CINCINNATI: Roger Federer has pulled out of the Cincinnati Open with a back injury, meaning Rafael Nadal will be the new world No.1 in next week's rankings.

Federer, who has won the Ohio warm-up tournament for the US Open on seven occasions, said he had picked up the injury in Montreal, where he lost to Germany's Alexander Zverev in the final.

"I am very sorry to pull out of the Western and Southern Open as I always enjoy playing here," Federer said in a statement issued by the tournament.

"Cincinnati has some of the best fans in the world and I am sorry I will miss them. Unfortunately, I tweaked my back in Montreal and I need to rest this week."

Federer's withdrawal assures that Nadal will be top of the rankings when they are issued on August 21. The Spaniard will return to the top spot for the first time since July 6, 2014.

Nadal has spent 141 weeks at No.1 since first ascending there after reaching the Western and Southern semi-finals in 2008.

"It's been tough to get back to No.1," Nadal said.

"I'm happy to have the chance to be in that position."

Nadal will get his Cincinnati campaign underway against veteran Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the second round.

Gasquet accounted for Australia's John-Patrick Smith 6-4 6-4 in his tournament opener on Monday but the win was far from what the regulation scoreline suggested.

Smith, who qualified for the tournament, roared to an early lead in the second set as he evoked memories of Pat Rafter, chipping and charging at will to break Gasquet and take a 4-2 lead in the second.

It wasn't to last though. Gasquet broke back immediately but needed five chances to do so before breaking again and then serving out the match.

Croatia's Ivo Karlovic took a bit longer to get through his first round match.

He took down fellow big man Jiri Vesely 6-3 3-6 7-5 and served 29 aces on his way to a second round clash with Frenchman Jo-Wilfired Tsonga.

Also advancing in straight sets were Fabio Fognini, a 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 winner over Daniil Medvedev; qualifier Mitchell Krueger beat Benoit Paire 6-2 6-1 and Spain's Feliciano Lopez prevailed 7-6 (7-5) 6-1 over Korea's Hyeon Chung.

here is another addition to the injury epidemic that has blown up in tennis over the past couple of months, and this time it affects the man of the moment: reigning Wimbledon and Australian Open champion Roger Federer, who has withdrawn from this week’s Cincinnati Masters because of back trouble.

Many observers suspected that Federer was struggling when he lost to Alexander Zverev in the Rogers Cup final on Sunday.

One of his many remarkable achievements is that he has never retired during any of his 1,363 matches on the ATP tour, but a less defiant character might have walked off the court rather than fight through – as Federer did – to the end of a 6-3, 6-4 defeat.

The problem was one of mobility and flexibility. As the match moved into the second set, Federer lacked his usual snap, particularly on his serve, which became so static that he was only able to roll the ball in at a gentle pace.

On Monday he confirmed that “I tweaked my back in Montreal”, and withdrew from this week’s ATP Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati.

The high attrition rate on the men’s tour at the moment means that only one of the world’s top six will be present in Cincinnati. That man is Rafael Nadal, who has proved surprisingly robust this year after the wrist-tendon tear that spoiled his 2016 season.

As for Federer, he now has a fortnight to recover from whatever the problem is with his back. Even the man himself may not yet know how serious the injury is.

But he will remember that back trouble ruined the majority of his 2013 season – a year in which his winning percentage dropped from its usual level in the low 80s to a moderate 73.

The pilot program will start in Over-the-Rhine. Part of 15th Street will be closed off between Race Street and Vine Street. There are also several parking areas along Vine that will be closed off between Central Parkway and 15th. None of the closures will block private parking areas.

"Where there are problems, we are asking that those business owners reach out to the administration so that we can make those adjustments because what we don't want to do is have unintended consequences where someone is being helped and another business is being harmed," Cincinnati Vice Mayor Christopher Smitherman said.

OTR residents will be able to park for free in more spots because of the loss of street parking.

There will be barricades in the street and each person, not just the tables, must be six feet apart from the next closest person outside their group.

Assistant Cincinnati Police Chief Paul Neudigate says there will be extra police officers in the area.

"Everybody wants to talk about enforcement. What I would like to say is that the police are going to be there to help facilitate this. We know that everybody has been with the pandemic; everybody is eager to get out. Businesses are suffering. They're eager to get back into where they need to be to keep afloat," Neudigate said.

Officers know many people are tired of being kept inside and are wanting any reason to get out of the house.

"People are going to violate. There's going to be questions. Our first response will be to go there and observe, assess and help them work through the process," Neudigate said.

The restaurants and 3CDC are the ones footing the bill for the barricades and paying for the extra police to be there.

The program is open to any restaurant in the city, but they must be approved before they can begin the expanded outdoor dining and they must follow ADA guidelines so they do not block any sidewalks.

To preface: I have no intent of returning for any more of the enduros this season since I can't dedicate any time/money to do the entire season like I have in the past, and since I happened to be in the Cincinnati area for the weekend, this was 100% just for fun. That being said, I know there were teams present that will likely return to finish out the season, so my goal here was to be as competitive as possible without ruining anyone else's race. Well, that wasn't very hard for me to do considering my only two kart options throughout lacked the top end of the more experienced teams' karts, so I kept my battles with what appeared to be lesser-experienced drivers and/or karts that were on equal footing. As a reference, I usually run nearly identical times to my buddy Luis (sometimes he's faster, sometimes I am) and he was a full half second quicker both in qualifying and the race and he only finished third, so that goes to show how pointless it would have been to try and compete for a podium. Although my karts would have been just fine and very competitive for regular heats, in this enduro setting and with the drivers that were on track that day, they just weren't up to the task.

0:00 We begin the race with the usual Le Mans-style start. Considering how poorly I fared in qualifying, I honestly just wanted to walk to the kart but I thought the race could still be interesting so I put in a little effort. I somehow managed to get buckled in and off the line quicker than Luis in kart 27 but I knew his kart was so much quicker so I immediately let him by.

2:15 Luis had told me before the start of the race that kart 19 wasn't a quick one and, of course, it had to be the first one in line for me to switch to. As far as I know, you could switch karts as much as you wanted during the race, but I noticed that when I hopped out of kart 23 it was then pushed to the front of the line. So I was initially thinking I didn't care how I placed as long as I could put up a good fight, but that just wasn't in the cards for me.

2:44 This guy in kart 12 was so frustrating to be behind. He had a really bad habit of stabbing the brake and cutting the steering wheel, so whether it was because he wasn't telegraphing what the person in front of him was going to do or realizing he was going to miss an apex, he made it very difficult at times to stay as close as I could. Not to mention, that kind of driving tends to cause cautions due to catching drivers behind off-guard and creating a slinky effect with everyone else having to jam on their brakes, so if there were faster people behind me I'd immediately let them pass so as to reduce the chances of a re-start.

25:14 A pretty ambitious pass by Luis, but at the same time, you just can't leave the door open like that following a re-start and not expect that to happen. Sometimes I wonder if people even bother to check their peripherals in those situations...

26:04 I tried to go two-wide through this turn and stay to the outside on the exit, so while I expected for there to be some contact I wasn't expecting to practically get T-boned. Hell, considering how we were lined up going into the turn initially, I didn't necessarily have to give him ANY room.

29:02 Checking my watch after the previous re-start, I knew I had to leave soon so I made it a personal goal to pass kart 18 before I headed to the pit. I had been watching people tangle with him throughout the race, struggling to make a pass simply because they were going for every single little gap, when all they had to do was bide their time for a lap or two and go for the easy opening. He was really cool about it too; he wouldn't push and shove like everyone else had been with him. Maybe he was in the same situation I was in and was just doing as much as he could with what he had been given.

31:00 This guy was probably so confused as to what the hell I was doing. The truth was I had to check out of my hotel on time, and since the race had gotten started a lot later than I had anticipated, I didn't have much of a choice but to make an early exit. I made sure to thank Connor for putting on the event and headed out.
