Police Department. "We want to thank the citizens who did that and were very kind and caring to the children who were injured."Authorities say the girls were not in a crosswalk when they were struck. Their names have not been released. The driver of the Toyota, a 17-year-old boy, was uninjured. He stayed at the scene of the crash and is cooperating with police. Any witnesses to the crash are asked to contact the Cincinnati Police Department's Traffic Unit at 513-352-2514.
