Here's what to expect on Day 14 of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games:HalfpipeEven when Eileen Gu's simply taking a celebratory stroll through the halfpipe, she's still so stylish and makes it look so effortless. The 18-year-old American-born freestyle skier who represents China captured Olympic gold in the women's halfpipe on a breezy and cold Friday morning to become the first action-sports athlete to pick up three medals at the same Winter Games. With hands on her hips, Gu visualized her first two runs at the top of the Secret Garden halfpipe course. Then, she flawlessly executed her plan. She warmed up with a 93.25 on her first pass before going even higher and bigger to post a 95.25 on her second. But this was the sort of run Gu visualized all along — a nice relaxed jaunt as the last competitor and with the contest sealed. She had fun with her victory run, too, going big off the walls one last time and bending back her skis — a high-flying, picture-perfect moment to culminate another successful day at her office."I feel at peace. I feel grateful. I feel proud," Gu said.Figure skatingThe fallout from Kamila Valieva's nightmarish free skate will likely reverberate through the figure skating world for a while, but there's one more competition left at the Beijing Games — the pairs short program Americans Ashley Cain-Gribble and Timothy LeDuc along with Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier are competing.CurlingThe U.S. men had their Olympic title defense end with a semifinal loss to Britain. They still have a chance to win the bronze medal when they face Canada. SpeedskatingThe men's 1,000-meter speedskating event kicks off early Friday morning.

<p>
Here's what to expect on Day 13 of the Beijing Olympic Games:HockeyAmerican assistant captain Hilary Knight calls it “a beautiful rivalry.” Canadian captain Marie-Philip Poulin sums it up as “very fun.”Don’t be fooled by the pleasantries. One of international sports’ fiercest and longest-running grudge matches will play out for the second time at the Beijing Olympics, with the next meeting between the United States and Canada determining who goes home with gold."These are the the games that we live for," U.S. captain Kendall Coyne Schofield said following a 4-1 semifinal win over Finland. "Everyone’s been so resilient through the pandemic with the ups and downs, the cancellations, postponements and finding ways to train, and it’s for this moment. We’re going to empty the tanks, and this is what we came here to do.”The U.S. is the defending Olympic champion after rallying to beat Canada 3-2 in a shootout at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games. The Canadians are considered the favorites this time after steamrolling to a 6-0 record and outscoring opponents 54-8, including a 4-2 win over the U.S. in group play.Canada also had the edge over its cross-border rivals since Poulin scored the gold-medal-winning goal in a 3-2 overtime win over the U.S. at the world championships in August to end the Americans’ streak of five tournament titles. Canada is 5-1-1 in the past seven meetings against the U.S. since.Overall at the Olympics, which added women’s hockey in 1998, Canada is 6-3 against the U.S., with four gold medals to the Americans’ two.Figure skatingThe women's figure skating event ends early Thursday — the competition portion, at least. It remains to be seen how much longer it will be adjudicated.Kamila Valieva is in first place after the short program. That part isn't a surprise — but the 15-year-old Russian's path to this point has been anything but smooth. And there's no indication that will change anytime soon.Valieva's positive drug test from an event in December put her participation in doubt, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that she could compete while officials conduct a full investigation. If Valieva finishes in the top three, the International Olympic Committee has said there will be no medals ceremony. The Russians have a chance to sweep the top three spots, with Anna Shcherbakova second and Alexandra Trusova fourth after the short program.Valieva's free skate is to Maurice Ravel's “Bolero” — a popular skating tune that ice dancers Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean famously performed to at the Sarajevo Games in 1984.Alpine skiingMikaela Shiffrin geared up for the Olympic Alpine combined by setting the fastest time in a downhill training session on Wednesday. The two-time Olympic champion so far has failed to win a medal at the Beijing Games, skiing out in the giant slalom and the slalom — the two events she has gold medals in — and finishing ninth in the super-G and 18th in Tuesday’s downhill.Next up is the combined race, which adds the times from one downhill run and one slalom run.Shiffrin is the world champion in combined and also won silver in the event at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games. The 26-year-old Shiffrin is far less experienced in the downhill but finished Wednesday’s training session 0.93 seconds ahead of Wendy Holdener of Switzerland. CurlingAmerican John Shuster and the defending Olympic curling champions won a last-chance match to qualify for the playoffs at the Beijing Olympics. They beat Denmark 7-5 to keep their hopes of a repeat gold medal alive. The Americans will play Britain in the semifinals later Thursday night. Reigning silver medalist Sweden will meet Canada, which finished fourth a year ago.Four years after winning five straight elimination games to take gold -- just the second Olympic curling medal in U.S. history -- Shuster’s foursome was again in a desperate position. This time there was a twist, though: Even with a loss, they could have made the playoffs if Italy beat Norway. (The Americans beat Norway 7-6 in the round-robin to claim the tiebreaker.)In the end, Italy lost. The Americans needed to win, and they did.SpeedskatingBrittany Bowe already made a big contribution to the U.S. medal haul when she gave up her spot in the 500 meters so teammate Erin Jackson could compete. Jackson then won the event.Bowe, a fine skater in her own right, finished 10th in the 1,500 and 16th in the 500. She is the world record holder in the 1,000, which she'll compete in early Thursday morning. Also of noteEileen Gu of China, one of the stars of these Olympics, competes in qualifying for the freestyle halfpipe. The men's aerials final is also set for Wednesday night.

Here's what happened during Day 12 at the Beijing Olympic Games: HockeyThe United States is out of the men's hockey tournament at the Olympics in stunning fashion after blowing a late lead.Marek Hrivik scored with 43.7 seconds left in regulation, Peter Cehlarik had the winner and Slovakia beat the U.S. 3-2 in a shootout Wednesday to knock the top-seeded Americans out in the quarterfinals. The U.S. led for almost half the game before the tying goal when Slovakia pulled its goaltender for an extra attacker to play 6-on-5.The U.S. had gotten accustomed to playing tight games in the tournament, beating Canada by two goals and Germany by one. But blown coverage in front allowed Hrivik to knock a loose puck past goalie Strauss Mann, who was impressive until that point.Coming up empty on four power plays, including three in the third period, came back to bite the Americans. Matty Beniers hit the post on one of the best scoring chances the U.S. had in the third, but the team could not crack Patrik Rybar, who was playing a second consecutive day in net for Slovakia.Freestyle SkiingFreestyler skier Alex Hall led a 1-2 American finish in the men’s Olympic slopestyle competition on Wednesday with a trick on his first run where he stopped his rotation midair and turned in the other direction before softly landing.Hall’s opening run drew a score of 90.01, which no one could match in three runs. His teammate Nick Goepper turned in a creative run on his second pass to earn silver. Jesper Tjader of Sweden took home bronze. The American men have captured six of nine Olympic medals since the event made its debut in 2014. Goepper has three of them, adding Wednesday to his silver from the 2018 Pyeongchang Games and bronze from the 2014 Sochi Olympics.“So proud of the boys and so proud of how they skied,” said Skogen Sprang, the head coach of the U.S. freeski slopestyle pro team. “They've put in a ton of work and they stayed true to the way they want to ski and that’s what we’re all about in this sport. ... Landing it when it counts is huge."

<p>The American men have captured six of nine Olympic medals since the event made its debut in 2014. Goepper has three of them, adding Wednesday to his silver from the 2018 Pyeongchang Games and bronze from the 2014 Sochi Olympics.</p>
<p>“So proud of the boys and so proud of how they skied,” said Skogen Sprang, the head coach of the U.S. freeski slopestyle pro team. “They've put in a ton of work and they stayed true to the way they want to ski and that’s what we’re all about in this sport. ... Landing it when it counts is huge."</p>

Mixed team snowboard cross is a variation on that chaotic event that is making its Olympic debut this year. Each team consists of one man and one woman. The men go first, then the women start in a staggered fashion, based on how the men finished in their race. Meanwhile, the U.S. men's hockey team faces Canada. Here are some things to watch:SnowboardingLindsey Jacobellis has won her second gold medal of the Olympics, teaming with 40-year-old Nick Baumgartner for the title in the new event of mixed snowboardcross. The 36-year-old Jacobellis took gold earlier this week in the women’s event; it came 16 years after a late showboat move as she was cruising in for an apparent win cost her the title at the Turin Games. After a slow start, the U.S. now has five gold medals and 11 overall at the Games. Jacobellis accounts for two, while snowboarder Chloe Kim has another. The Italian team of Omar Visintin and Michela Moioli came in second and the Canadian duo of Eliot Grondin and Meryeta O’Dine finished third.HockeyBrendan Brisson scored his second goal of the tournament and Strauss Mann made 35 saves to help the United States beat Canada 4-2 in men's hockey at the Olympics. The young Americans went hit for hit with the bigger, stronger and more experienced Canadians. The victory puts the U.S. in the driver's seat to win the group and earn a spot in the quarterfinals.Beating Germany on Sunday would accomplish that and could make the U.S. the top seed in the knockout round. Canada goaltender Eddie Pasquale allowed two bad goals in the loss.Ice Dance The Americans have a chance to earn two ice dance medals in the same Games for the first time. Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue finished fourth at Pyeongchang and second at last year's world championships. Madison Chock and Evan Bates were fourth at worlds.Four-time world champions Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron of France are heavy favorites. They finished second in Pyeongchang to Canadian duo Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, who have since retired.

Here's what happened on Day 7 of the Games:Last hurrahJapan's Ayumu Hirano has won gold with a boundary-pushing run in the men's halfpipe at the Beijing Olympics. Three-time gold medalist Shaun White was fourth in what he has said would be his final competition. There was no doubt over the winner after Hirano’s electric performance as the last rider to go. His run included an intricate and unprecedented series of flips and spins that pushed a sport obsessed with progression to new heights. His score of 96 reflected that and the two-time Olympic silver medalist moved past Scotty James of Australia. Jan Scherrer of Switzerland took bronze.White fell on the final run of a career that’s seen the American star win three Olympic titles. He lifted up his goggles and waved to the crowd on his way down the halfpipe. He teared up as the sparse crowd bid adieu and his fellow riders lined up to hug him.“I wanted it,” White said. “My legs were giving out on me every hit.”The stage was being set for some controversy after the second run. James took over the lead with his second attempt. Hirano followed with an impressive run that included the difficult-to-do triple cork, but wasn’t rewarded by the judges. The crowd booed and social media was buzzing.Alpine skiingMikaela Shiffrin completed the super-G at the Beijing Olympics on Friday in a time way out of medal contention — but for the first time in three races at the 2022 Games, she made it to the finish. The two-time Olympic Alpine gold medalist crossed the line at the bottom of a course known as The Rock with a time of 1 minute, 14.30 seconds. That left her 0.79 seconds behind champion Lara Gut-Behrami of Switzerland and in ninth place overall after all 44 entrants had taken their turns down the slope. The 26-year-old American never had entered a super-G at an Olympics before, although she did win a gold in the event at the 2019 world championship and a bronze at last year's worlds."I didn't think there was a very big chance to come in and win, or even medal, in this race," Shiffrin said. "It's a really big relief to be here now in the finish. ... I wasn't skiing safe or anything. But I also did get to the finish and that's really nice for my heart to know."The next women's Alpine event is the downhill on Tuesday. While Shiffrin planned to enter all five individual races in Beijing, it's not known for sure whether that actually will end up happening.Single eliminationThe U.S. women's hockey team faces the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals.

Nathan Chen has been building toward this for years. He's one good free skate away from Olympic gold. After setting a world record with his short program, Chen goes for an Olympic title Wednesday. It could be a big day for the United States, with Chloe Kim also expected to contend for a snowboarding gold medal. Here are some things to watch (all times Eastern):Figure skatingNot only did Chen perform superbly in the short program, his rival, Japan's Yuzuru Hanyu, was eighth. That made Chen's path to gold even clearer. Chen, a three-time world champion, finished fifth at the 2018 Olympics but now appears poised to take Hanyu's crown. "You can never really count out any of these athletes. The competition’s not one program," Chen said. "Whatever happens in the short program is not indicative of what will happen in the free program."SnowboardingAmerican Chloe Kim has won gold in the women's halfpipe at the Beijing Olympics. She turned in a strong opening run as she easily defended her Olympic halfpipe title. The last rider to drop into the halfpipe, and the contest already over, the 21-year-old American still attempted to go big one last time. She fell, quickly got back up and casually glided the rest of the way down the halfpipe Thursday as the Olympic champion. She greeted her fellow medalists at the bottom with an embrace. The only real drama was for second place, with 32-year-old Queralt Castellet of Spain taking silver at her fifth appearance at the Olympic Games. Sena Tomita of Japan held off Cai Xuetong of China for bronze. No one was matching Kim’s height or demanding array of tricks. Not after an opening performance that featured a variety of different spins and rotations, including a front and backside 1080 (three spins each). That flawless run even appeared to surprised her as she covered her mouth in excitement. She later told her coach it was the best one she’s done.Short track dramaMaybe it was inevitable, but there's already been some contentiousness over the short track speedskating results. South Korea filed complaints with the International Skating Union and the International Olympic Committee after two of its skaters were disqualified in the semifinals of the men's 1,000 meters. South Korea’s chef de mission, Yoon Hong Geun, said fans in South Korea are so upset that they are urging the team to return home immediately.

<p>BEIJING — Mexico’s one and only figure skater in the Winter Olympics is making history.</p>
<p>22-year-old Donovan Carrillo is Mexico’s male first figure skater since 1992 and only the fourth ever in the country’s Olympic history.</p>
<p>Carrillo is also the first-ever Mexican figure skater to advance to the free skate final.</p>
<p>He performed to a medley of “Black Magic Woman” and “Shake It”, by Santana on Monday.</p>
<p>The figure skater completed a short program with a personal best score of 79.69.</p>
<p>Carrillo told <a class="Link" href="https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/sports/figureskating-carrillo-achieves-dream-come-true-with-mexican-first-2022-02-08/">Reuters</a> that this accomplishment is “like a dream come true.”</p>
<p>His journey to the Olympic games hasn’t been easy.</p>
<p>For one, there are no Olympic-sized rinks in Mexico and his local rink in Guadalajara closed when he was 13.</p>
<p>So, he and his coach moved three hours away to León, Guanajuato, where he could train at a miniature rink at a mall.</p>
<p>That means he’s had to maneuver and skate around amateurs and children.</p>
<p>Carrillo also wasn’t allowed to play his own music because he was in a public space.</p>
<p>The Olympian has also struggled financially.</p>
<p>He and his family have crowdfunded about $2,400 so he could continue training.</p>
<p>Eventually, the Mexican government began funding him as an elite athlete.</p>
<p>Carrillo will compete again Wednesday to perform his longer free skate.</p>
<p>He said his goal is to improve and look ahead to the future.</p>
<p>“I think this Olympics – thinking more in the future – are going to be key to prepare myself for the next Olympic cycle, with the main focus on Milan 2026,” he said.</p>

<p>BEIJING (AP) — U.S. men’s figure skater Vincent Zhou has tested positive for the coronavirus and is out of the individual competition. </p>
<p>In a five-minute video posted to Instagram on Monday night, a teary Zhou announced that he would have to withdraw. </p>
<p>He had initially tested positive as part of a routine COVID-19 screening and underwent additional testing. </p>
<p>The 21-year-old had struggled through a poor free skate for the eventual team silver medalists a day before and was due to compete in the individual competition that begins with the men’s short program on Tuesday.</p>
<p>Zhou's news comes on the same day the U.S. figure skating <a class="Link" href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/olympics/beijing/2022/02/07/us-figure-skating-wins-team-silver-medal-madison-chock-evan-bates-russia-gold/6683723001/">won silver</a> in the team competition.</p>
<p>Zhou said in the video that he dealt with "crushing loneliness" over the past few months to avoid getting the virus, the <a class="Link" href="https://apnews.com/article/winter-olympics-live-updates-9b312765925144fbe064f0ecbc83af94?utm_source=Twitter&amp;utm_medium=AP_Sports&amp;utm_campaign=SocialFlow">Associated Press</a> reported.</p>
<p>The news outlet reported he ended the video on a positive note saying, “This is not the end. This is a setup for a bigger comeback."</p>

Team USA earned its first medal of the 2022 Winter Olympics in snowboarding but it didn't come from reigning two-time Olympic slopestyle champion Jamie Anderson.Instead, fellow American Julia Marino won the silver, bested in the final moments of the competition by Zoi Sadowski Synnott of New Zealand for gold with her best score of 92.88 points.South Lake Tahoe's Anderson, the favorite to win the event, failed to make the podium and came in 9th place. The slopestyle snowboard final was a windy Saturday for the 12 women qualifiers, which also included Southern California's Hailey Langland who finished 11th. The competition is scored by a panel of judges that grade performances based on execution, difficulty, amplitude, variety and progression of the run. The slopes are full of several different features snowboarders can use depending on their creativity. The format of the final is that the best score of three rounds is the final score.Tess Coady from Australia won a bronze medal with a score of 84.15 points. How Anderson fell shortAnderson fell in her first round. By the second round she was in 8th place with a score of 60.78 points, her best of the three rounds, before falling again in her third round. At Anderson's Olympic debut at the 2014 Sochi Games, she became the first-ever women’s Olympic slopestyle gold medalist. In PyeongChang, she won gold in slopestyle and silver in big air.She grew up in South Lake Tahoe and said when she got on a snowboard for the first time, "I, like, fell in love with the winter season."She’s now based in Whistler, a town in British Columbia.Ahead of taking off for the Olympics, she announced her engagement on social media to Canadian snowboarder Tyler Nicholson.“What I love about our partnership is that we are willing to work through the challenging and darker times to rise above to the lighter vibrations and in doing so, we are a stronger team!” she wrote.

They say age is just a number and that's certainly true when it comes to the Winter Olympics.Close to 3,000 athletes, young and old, have descended on China this year. Here's a look at some of the youngest and oldest registered competitors taking part at Beijing 2022.All information was confirmed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and was correct at time of publishing.Anezka Indrackova — July 30, 2006At just 15 years and six months, Anezka Indrackova will be the youngest athlete competing in Beijing.Unsurprisingly, the Czech ski jumper doesn't have a lot of experience of elite competition, with this being her first year competing on the international senior level. However, she may hold a small advantage over her rivals having already competed on the Olympic jumping hill during a test event in 2021."It means for me that I will fulfill my life dream so soon. It never occurred to me that I would succeed at the age of 15," she said."I'm really grateful for this opportunity and I'm really looking forward to it. After all, it's an Olympics."Indrackova is not the only 15-year-old female competing this year, though.Figure skater Kamila Valieva is just over two months older than Indrackova and the Team ROC athlete is one of the favorites for a podium finish after taking the sport by storm in her first year on the senior circuit.Capable of moves such as the triple axel and the quadruple toe and Salchow jump, Valieva is one of the most exciting young talents in the world of figure skating and broke the world record total score. Gustav Legnavsky — Sept. 23, 2005New Zealand's Gustav Legnavsky will be the youngest male athlete competing this month at just 16 years old.The freestyle skier will be competing in the halfpipe discipline and is excited to compete on the global stage."Halfpipe fits my personality: high octane, precision, expression, opportunity for progress, competitive," said freestyle skier Legnavsky, who will be competing in the halfpipe discipline, ahead of Beijing 2022.His father, Pete Legnavsky, was also a skier and competed at the 1993 World Championships while his mother was also an extreme skier.Gustav has been in skis for as long as he can remember and has been honing his skills ahead of the Games in Switzerland where his dad is coaching him.Despite his young age, Legnavsky has already competed at the 2021 World Championships and broke into the World Cup top-10 earlier this year.A podium finish will be the aim but, regardless, the future looks bright for the 16-year-old. Claudia Pechstein — Feb. 22, 1972German speed skater Claudia Pechstein is the oldest competitor — male or female — in Beijing this month. And after competing in the women's 3000m gold medal race on Saturday, the 49-year-old Pechstein now shares the record for most Winter Olympic appearances with legendary Japanese skier Noriaki Kasai having already competed in seven previous Games.Pechstein's first Winter Ganmes came in Albertville, France in 1992.The 49-year-old, who was a flagbearer for Team Gerrmany at Friday's Opening Ceremony, has a wealth of experience on her side and has won nine Olympic medals during her lengthy and controversial career, including five gold medals.Pechstein was given a two-year doping ban after she returned irregular tests in 2009 but has consistently denied taking performance enhancing drugs — the Court of Arbitration for Sport confirmed her suspension. She may not be at her peak anymore, but an eighth Winter Games is something to note and no other woman has managed the feat.Pechstein finished last in Saturday's gold medal race, but she celebrated with a double fist pump and smile."I was not too fast, but I smiled because today I got my goal to race in my eighth Olympic Games. This was important for me," said Pechstein."Yesterday I carried the flag. It was an amazing moment, a top moment in my career.""The result of today was not so important, it was just to race and to be here. I am super proud."Torger Nergaard — Dec. 12, 1974Norwegian curler Torger Nergaard is the oldest male athlete competing at Beijing 2022. It will be the 47-year-old's sixth Winter Olympics, his first coming at Salt Lake City in 2002 where he won a gold medal. He's yet to repeat the success from his debut Games but has never been too far away — he picked up a silver medal at Vancouver in 2010.Nergaard has been targeting this Winter Olympics for a while and says it could be his last."It might be the end, I don't know," he said. "It's been a goal for a year now to make the Olympics."When you do something, I think you should try to do it 100%." Oldest and youngest in historyCecilia ColledgeThe youngest competitor in Winter Olympics history is still British figure skater Cecilia Colledge, who competed in the 1932 Games at Lake Placid at the tender age of 11 years and 73 days.According to Olympics.com, Colledge's family had huge aspirations for their daughter and she was taken out of school to train in Norway before returning to London to work with a full-time coach. She finished eighth on her Olympic debut but earned silver four years later at the 1936 Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. Her life then took an unexpected twist as she worked as an ambulance driver during World War II but returned to the sport to win her sixth British title in 1946.She remains Great Britain's youngest ever Olympian and is still the youngest Winter Olympian to date. Carl August KronlundThe oldest ever competitor at the Winter Olympics is still Swedish curler Carl August Kronlund. Not a great deal is known about the man who created history by competing at the 1924 Games at the grand old age of 58 years, 155 days.He also became the oldest Winter Olympian to win a medal after his team won silver in the men's curling final.

<p>The Opening Ceremony of the 2022 Winter Olympics is just around the corner.</p>
<p>The world's greatest athletes are ready to capture gold as the Winter Games kick off Friday in Beijing at 6:30 a.m. ET.</p>
<p>NBC plans to present 16 days of Olympic coverage across all its networks. Live streaming of all events will be made available on Peacock.</p>
<p>NBC said primetime coverage would air during the week at 8 p.m. ET and 7 p.m. ET on Sunday.</p>
<p>The Closing Ceremony will take place on Feb. 20.</p>
<p>Below you'll find more information about the Opening Ceremony.</p>
<p><b>When is the Opening Ceremony?</b></p>
<p>The Opening Ceremony will begin Friday at 6:30 a.m. ET and will last until 9 a.m. ET.</p>
<p>An evening broadcast will be shown Friday beginning at 8 p.m. ET.</p>
<p><b>How to watch the Opening Ceremony?</b></p>
<p><a class="Link" href="https://olympics.nbcsports.com/2022/02/01/how-to-watch-the-opening-ceremony-for-the-2022-winter-olympics/">NBC</a> will broadcast the event and NBCOlympics.com, and live streaming of all events will be made available on Peacock.</p>
<p><b>What to expect?</b></p>
<p>According to <a class="Link" href="https://olympics.nbcsports.com/2022/01/11/beijing-olympics-opening-ceremony-zhang-yimou/">NBC Sports</a>, Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou will direct the Opening Ceremony.</p>
<p>He was also the Opening Ceremony director at the Summer Olympics in Beijing in 2008.</p>
<p>But this time the number of performers will be drastically different - with only 3,000 performers, down from 15,000 in 2008.</p>
<p>The spectacular event will be held at the “Bird’s Nest” National Stadium, also used for the 2008 Summer Olympics.</p>
<p>The stadium might look empty because officials <a class="Link" href="https://www.thedenverchannel.com/national/newsy/beijing-to-offer-olympic-tickets-to-selected-spectators">announced</a> last month that zero fans from outside the country would be permitted at the events and tickets were not offered to the general public.</p>
<p>Also, the Biden administration <a class="Link" href="https://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/national/u-s-reportedly-to-announce-diplomatic-boycott-of-beijing-olympics">announced</a> in December that they would not send any diplomatic or official representation to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics over human rights.</p>

We've always been here, we've always been a part of sports. We just haven't always been able to be open."In 2019, LeDuc became the first openly gay athlete to win gold in a U.S. pairs' event, according to the United States Olympic &amp; Paralympic Committee.Cain-Gribble and LeDuc are the 2019 and 2022 U.S. champions and will make their first Olympic appearance next month."I think we want to dedicate these performances and this title to all the people that felt like they didn't belong — or were told that they didn't belong — in this sport," Cain-Gribble said during the news conference. <p>The Olympic flame has arrived in Beijing amid calls from critics for a boycott of the Winter Games, which are set to be staged in February.</p>
<p>The flame was received by Beijing's Communist Party Secretary Cai Qi, the top official in the Chinese capital.</p>
<p>Beijing is the first city to be awarded hosting rights to both the Summer and Winter Games.</p>
<p>The flame arrived in China Tuesday, a day after protesters interrupted the flame lighting ceremony in Greece. Those protesters were carrying a banner that read "No genocide games."</p>
<p>"How can Beijing be allowed to host the Olympics given that they are committing a genocide against the Uyghurs?" one protester said.</p>
<p>Local police later detained the protesters.</p>
<p>Human rights critics say China's oppression of political critics, minority groups including Tibetans and Uyghurs and a crackdown in Hong Kong should prompt athletes and politicians to shun the event.</p>
<p>According to <a class="Link" href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-science-greece-beijing-2020-tokyo-olympics-e11ac43c1c0280c87e171d4e800daa1d">The Associated Press</a>, the International Olympic Committee has shied away from criticism about China's reported human rights abuses. IOC President Thomas Bach has said the Games must be "respected as politically neutral ground."</p>
<p>The Beijing Winter Olympics will run from Feb. 4-20. Only spectators from mainland China will be allowed to attend the Games due to the COVID-19 pandemic.</p>

<p>No foreign spectators will be allowed to buy tickets to the Beijing Winter Olympics next year as part of protocols announced by the <a class="Link" href="https://olympics.com/ioc/news/olympic-and-paralympic-winter-games-beijing-2022-updates-on-spectators-vaccination-and-covid-19-countermeasures">International Olympic Committee</a> on Wednesday.</p>
<p>The IOC says tickets will be sold exclusively to spectators residing in China’s mainland who meet the requirements of the event’s COVID-19 countermeasures.</p>
<p>The specific requirements for these Chinese spectators are under development and will be released to the public once they are finalized, according to the IOC.</p>
<p>Organizers also laid out their vaccination rules for the event, which starts Feb. 4 and runs through Feb. 20, 2022.</p>
<p>The IOC says all athletes and participants in the games who are fully vaccinated will enter a closed-loop management system upon arrival. As for participants who are not fully vaccinated, they’ll have to remain in quarantine for 21 days upon arrival in Beijing.</p>
<p>Athletes who can provide a justified medical exemption for vaccination will have their cases considered, according to the IOC.</p>
<p>All vaccines recognized by the World Health Organization or related international organizations, or approved officially by the countries or regions concerned, will be accepted.</p>
<p>As mentioned above, the games will feature a closed-loop management system, which will be in place from Jan. 23 to the end of the Winter Paralympics on March 13.</p>
<p>The IOC says the closed-loop management system will cover all games-related areas, including arrival and departure, transport, accommodation, catering, competitions, and the opening and closing ceremonies.</p>
<p>Within the closed loop, participants will be allowed to move only between games-related venues for training, competitions and work. A dedicated games transport system will also be put in place.</p>
<p>Additionally, the IOC says all domestic and international games participants and workforce in the closed-loop management system will be subject to daily testing.</p>

Seiko Hashimoto appeared in seven Olympics — four Winter Olympics and three Summer Olympics. According to historian Dr. Bill Mallon, her seven appearances is the most by any “multi-season” athlete in the games.Hashimoto made even more history on Thursday in Japan, where women are still rare in the boardrooms and positions of political power. The 56-year-old Hashimoto was named as president of the Tokyo Olympic organizing committee after a meeting of its male-dominated executive board. She replaces 83-year-old Yoshiro Mori, a former Japanese prime minister who was forced to resign last week after making sexist comments about women. Essentially, he said women talk too much.Hashimoto had been serving as the Olympic minister in the cabinet of Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga. She also held a portfolio dealing with gender equality and women’s empowerment. She competed in three Summer Olympics ('88, '92 and '96) in cycling and in four Winter Olympics ('84, '88, '92 and '94) in speedskating. She won a bronze medal — her only medal — in 1992 in at 1,500 meters in speedskating.Hashimoto is tied to the Olympics in many ways. She was born in Hokkaido in northern Japan just five days before the opening ceremony of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Her name “Seiko” comes from “seika,"which translates as Olympic flame in English.According to widely circulated reports in Japan, Hashimoto was reluctant to take the job and was one of three final candidates considered by a selection committee headed by 85-year-old Fujio Mitarai of the camera company Canon. The selection committee met for three consecutive days, a rushed appointment with the postponed Olympics opening in just over five months in the middle of a pandemic and facing myriad problems. Related video: High-Tech Pandemic Fighting Wearables on Display in JapanPolls show about 80% of Japanese want the Olympics canceled or postponed again. There is fear about bringing tens of thousands of athletes and others into Japan, which has controlled the coronavirus better than most countries. There is also opposition to the soaring costs. The official cost is $15.4 billion, though several government audits say the price is at least $25 billion, the most expensive Summer Olympics on record according to a University of Oxford study.Naming a woman could be breakthrough for gender equality in Japan, where females are under-represented in boardrooms and in politics. Japan ranks 121st out of 153 countries on the World Economic Forum’s annual gender equality ranking.Mori, before stepping down, tried to offer the job last week to 84-year-old Saburo Kawabuchi, a former head of the country’s soccer federation. But reports of the behind-closed-door deal were widely criticized by social media, on Japanese talk shows, and in newspaper reports.Kawabuchi quickly withdrew from further consideration.Hashimoto is not without her critics. A Japanese magazine in 2014 ran photographs of her embracing figure skater Daisuke Takahashi at a party during the Sochi Olympics, suggesting it was sexual harassment. She later apologized, and Takahashi said he did not feel harassed. Two other former Olympians were also reported to have been in the running for Mori's job: Yasuhiro Yamashita, the president of the Japanese Olympic Committee who won gold in judo in 1984, and Mikako Kotani, who won two bronze medals in synchronized swimming at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.Kotani is the sports director for the Tokyo Olympic organizing committee. That committee’s leadership is dominated by men, who make up 80% of the executive board.Japan began to roll out vaccines on Wednesday, a critical move that might boost the Olympics. It is several months behind Britain and the United States and other countries. Widespread vaccination is unlikely in Japan when the Olympics open on July 23 with 11,000 athletes, followed by the Paralympics on Aug. 24 with 4,400 athletes. The plan is to keep the athletes in a “bubble” at the Athletes Village, at venues and at training areas. The IOC has said it will not require “participants” to be vaccinated, but it encouraging it.In addition to the athletes, tens of thousands of officials, media, sponsors and broadcasters will also have to enter Japan. Many of them will operate outside the “bubble" in an Olympics that is be driven by television and the billions the IOC receives from selling broadcast rights. The first challenge for Hashimoto could be pulling off the torch relay that begins on March 25 in northeastern Japan. It will crisscross the country with about 10,000 runners, and end at the opening ceremony in Tokyo.___AP Olympics: https://apnews.com/hub/olympic-games and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

<p>The future of the Summer Olympics is still up in the air, and could indicate the future of the 2022 Games in Beijing.</p>
<p>Even with all the restrictions and obstacles, athletes are pushing forward and finding ways to train.</p>
<p>“I started skiing on the World Cup Tour when I was 15 years old, and made the Olympics when I was 17. Now, I’m here training for the 2022 games in Beijing,” Tess Johnson, Olympic mogul skier with the U.S. Freestyle Ski Team, said. “We dedicate our lives to this sport. We eat, sleep, breathe mogul skiing and that's what we have to do to be the best.”</p>
<p>Opportunities to train and compete have become less frequent. On this day, mogul skiers on the U.S. Freestyle Ski Team were practicing on what they call an on-snow training day in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.</p>
<p>“Our goal is to just continue training until we just don't train anymore here on the snow in North America,” Matt Gnoza, the U.S. Mogul Team Head Coach for U.S. Ski and Snowboard, said.</p>
<p>The pandemic has changed how they are able to train.</p>
<p>“We’re used to skiing 12 months a year. From March 2020 to December, for eight months, we didn't have any access to a full length mogul course for our training,” Gnoza said. “We had a schedule going into the year of 12 World Cup events. At this point in time as we approach February, we've had three of the 12. We've seen a large number of events canceled because of COVID and because of travel restrictions.”</p>
<p>Now the team operates in a bubble -- traveling where they can, when they can to get as much practice as possible without interacting with others outside the bubble. It's similar to how the NBA operated its basketball season in 2020.</p>
<p>“When we bubble in to a training camp or bubble in to a competition, we bubble in as a team and we become really dependent on one another in those bubbles,” Gnoza said.</p>
<p>“We can’t go to gyms, we can't go anywhere in public. And that strength training is a huge piece of our careers. It’s how we stay strong, it’s how we avoid injury,” Johnson said. Instead of gyms, it’s garages, outdoor spaces, and using things around you to get in training.</p>
<p>“We bring bands, TRXs, sometimes we bring weights and plates which is very heavy,” Johnson explained. “One of my teammates and I are using towels to pull up and try and get some resistance.”</p>
<p>Training this year has been different for these young athletes.</p>
<p>“This past year especially was difficult to find the motivation and keep going when so many things were getting canceled. It's just part of it though. It’s part of any passion,” she said.</p>
<p>Johnson started competing at 9 years old. Participating in the Olympics has been her dream since she was a young teenager.</p>
<p>For now, these winter athletes are training day in and day out, looking at the future of the Summer Olympics this year to indicate whether or not their competitions will take place.</p>
<p>“We’re looking at our Olympic friends in the Summer Games and hoping for them that the games do happen in the summer of 2021 in Tokyo. That would be a really positive sign for Beijing in 2022,” Gnoza said.</p>
<p>“As long as it happens and we get that opportunity to ski in another Olympics, I’ll be a happy girl,” Johnson said.</p>
