LONGMONT, Colo. (KMGH) — A teenage lifeguard in Longmont, Colorado, helped deliver a baby while at work.

“It’s a pretty calm day usually,” 18-year-old lifeguard Natalie Lucas said, talking about her regular Sunday shift.

Calm is was what she was expecting on a Sunday morning late last month. That’s when expectant mother Tessa Rider, who was nine months pregnant, visited the YMCA pool.

“Thought, 'Oh, I’ll go for a swim. It’ll be nice and cool,'” Rider explained.

Rider’s swim didn’t last long.

“It suddenly dawned on me we weren’t making it to the hospital and he was coming out right then and there,” she said.

“The husband tells me they’re having the baby, and I’m like, 'Alright.' And the adrenaline kicks in right then and there," Lucas said.

Lucas requested for someone to call 911, grabbed a medical bag and towels, and was right there Rider pushed.

“She was there to do anything we asked. And the first thing I could think of was could someone hold my back up. And she did, and it was perfect,” Rider explained.

“The baby was already kind of coming out, and it was quick. I would say less than five minutes that it all happened,” Lucas said.

Baby Tobin was born happy and healthy on the pool deck of the YMCA.

“Without her, I would not have been able to safely focus my attention that Tobin came out and that he was safe and healthy,” dad Matthew Jones said.

Right after the birth, someone snapped a photo of the four — dad, mom, baby and lifeguard.

“I stayed calm, I helped them through from beginning to end that Sunday. It was quite the crazy thing to happen, but I’m pretty proud of myself,” Lucas said.

Lucas is off to college in the fall, after an experience she wasn’t expecting, but one that she admits she’ll never forget.

“I do hope to send the little guy birthday cards here and there,” the teen said with a smile.

As for baby Tobin, he gets a lifetime membership to the YMCA.

“He’s definitely going to be a swimmer,” Rider joked.

More than 40 percent of attendees at an overnight summer camp became infected with Covid-19 within days before officials shut it down, according to the CDC.

Local media reports it was a YMCA camp near a lake in Rabun County, Georgia.

More than 260 staff and campers tested positive for the coronavirus, out of a total 597 people who were at the camp sometime between when it opened and when it closed in mid-June. Of the 260 who tested positive, 231 were campers aged 6 to 17 years old.

In their report published Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says camp officials followed most of their recommended safety protocols. They say the two measures not implemented were cloth masks for campers and opening windows and doors for increased ventilation in buildings. Masks were required for staff members.

The camp held orientation for staff members and trainees between June 17 to 21, then were joined by hundreds of kids on June 21 for a week-long camp session.

On June 23, a teen staff member left the camp after developing chills the night before. They tested positive for Covid-19, and the camp began sending kids home on June 24. The entire camp was closed June 27.

The camp was adhering to Georgia’s Executive Order that allowed overnight camps and required negative coronavirus tests less than 11 days before attending.

“These findings demonstrate that SARS-CoV-2 spread efficiently in a youth-centric overnight setting, resulting in high attack rates among persons in all age groups, despite efforts by camp officials to implement most recommended strategies to prevent transmission,” says the CDC report on this outbreak.

From the 136 cases where the CDC was able to gather symptom data, about 26 percent of those who tested positive for coronavirus had no symptoms at the time.

It's that time of year again. This is when parents start looking for summer camps for their kids.

We asked the experts what summer camp will look like this year as we all try to navigate a post-pandemic world.

Summer Camp before COVID seems like a whole different world.

The YMCA says, if your last camp was in 2019, be prepared.

Everything will be further from the moment you sign your child up to the moment you drop them off.

“There will be safety protocols ahead of coming to camp," said YMCA CEO Paul McEntire. "They are often different requirements. Sometimes it is a test before you show up within 48-72 hours. Some do that that varies a good bit."

For McEntire, the camp is his job.

“We operate just over 320 overnight resident camps across the country and 10-thousand-day camps,” McEntire said.

This year, he says, they're moving towards more of an educational focus.

“That is one thing that will be distinctly different at many of our camps in 2021- dealing with the loss of learning that everyone’s going to have to be working on probably for a couple of years to help children catch up,” McEntire said.

Of course, the fun will be there, but it might look a little bit different, and COVID safety protocols might vary by region. In general, though, you can expect masks and minimal group mixing.

“As much as possible, the programs and activities and the things the kids love those are all the same," said McEntire. "A handful of things aren’t safe enough to do in COVID.”

As for safety and guidelines, they rely on the CDC.

Dr. Tanya Altmann, a Los Angeles Area Pediatrician and a spokesperson for the American Academy of Pediatrics, said that if there ever was a year that kids need camp, it's this year.

“This year, summer camp is going to be more important than ever for our kid's social and emotional well-being," Dr. Altmann said. "I’m online every day looking for camp options for my boys because I don’t want them sitting at home on zoom anymore. I want them outdoors, doing things and learning and having fun.”

She also says we've learned a lot. We know how to prevent transmission. We know the outdoors is safer. We know that we need to distance and wear a mask and do the proper sanitizing.

"Code Ninjas," a franchise that teaches kids to code, is primarily indoors.

In San Diego, the owners tell us that their summer classes are already filling up. There are only seven kids per session. A 6-foot distance, temperature checks, and masks will be enforced. For those who are still not comfortable, a virtual option is available.

“There’s going to be a lot of changes, but I think there are so many ways to make camp safe and fun and an amazing experience that these kids need this summer,” said Dr. Altmann.

At the YMCA, enrollment is already ahead of 2019 registration numbers, proving that parents need a break and want their kids to have a good, old-fashion summer.

"We know camp is such an important component for children for their social, emotional health, mental well-being, relationships and for just being a kid that’s always been what camp is about, right?' McEntire said.

The stress of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to weight gain for many Americans.

“During the beginning, I had to start working out outside because the gyms and things like that were closed. So, I made do with what I could,” said Marcus Rogers, a YMCA member.

Each time a weight clanks or someone breathes deep, it’s the sound of someone like Rogers releasing a little bit of stress.

But many of us haven’t been able to release that stress during the pandemic, and that may have caused us to be a little heavier when we step on the scale.

“The more stress people that people were experiencing, the more weight they were gaining,” said Dr. Arthur Evans, the CEO of the American Psychological Association (APA).

The APA has been looking at the impacts of stress and weight gain during the pandemic.

“Americans are gaining weight at a pretty significant level about, about 15 pounds,” said Evans.

About 42% of people surveyed by the APA gained more weight than they intended. In that group, people gained 29 pounds on average.

Fifteen to 30 pounds is no small matter. We asked Cami Woomer, a nutritionist with the YMCA Metro Denver about the relationship between stress and weight gain.

“Stress can be an indicator of weight gain itself. So when people are feeling stressed out, sometimes we go to food, sometimes that means we’re eating more in portions, or we’re eating more throughout the day. Also, stress levels impact our ability to lose weight as well,” said Woomer.

Cortisol is the bodies main stress hormone and several scientific studies have linked cortisol levels to changes in weight. Higher levels of cortisol are also linked to people being less likely to control how much and what they eat.

But not everyone’s stress has risen the same over the course of the last year.

“People who are essential workers had more stress than other people. Parents whose children were doing remote learning were also experiencing more stress. We also found people of color were experiencing more stress and younger people were experiencing more stress,” said Evans.

While that extra stress can lead to weight gain, a healthier lifestyle can help reduce your stress levels.

“Exercise is releasing those endorphins, you’re feeling a little bit better,” said Woomer.

Exercise can also release muscle tension and help regulate cortisol levels.

Certain foods can also have an effect on you.

“Things like caffeine, things that are high in carbohydrates, high in fat, high sodium things can kind of aggravate the stress levels in our body a little bit. And things like whole foods, like whole grains, fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and healthy fats can help reduce inflammation and stress in our body,” said Woomer.

Stress can be the source of some of your weight gain, but losing a little bit and eating a little better could be your road map pushing out some of the stress in your life.
