<p>LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Russia remains barred from international soccer competitions including the Champions League after the Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected appeals by the national soccer federation and four clubs. </p>
<p>CAS upheld decisions by UEFA and FIFA, which excluded Russian national teams and clubs following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. </p>
<p>Russia was already excluded from men's World Cup qualifying and the women's European Championship and its clubs now won't feature in competitions like the Champions League in 2022-23.</p>
<p>FIFA was initially criticized for not punishing the country enough after they invaded Ukraine, the New York Times reported.</p>
<p>Russia wasn't immediately expelled by the governing body of soccer from World Cup qualifying. FIFA initially was going to allow them to play without its flag and anthem before they reversed course amid the backlash.</p>

World soccer governing body FIFA will allow a variety of different armbands that highlight "a range of social causes" to be worn at the upcoming Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, the organization said Friday.Related video above: Equal pay for U.S. men's and women's soccer teams"FIFA, in partnership with several United Nations agencies, will use the FIFA Women's World Cup Australia &amp; New Zealand 2023<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> to highlight a range of social causes, selected following extensive consultation with stakeholders including players and the 32 participating member associations," FIFA said in a statement.Team captains will be allowed to wear an armband around eight different social causes, including gender equality, inclusion and peace, during the tournament, which FIFA says will reach an "estimated audience of over two billion people around the world.""Football unites the world and our global events, such as the FIFA Women's World Cup, have a unique power to bring people together and provide joy, excitement and passion," said FIFA President Gianni Infantino."But football does even more than that – it can shine the spotlight on very important causes in our society. After some very open talks with stakeholders, including member associations and players, we have decided to highlight a series of social causes – from inclusion to gender equality, from peace to ending hunger, from education to tackling domestic violence – during all 64 matches at the FIFA Women's World Cup."FIFA said that team captains will have three options: "They can wear the 'Football Unites the World' armband for the entire tournament; an armband corresponding to the theme of their choice for the entire tournament; or the armband corresponding to the theme of the specific matchday."There will be "eight specific messages" during the tournament that fall under FIFA's global campaign titled "Football Unites the World," which are:Unite for Inclusion – in partnership with UN Human RightsUnite for Indigenous Peoples – in partnership with UN Human RightsUnite for Gender Equality – in partnership with UN WomenUnite for Peace – in partnership with UNHCR, the UN Refugee AgencyUnite for Education for All – in partnership with the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)Unite for Zero Hunger – in partnership with the UN World Food ProgrammeUnite for Ending Violence Against Women – in partnership with UN WomenFootball is Joy, Peace, Love, Hope &amp; Passion – in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO)At the World Cup in Qatar in 2022 the captains of several men's European teams did not wear "OneLove" armbands due to the danger of receiving yellow cards.Several European teams were set to participate in the "OneLove" campaign to promote inclusion and oppose discrimination, but those countries were prevented by FIFA from doing so.In a joint statement at the time, they said they had been told by the governing body that any "breaches of kit regulations" would result in on-field sanctions for the players. The armbands, which featured a heart striped in different colors, became the center of huge controversy at the tournament, despite standing against all forms of discrimination – including solidarity with people of different genders and sexual identities. In the absence of players not wearing the armbands, politicians watching their countries in Qatar – including Belgian Foreign Affairs Minister Hadja Lahbib and German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser – had them on display while sitting close to Infantino. There is no explicit mention of LGBTQ rights in Women's World Cup armbands, beyond the "themes" of "gender equality" and "inclusion."The Women's World Cup is scheduled to be played from July 20 to August 20 with the opening game taking place in Auckland when co-hosts New Zealand play Norway.

<p>
The show is over already for the Qatar team, which was eliminated Friday from the World Cup less than a week after it opened the tournament and launched the first version of soccer's biggest event in the Middle East.Qatar lost 3-1 to Senegal for its second straight defeat at the World Cup and its exit was confirmed a few hours later, when Netherlands and Ecuador drew 1-1 in the other Group A game.Becoming the quickest host nation team to depart the tournament in the 92-year history of the World Cup, Qatar can’t qualify for the last 16 no matter what happens in its last game against Netherlands.South Africa had been the only other home team to fail to make it out the group stage in 2010 — but it at least managed a win and a draw.“If you expected us to go very far in this tournament, then it will be a disappointment,” Qatar coach Félix Sánchez said before his team was officially out. “Our goal was to be competitive.”The writing was on the wall from the very start for Qatar. The team may be the 2019 Asian champion, but looked nervous and was overwhelmed in the 2-0 loss to Ecuador last Sunday straight after a glittering opening ceremony put on by the wealthy Gulf emirate and meant to showcase it to the world.Friday's performance by Qatar was a little, but not much better for a squad that all plays in the local league and is missing the kind of top talent that is present in almost every World Cup team now.Qatar at least scored this time, a second-half header by substitute Mohammed Muntari, a Ghanaian-born striker who is one of many in the squad born outside Qatar but brought in to boost its chances at the World Cup. At 2-1, Qatar threatened a comeback against the African champion for just six minutes before Bamba Dieng responded to hit home Senegal's third goal and reestablish a two-goal cushion.Video below: How Qatari Desert Stadium are keeping cool during the World CupSenegal got its campaign back on track after losing its opener to Netherlands. Coach Aliou Cissé was also pleased that three forwards, Boulaye Dia, Famara Diedhiou and Dieng, got on the scoresheet as Senegal has its own challenge at this World Cup: Filling the chasm left by the pre-tournament injury to Sadio Mané.Cissé had instructed his remaining forwards to step it up before playing the host at Al Thumama Stadium in Doha. They responded.“Yes, we understood the message loud and clear,” Dia said. “Efficiency efficiency, efficiency. You need to get in front of the goal and you need to score.”Qatar had never qualified for the World Cup before FIFA's highly-contentious decision in 2010 to give it the tournament. That gave its team automatic entry. But although the oil- and gas-rich nation spent around $220 billion of its vast riches on building stadiums, roads and even a new city for the World Cup, it couldn't put together a solid defense for the team.Qatar fell behind against Senegal after an amateurish mistake by central defender Boualem Khoukhi, who tried to make a clearance under no pressure, didn’t connect properly and landed on his backside. The ball dribbled away from Khoukhi and Dia lashed it in for his first World Cup goal.Diedhiou made it 2-0 at the start of the second half with a header from a corner while two Qatar defenders failed to stop him.Qatar did get a stroke of bad luck when it was denied a penalty and the chance of the lead before Dia’s goal. Akram Afif, who was born in Doha, was knocked over by a charging Ismaila Sarr but referee Antonio Mateu of Spain didn’t award a penalty even though replays suggested that contact was made.“We have to forget about today, move on and play the Netherlands,” Sánchez said.Video below: How the 2022 World Cup in Qatar is structuredA wave (goodbye?) for QatarAs Qatar rallied for a little while in the second half, the white-robed Qatar supporters did try and get behind their team.Thousands of home fans walked out halfway through Qatar’s first loss to Ecuador, but they stayed against Senegal and even broke out into the wave around the stadium. It turned out to be more of a wave farewell from the World Cup.Without ManéSenegal came closer to adjusting to life in Qatar without Mané, with those three forwards on the scoresheet.“It’s very difficult to replace a player like Sadio Mane but football is a team sport,” Senegal coach Cissé said. Also important for Senegal, goalkeeper Edouard Mendy made two world-class saves to suggest a return to some form after he was blamed for both goals in the 2-0 loss to the Dutch. What's nextQatar bows out against Netherlands on Tuesday. Senegal isn’t out of trouble yet and will face Ecuador on the same day with both playing for a place in the last 16.

<p>Also important for Senegal, goalkeeper Edouard Mendy made two world-class saves to suggest a return to some form after he was blamed for both goals in the 2-0 loss to the Dutch.</p>
<h2 class="body-h2">What's next</h2>
<p>Qatar bows out against Netherlands on Tuesday. Senegal isn’t out of trouble yet and will face Ecuador on the same day with both playing for a place in the last 16.</p>

<p>One of the best opportunities for the U.S. to take the lead came in the first half when Christian Pulisic's shot hit the crossbar. </p>
<p>England had a chance to win the game in the closing minutes of the game. Harry Kane's header went just wide of the goal in the 93rd minute. </p>
<p>This was the first scoreless draw for the U.S. in World Cup history. </p>
<p>"We're proud, but our work's not done," said Gregg Berhalter, head coach of the U.S. men's national team. </p>
<p>The U.S. will now need to win on Tuesday against Iran to move out of Group B and into the elimination round. </p>

Related video above: Hosts Qatar knocked out after Senegal loss, Iran steals last minute win over 10-man WalesMorocco pulled off yet another World Cup shock on Sunday, and Belgium's aging "Golden Generation" took the hit this time. The 2-0 upset left Kevin de Bruyne and the 2018 semifinalists in peril of a group-stage exit at what is likely the final World Cup for a highly-talented Belgian group that hasn't managed to convert their promise into prizes. It might now be too late.De Bruyne didn't drive Belgium forward against Morocco, captain Eden Hazard was taken off after an hour, and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was probably at fault for the opening goal."We haven't seen the best Belgium yet," said Roberto Martinez, a Spaniard who has coached the team for six years. "We haven't been ourselves."Belgium could have become the second team behind defending champion France to advance to the last 16 if it beat Morocco. But it dropped from first to third in Group F and now plays against 2018 World Cup finalist Croatia trying to avoid its earliest elimination since 1998.Morocco captain Romain Saiss gave his team the lead with a barely noticeable deflection off his hip after a free kick from Abdelhamid Sabiri in the 73rd minute that got under the body of Courtois — for many, the best goalkeeper in the world.Zakaria Aboukhlal guided a shot into the roof of the net off a pass from Hakim Ziyech in stoppage time to make it 2-0 as Belgium's defense, boasting more than 300 international appearances but anchored by two players in their mid-30s, was beaten by a speedy 22-year-old forward playing at his first World Cup.Morocco's players kneeled and pressed their heads to the ground in prayer, then leapt up in celebration. Pulling himself up from the ground, Courtois just shook his head. The second big upset at the first World Cup in the Middle East involved another Arabic nation. Saudi Arabia defeated Argentina in the opening set of group games.Morocco, which was roared on by thunderous noise from its fans at Al Thumama Stadium, had started in Qatar with a promising 0-0 draw with Croatia."We are delighted with that after Croatia and Belgium," Morocco coach Walid Regragui said. "That's absolutely outstanding for Morocco."Belgium, ranked No. 2 in the world behind Brazil, had won its last seven group games at the World Cup before the upset, but that included a labored 1-0 win over Canada to open this year's tournament.Even De Bruyne said in a media interview before the World Cup that Belgium's squad was likely too old to win now."I don't think any comments will affect a result or a performance," Martinez said, dismissing the suggestion that De Bruyne's interview might have unsettled Belgium.Morocco had to make a change right before kickoff when goalkeeper Yassine Bounou felt unwell but the North Africans were unaffected and clinched their first win at a World Cup since 1998 and only their third ever. Morocco moved to four points and Croatia is also on four points after beating Canada later Sunday. Belgium has three points and Canada has been eliminated.Morocco has only ever been past the group stage once at a World Cup, in 1986. And things were in turmoil ahead of the tournament after former coach Vahid Halilhodzic was fired and Regragui was brought in at the end of August, less than three months before the World Cup. Regragui had only three friendlies to make his mark on the team before facing Croatia at the World Cup. Ziyech recalledRegragui immediately recalled Ziyech, a Chelsea winger who was exiled from the team under Halilhodzic because of a rift between them. Ziyech curled in a disallowed free kick in the first half, set up the second goal, and was Morocco's best player against Belgium. Belgian desperationMartinez brought on forward Romelu Lukaku, the country's record scorer, as a substitute with less than 10 minutes to go in a desperate attempt to get one back when it was 1-0. Lukaku is only just returning from a left thigh problem and Belgium has missed him dearly. Martinez might be forced to start him against Croatia.Who scored?Sabiri was initially credited with the first goal from his free kick, but FIFA later amended the official match report to give it to Saiss. What's next? The final group games are on Thursday, when Morocco will come back to Al Thumama Stadium to play Canada. Belgium will face Croatia at the same time.

<p>AL KHOR, Qatar (AP) — Soccer powerhouses Belgium and Germany made early exits at the World Cup on Thursday, which many considered a wild day in group play.</p>
<p>Back-to-back early exits at the <a class="Link" href="https://apnews.com/hub/world-cup">World Cup</a> have Germany coach Hansi Flick wanting to go back to basics.</p>
<p>The four-time champions were again eliminated from the group stage four years after their embarrassing display as defending champions in Russia.</p>
<p>Something has to change, Flick said after a 4-2 victory over Costa Rica on Thursday that still wasn’t enough to secure a spot in the round of 16.</p>
<p>“I believe for the future of German football we need to do things differently in training,” said Flick, who took over as coach after last year’s European Championship. “For years we are talking about new goalkeepers and wingbacks, but Germany was always able to defend well. We need the basics.</p>
<p>“For the future, for the next 10 years, it is very important to focus on the new generation of players.”</p>
<p>It was only eight years ago that Germany won its fourth World Cup title, beating an Argentina team led by Lionel Messi in his prime in the final at the Maracana Stadium. With that victory, Germany became the only European team to win a World Cup in either North or South America.</p>
<p>In Qatar, it was an opening loss to Japan that set the stage for the disappointing finish this time. Germany was beaten 2-1 in that match last week, and followed it with a 1-1 draw against Spain.</p>
<p>That gave the Germans a chance in its last match at Al Bayt Stadium, and for a few minutes during the simultaneous final group matches on Thursday, it was enough. At halftime, for example, Germany was beating Costa Rica and Japan was losing to Spain — results that would have put the Germans into the round of 16.</p>
<p>It was <a class="Link" href="https://apnews.com/article/japan-spain-2022-world-cup-results-3ba47d46d012f37ed790fdab8d20814f">Japan’s 2-1 victory over the Spaniards</a> that essentially cost the Germans a chance to play at least one more match in Qatar.</p>
<p>Flick cited Spain as an example for his country to follow.</p>
<p>“Spain is very good in defense,” he said, even though the 2010 World Cup champions ultimately lost to Japan at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha. “It focuses on training young players. They know the tactics well.”</p>
<p>It all started so well for Germany on Thursday with Serge Gnabry scoring a 10th-minute header and Spain taking an early lead against Japan.</p>
<p>Both matches were turned upside down in the second half.</p>
<p>Yeltsin Tejeda evened the score in the 58th minute and Juan Vargas scrambled another in the 70th, putting Costa Rica ahead 2-1 and all of a sudden on target to advance.</p>
<p>“There were a lot of individual mistakes and these are things that make me very angry,” Flick said.</p>
<p>But Germany substitute Kai Havertz made it 2-2 in the 73rd minute and then restored Germany’s lead in the 85th. Another substitute, Niclas Füllkrug, added the fourth.</p>
<p>Costa Rica had lost its opening game against Spain 7-0. The team then put on a much better display and beat Japan 1-0.</p>
<p>“We are not what we saw in our first game,” Costa Rica coach Luis Fernando Suarez said. “We had to go back to what made us qualify for the World Cup.”</p>
<p>Spain will take on Morocco, who took the top spot in Group F after defeating Canada 2-1, ESPN reported.</p>
<p>Belgium, ranked No. 2 in the world and finished third at the World Cup four years ago, was also eliminated from the world's biggest sporting event after a goalless tie against Croatia, who will play Japan in the round of 16, The Washington Post reported.</p>
<p>HISTORY MADE</p>
<p>The match was also notable because <a class="Link" href="https://apnews.com/article/world-cup-womens-soccer-sports-qatar-2e5b1e569c75640883f2908ef585b621">French referee Stéphanie Frappart</a> became the first woman to officiate a men’s World Cup match.</p>
<p>RECORD SET</p>
<p>Manuel Neuer played in his 19th World Cup match to set a record for a goalkeeper — overtaking German great Sepp Maier and Brazil keeper Cláudio Taffarel.</p>
<p>GINTER’S WAIT</p>
<p>Matthias Ginter was participating in his third World Cup, but going into the match against Costa Rica he had yet to play a single minute at any of those tournaments. That all changed when he came on as a substitute in the 89th minute.</p>

The body and possessions of soccer journalist Grant Wahl were repatriated to the United States on Monday after his death last week while covering the World Cup in Qatar, a senior State Department official said. The official said Wahl's remains and his belongings arrived at New York's John F. Kennedy Airport around 8:30 a.m. ET. They were accompanied by a consular official from the U.S. Embassy in Doha who had had custody of Wahl's remains since shortly after he collapsed during Friday's match between Argentina and the Netherlands and later died. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of privacy concerns, had no additional details but said the embassy in Qatar had been working with Wahl's family to ensure the repatriation went smoothly.Wahl, an American journalist who helped grow the popularity of soccer in the United States and reported on some of the biggest stories in the sport, was 49.Tributes to Wahl have poured in since his death and on Monday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken added his voice to the chorus of appreciation."I so appreciated Grant Wahl, whose writing captured not only the essence of the beautiful game but also the world around it," Blinken wrote on Twitter about an hour after the repatriation was complete."I send my deepest condolences to his family, and thank our embassy team and Qatari partners who worked together so effectively to fulfill their wishes," Blinken wrote.Wahl, who had complained of respiratory problems earlier in the week and had been treated for a possible case of bronchitis, fell back in his seat in a section of Lusail Stadium reserved for journalists during extra time of the game, and reporters adjacent to him called for assistance.Emergency services workers responded very quickly, treated him for 20 or 30 minutes on site and then took him out on a stretcher. The World Cup organizing committee said he was taken to Doha's Hamad General Hospital, but it did not state a cause of death.Wahl wrote for Sports Illustrated for more than two decades and then started his own website. He was a major voice informing an American public of soccer during a time of increased interest after the United States hosted the 1994 World Cup.He also brought a critical eye to the international organizing bodies of the sport.

To some, it's little more than a meaningless exhibition match. To others, it's a chance to become “immortal.”The third-place playoff at the World Cup can be a confusing concept.“You are so disappointed, you’ve just lost a semifinal and then two days later you have to go back out there,” Morocco coach Walid Regragui said Friday.Regragui's history-making team — the first African nation to reach the World Cup semifinals — will play Croatia on Saturday at Khalifa International Stadium.“It’s like the booby prize," Regragui said. “I am sorry for speaking like this. I understand that it should be important, I understand that it is better to finish third than fourth, but for, me my takeaway is that we just didn’t get to the final.”Morocco's run to the semifinals in Qatar provided the most improbable story of the tournament. The team was also the first Arab nation to go so far in soccer's biggest event, generating an outpouring of pride among Arab countries. After such a wild and dizzying ride, it's understandable that Regragui sounded so flat when looking ahead to the match against Croatia. It's also a measure of his own ambition that he ends an unforgettable tournament for African soccer with a sense of disappointment after being beaten by defending champion France 2-0.“Yes, finishing third would be great for our image. We would be on the podium," the coach said. “But you know what, even if we win the game tomorrow we won’t have got to the final and we won’t have won the World Cup.”The atmosphere from the Croatian side has been more upbeat. The runners-up from the last World Cup in Russia lost to Argentina 3-0 in the other semifinal match, but their players have spoken of the importance of winning another medal.Forward Andrej Kramarić described it as the chance to “become an immortal hero in your country."“Eight of us from (the tournament in) Russia understand that feeling of winning a medal at the World Cup and we have a lot of players who haven’t experienced that and would love to do that because it’s something that will stay with you for the rest of their life,” Kramarić said.Luka Modric, who is likely playing in his last World Cup, had similar thoughts.“We need to leave everything to win the bronze medal and let our fans celebrate one more time,” he said.To finish second and third in back-to-back World Cups would further secure the legacy of a golden generation for Croatia.“Saturday’s match is not a small one for us, but a big final, a fight for third place, for a medal," Croatia coach Zlatko Dalić said. "We have to prepare in every sense. It’s a big thing if we take the bronze medal, that would be great."The difference is being third or fourth in the world, we will do everything to do that.”Morocco and Croatia have already played each other at this year's World Cup, a 0-0 draw in the group stage.“We know that Croatia got a lot of stick because they weren’t able to beat Morocco,” Regragui said. “Morocco was one of the underdogs and now we both reached the semifinals.”Injured Morocco center back Romain Saiss, the team's captain, will miss the game after lasting only 21 minutes against France. Noussair Mazraoui, also substituted in that match, is a doubt.“We have really, really pushed our players to the limits, but they still want to go out tomorrow and play again," Regragui said. "But we are not going to be taking risks tomorrow for some of our players.”

Argentina and France are tied 3-3 in the World Cup final at Lusail Stadium in Qatar. Lionel Messi scored the first goal for Argentina on a 23rd-minute penalty kick after a foul on Di Maria. Thirteen minutes later, Di Maria scored Argentina's second goal.Messi now has 12 World Cup goals — the same as Brazil great Pelé — and is the first player to score in the group stage and every round of the knockout stage in a single edition of the tournament. In the second half, Kylian Mbappé scored two goals for France, tying the score 2-2. Just one minute after scoring on a penalty kick, the France forward scored again, on a volley. An extra 30 minutes was added to the World Cup match after the score was tied 2-2.Messi scored his second goal of the match for Argentina in the second period of extra time to put Argentina ahead 3-2.Mbappé scored for France on a penalty kick with just a few minutes remaining of extra time, tying the match 3-3.Both teams are trying to win the biggest tournament in soccer for the third time. France won in 1998 and in 2018. Brazil in 1962 was the last team to win back-to-back World Cup titles. Argentina won the title in 1978 and 1986. The Argentines also lost in the final in 2014. Messi, one of soccer's greatest players of all time, is thought to be playing in his final World Cup and could win the ultimate prize for the first time if Argentina wins. But having experienced defeat in the final of 2014 in Brazil, when Argentina lost 1-0 to Germany through extra time, Messi knows all too well the pain of having his World Cup dreams shattered. <p>Argentina's Lionel Messi is sitting on top of the world as his national team won the World Cup in Qatar on Sunday.</p>
<p>But images of him draped in a traditional Arab robe over his blue-and-white team jersey after the match garnered mixed reactions.</p>
<p>Following Argentina's win over France in a 4-2 penalty shootout, Qatar’s emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, draped a bisht, a ceremonial Arab robe, over Messi’s shoulders during the trophy presentation, CNN, Sports Illustrated and The Guardian reported.</p>
<p>According to the media outlets, the cloak is traditionally worn on special occasions and events.</p>
<p>Messi is seen wearing it as he celebrated the team's third World Cup title and hoisted the trophy into the air, then shortly thereafter, he removed it, the news outlets reported.</p>
<p>For some, they praised the gesture, while others weren't too keen on the idea.</p>
<p>“Seems a shame in a way that they’ve covered up Messi in his Argentina shirt,” said BBC host Gary Lineker during the network's live coverage of the final, CNN reported.</p>
<p>According to CNN and The Guardian, the moment renewed complaints of Qatar trying to attempt "sportswashing," a term to describe a country attempting to use sports to improve its reputation.</p>
<p>“Something a little strange about Messi being dressed in Bisht, that black cloak that the emir of Qatar dressed him in before lifting the World Cup,” New York Times journalist Tariq Panja said in a tweet, CNN reported.</p>
<p>Messi later removed the bisht and was later seen celebrating in a team shirt, the outlets reported.</p>

<p>CINCINNATI — Christian Pulisic scored on a glancing header with his first touch of the game in the 74th minute, Weston McKennie added a goal in the 85th and the United States beat Mexico 2-0 on Friday night in a World Cup qualifier.</p>
<p>After falling to the Mexicans 2-1 in November 2016 at Columbus, Ohio, the U.S. reverted to the traditional “Dos a Cero” scoreline that marked the four previous home qualifying matchups from 2001-13 — all in Columbus.</p>
<p>Still regaining fitness after spraining his left ankle on Sept. 8 at Honduras, the 23-year-old Pulisic entered in place of Brenden Aaronson in the 69th minute and lifted the U.S. into a first-place tie with Mexico as the 14-game final round of qualifying reached the halfway point.</p>
<p>Yunus Musah, an 18-year-old emerging as a key American midfielder, passed to 21-year-old Tim Weah on the right flank. Weah, the son of Liberia president and former FIFA Player of the Year George Weah, crossed and Pulisic got in front of Johan Vásquez and headed the ball past goalkeeper David Ochoa for his 17th international goal.</p>
<p>Pulisic, making his third substitute appearance following the injury — the first two were for Chelsea — ran to the endline and pointed at the American badge on his jersey and jubilant red-white-and-blue clad U.S. supporters errupted at TQL Stadium.</p>
<p>McKennie, dropped from the roster for two matches in September for violating team COVID-19 protocols, scored after exchanging passes with Jesús Ferreira, McKennie’s eighth international goal.</p>
<p>However, McKennie is suspended for Tuesday’s qualifier at Jamaica after getting his second yellow card of the competition, assessed in the 68th minute for arguing with the officials after they failed to call Mexico for fouling Aaronson.</p>
<p>Defender Miles Robinson also is suspended after getting two yellow cards, the second causing the U.S. to play a man short after the 89th minute.</p>
<p>The U.S. moved into first place in the North and Central American and Caribbean region with 14 points, ahead of Mexico on goal difference. Canada has 13 points, Panama 11, Costa Rica, Jamaica and El Salvador six each and Honduras three.</p>
<p>Three nations from the eight-team group qualify for next year’s tournament in Qatar and the fourth-place team advances to a playoff.</p>
<p>The win was the third this year for the Americans over Mexico, following a 3-2 victory in the Nations League final in June — also on a Pulisic goal — and a 1-0 victory in the CONCACAF Gold final in August.</p>
<p>Rain fell as the game began in a 42-degree chill, the coldest for a U.S. qualifier since the Snow Classico of March 2013, a 1-0 win over Costa Rica played in 29-degree temperatures at Commerce City, Colorado.</p>
<p>Ochoa was booed with each touch, apparently because U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter said Thursday that quotes said to be from Ochoa showed the Americans still had to gain Mexico’s respect.</p>

HELPED OUT. LET'S TALK ABOUT THE WEATHER. A GLOOMY NIGHT OUT THERE. KEVIN:OU Y REMEMBER HOW NICE IT WAS LAST WEEKEND? ITAS W UC'S HOMECOMING ANDHE T WEATHER WAS PERFECT, RIG?HT SO, ENVISION THIS. TOTALLY OPPOSITE FOR THIS WEEKEND THAT IS THE WAY IT IS GOING TO PLAY OUT FOR US. IT IS GOING TO BE COLDER. WE'RE GOING THE SEE A LOT LESS IN THE WAY OF SUNSHINE IF AT ALL, I THINK IT IS GOING TO BE AT A PREMIUM, VYER LITTLE SUN THIS WEEKEND. YES, WE WILL CONTEND WITH SHOWERS AND BRISK WINDS TO ADD A LILETT INSULT TO JURY WITH THE CHILL -- TO INJURY WH ITTHE CHILL HEADING INTO THIS WEEKEND. THE COLD FRONT SHIFTING ITS WAY THROUGH THE APPALACHIANS, BUT NOW OUR FOCUS SHIFTS TO COLD FRTON NUMBER TWO. IT IS BEHIND THIS FRONT WHERE THE COLD AIR REALLY RESESID TONIGHT. YOU CAN SEE SNOW IS FLYING THROUGH THE DAKOTAS, MINNESOTA AND THEY HAVE BLIZZARD WARNINGS IN PARTS OF SOUTH DAKOTA. THAT IS WHERE OUR AIR WLIL BE COMING FROM OVER THE WEEKEND, SO THAT HELPS TO PUT IT INTO PERSPECTIVE WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN WITH OUR TEMPERATURES HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND. IT'S GOING TO BE VERY CHILLY OUT THERE. WE'LL MAKITE TO 54 TOMORROW WITH EARLY SUNSHINE. TEMPERATURES WILL TANK IN THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING. 40 THAT CLDOU BE GENEROUS ON SATURDAY. MOSTF O SATURDAY, IT IS POSSIBLE ALLF O SATURDAY COULD BE SPENT IN THE 30'S. WE G AET LITTLE BUMP ON SUNDAY, TBU IT IS EQUALLY AS COLD ON MONDAY TO START EARLY NEXT WEEK. WE HAVE CHILLY AIR COMING OUR WAY AND THAT MEANS YOU NEED TO DRESS WARM TOMORROW NHTIG IF YOU'RE HEADING TO THE WORLD CUP QUALIFIER BETWEEN MEXICO AND THE U.S.A. THERE COULD BE SPOTTY SHOWERS AROUND. I DON'T THINK RAIN IS A BIG ISSUE. IT WILL BE DAMP AND CHILLY THOUGH, SO YOU WILL CERTAINLY WANT TO DRESS WARM. I EXPTEC A BRISK BREEZE AND WIND CHILLS WILL FEEL LIKE THEY ARE DOWN THERE IN THE MIDDLE TO UPPER 30'S,O S NOT THE MOST PLEASANT OF CONDITIONS FOR SOCCER WEATHER EITHER, UNFORTUNATELY. TOO BAD IT IS NOT LAST WEEKEND, RIGHT? HERE IS A LOOK AT FUTURECAST. SKIES WILL BE MOSTLY CLEAR THROUGH THE NIGHT. YOU WLIL WAKE UP TO SUNSHINE TOMORROW.
