Lindy DeMaria is the parent of two young children in the Forest Hills School District. DeMaria is also a graduate of the district and said she's troubled by the school board's vote Wednesday opposing the use of race-based or identity-based training and teaching. The board passed the "Resolution to Create a Culture of Kindness and Equal Opportunity for All Students and Staff," at the meeting. "There are certainly some ugly things going on right now not representative of this community,” DeMaria said. One board member who voted against the resolution is Dr. Leslie Rasmussen. Rasmussen said the board’s 3-2 vote is already impacting the search for a new superintendent.“Just today we have three finalists and just today one of them said he was not going to come to the second interview because based on last night's event he said his leadership is not the right fit,” Rasmussen said.Edgewood Schools Superintendent, Russ Fussnecker, sent WLWT a copy of his note to Forest Hills School District saying he would like to withdraw his candidacy for the position. The message sent to WLWT read: DeMaria who is also a teacher in another school district said it’s a real possibility parents could look at other education options for their children. The vote comes less than a month after the cancelation of the district's Diversity Day, which students responded to with an organized walkout.

Doctors and experts are weighing in on fentanyl overdoses after 10 people were hospitalized on Friday night in Adams County. The experts WLWT spoke with are not affiliated with the Adams County Jail in any way."I can see the fear, but if we can temper that fear down with what's reality, we can work in the middle. We can find exactly the best way to respond to this," Newtown chief of police, Tom Synan said.Experts are trying to set the record straight about the lethal street drug, fentanyl. "The science and research is showing that we have not seen a confirmed case of what we would call an accidental exposure," Synan said. "Again, part of it's because it's not testing but when there has been testing, it has not shown that there was fentanyl in the system."On Friday night, according to the chief deputy, two inmates overdosed in a cell and were administered Narcan before being taken to the hospital. Both were released Friday night, according to the department. In addition, two male corrections officers, one bailiff, one female corrections officer, one female probation officer and three paramedics all reportedly developed symptoms and were hospitalized Friday. According to officials, some have since been released and others are under observation at the hospital.According to the Adams County sheriff, everyone who was sent to the hospital has been released."A lethal dose can fit on the end of the pencil," licensed professional counselor at Restoring Hope Counseling and Coaching, Nathan McGee, said.McGee has seen the effects fentanyl can have."It's a pretty low chances that you would die from just skin exposure. Most of the time, it's going to be inhaled or injected or ingested to the mouth," McGee said.Experts agree about the impacts of fentanyl. It's how someone can overdose that law enforcement and doctors say is causing confusion."The only way that you could truly have an overdose or get fentanyl into your system is by ingesting it and so that would be an intentional action and so, I mean people who use fentanyl usually inject it or snort it," medical toxicologist and addiction and emergency physician, Dr. Ryan Marino said. Some symptoms of a fentanyl overdose, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention include falling asleep, slow, weak, or no breathing, choking or gurgling sounds. If you see this happening to someone, you should call 911.

Police in Blue Ash are investigating a woman's death, while at the same time applauding the actions of one of their police officers who came to the rescue of that woman's child body cam video.Officer Pete Bronner found an 8-year-old boy wandering alone on Williamson Road.“What's going on? Hey can you talk to me? Run me a squad! This child’s got a severe cut to his leg and just passed out,” Officer Bronner dispatched and heard on body cam video. The child had a severe leg injury and Bronner used a tourniquet to stop the bleeding.“This is going to hurt, ok? This is going to help, ok? It’s going to hurt a little bit though,” Officer Bronner said to the boy. The boy told Bronner he was pushed out a window and his mother was dead. The child led police to the Sonesta ES Suites where they found a trail of blood leading to a room. “Building 19 back here by Williamson. There are bloody footprints in the parking lot. Looks like it’s smaller footprints like maybe the child’s,” an officer says on body cam video.Officers were able to get a key from the front desk and discovered the body of a woman in the bathroom, the victim of a gunshot wound.Medical crews said Bronner's actions saved the child's life. Bronner stayed with the boy throughout his medical care at the hospital. The police department has nominated him for a meritorious service commendation.Police are still trying to figure out what happened to her and how the little boy was injured.

Everyone has Bengal fever. From the hats, to decorations, to the nails. Salons across the tri-state are busy with customers requesting fancy designs to support their hometown team. "I love them. They're absolutely beautiful. We are going to roar the jungle," Bengals fan and Deluxe Nail Salon & Spa customer, Kimberly Brown said. When you step inside the nail salon in Madeira, there are endless colors to choose from. But these days, customers are asking for primarily orange and black."People want their nails done and we are going to win. I mean 'Who Dey' people you know we're going to win," Brown said.Ask for the pattern and the technicians' got you covered."I just asked my person and I said 'just do something Bengals, please,' and he gave me these lovely stripes," Bengals fan and Deluxe Nail Salon & Spa customer, Lisa Donaldson said. From orange sparkles to the eye of a tiger, these clients are ready to show off their Who Dey pride."It's so much busier. All of our clients come in and they want these beautiful Bengal designs, and they're so pumped, and we are pumped because we are also Bengals fans," said Anh-Thu Phan with Deluxe Nail Salon & Spa said. This trend has been around for years. Our very own John London got Who Dey designs on his fingernails in 1989 when the Bengals were in the Super Bowl.No matter the age or the occasion, these Bengal fans are ready to hand in a win. "We are always going to go to the Super Bowl with Joe and Chase on our team. We've got a really good team this year. They are really excellent," Brown said.

A suspect is in custody after police say he fired at an officer in a neighborhood of Westwood this afternoon.Cincinnati Police say it happened in a residential area on Evergreen Avenue.According to CPD, a 14-year-old boy was taken into custody after police say he fired one shot at a police officer. The officer was not hit. Nobody was injured."We didn't hear any kind of shots, or violence going on. I saw all the cops were there and was like what's going on," neighbor, Mike Brieede said.CPD tells us multiple calls came to 911 for suspicious activity in backyards around 1:40 p.m. Officers found a person who matched the description relayed by callers. When they found the suspect, that 14-year-old boy, he allegedly fired one shot at an officer. That officer, according to police, did not fire back. The suspect ran in the opposite direction and was later apprehended. "The one thing I have to say about today is commend the people that live in this neighborhood for calling 911, letting us know what they were seeing because without that, we probably wouldn't have been able to apprehend this individual so quickly," CPD assistant police chief, Mike John said.Earlier this morning, police received calls about burglaries near this area in Westwood involving a car that was wrecked. Investigators are trying to figure out if that situation is connected to this scene. "We're in the very early stages of investigating this," John said. "We have to recover some video surveillance, talk to witnesses, obviously want to interview the officers as well."

A community in Clermont County is gathering to support the sole survivor and victims in a murder-suicide that took place last week. Family and friends came together at the Connection Point Church for a candlelight vigil Wednesday evening to share memories and pray.“He had the biggest heart, he was absolutely loveable,” Ethan Cain’s second-grade teacher, Shannon Neus said. The incident happened around 9:41 a.m. on Monday in the 1100 block of Riebel Ridge. The Clermont County Sheriff's Office says they believe 46-year-old Theresa Cain shot and killed three members of her family including her 13-year-old son Ethan Cain, her husband 50-year-old Steven Cain, her father 74-year-old William Felton, and shot her daughter 20-year-old Samantha Cain who remains in critical condition at UC Medical Center. Steve’s sister, Wanda Garrison, says Ethan was a special kind person who was just like his father.“He was a lot like my brother. A sweet gentle soul. He just loved people,” Garrison said.Garrison says she visited Samantha in the hospital on Wednesday and says she has a long road to recovery, but she’s making great strides.“We were up there earlier today and they had her sitting up. She opened her eyes several times. She squeezed my hand. She's doing remarkably well,” Garrison said.Authorities say Samantha's health progression could provide "vital information" into the incident, which could "assist detectives with answers as to motive, which remains under investigation."There is a GoFundMe page for Samantha’s recovery as she continues to stay at UC Medical Center.

It's been a difficult week for the Florence community after a 21-year-old man was killed. Dan Likiko was killed around the corner from his home last Saturday. This Saturday night, his loved ones honored his memory. "I want everyone to remember Dan as a loving person. He was really sweet," Dan's brother, Romuald Likiko said.Through songs, tears, and heartbreak, this community is honoring Dan and keeping his memory alive. "He did have a really bright future, and it was taken away," Dan's friend, Justin Jutzi, said.He touched many lives from the soccer field to singing his favorite songs. His family says his spirit was strong. Dan's life was cut short last Saturday night when he was shot and killed around the corner from his home. One week later, there's still glass from his car window at the scene."I never imagine putting my brother's picture on this, like having people wear my brother like this and saying RIP. It never crossed my mind before," Romuald said. The man accused of killing Dan is 38-year-old Wayne Haggard. He's charged with murder. This vigil is a moment for reflection and the start of an unwanted beginning for this group of people that loved Dan so much. "It's not the same in the house no more because he brought a different kind of energy and a different vibe in the house, and so it's sad to see it's gone," Romuald said.

A bucket list trip turns into tragedy for a Butler County man and his brother-in-law this weekend. The two were hiking in Utah, according to the Kane County Sheriff's Office when they were killed by flash flooding. Now their family is speaking out to keep their memory alive.Sixty-five-year-old Gary York from West Chester Township, Ohio and 72-year-old John Walter from Kettering, Ohio, were taking a vacation together through the beautiful canyons when the trip took an unexpected turn. "He could do anything. There wasn't anything that grandpa couldn't do," Walter's granddaughter, Taylor Kleiber, said.Walter and York were planning a vacation to Wire Pass and the Buckskin Gulch. York was celebrating his retirement. Walter's wife recently died. "He was definitely excited to go on this trip with Uncle Gary. He was excited to go to it. He was definitely talking it up," Kleiber said. When the family didn't hear from them, they had a feeling something was wrong. "We knew somewhere between Saturday afternoon, Saturday night, Sunday something was really amiss," York's son, Aaron York, said.On Sunday, the Kane County Sheriff's Office in Utah got a call that hikers in the Paria River found a man dead in the canyon. The next day, another body was recovered. "These guys were carried seven to 10 miles by the water down this canyon. That's how long and severe it was," lieutenant with the Kane County Sheriff's Office, Alan Alldredge, said.Just two months ago, Alldredge said two people were killed and one was rescued in the same canyon. "When you get that much water coming through, it comes through with a lot of force. It's very violent and there's nowhere to go," Alldredge said. It's a tragedy nobody expects and now this family is planning funerals for these men who were out enjoying life together. "He would give the shirt off of his back to anybody. If you need something you could call him or anybody just to talk to he was there. He was everybody's everything," Keliber said."He was faithful and I think that’s what my dad and John really shared just a deep mutual respect for their love for family," York said. "He was loyal, he was deep, he was present, and every time I could talk to him, I always hung up feeling refreshed and grateful."

The Cincinnati Police Department is making changes to its policy for police pursuits. The pursuits will only be permitted for violent felony offenses. Pursuits for misdemeanor offenses are not authorized. A spokeswoman said, “The department continually revises our procedures to make sure public safety and the safety of our officers are our top priority.”Veteran police officer and president of the FOP, Dan Hils, support the revision and said it’s becoming a national trend.“The agency has to protect itself and protect its officers from lawsuits and also from injury that is unnecessary,” Hils said.Cincinnati mayor Aftab Pureval embraced the policy revision. He said this change is consistent with his agenda to make all 52 neighborhoods safe He said he has always prioritized health and safety and opportunities to empower the police.“This change is consistent with that agenda and I’m grateful for the partnership with the interim chief (Teresa) Theetge and the city manager in order to accomplish it," Pureval said.In 2020 police were involved in a pursuit. The suspect being chased struck and killed two senior citizens and injured two other bystanders. The family of the two senior citizens is suing the Cincinnati department.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said the people of the Bluegrass are down and hurting because of the tornadoes that hit the state but they are not defeated or broken. It is that kind of resolve that everyone has leaned on this past week in places like Mayfield and Dawson Springs, because there’s not much left to lean on.“Our commitment is the long term, the years it’s going to take to get each and every family impacted and every town impacted back up on their feet. To me this is deeply personal these are our people and they've been harmed by something of the likes we have never seen,” Beshear said.Thousands of homes and businesses have been damaged or destroyed.More than 1,300 state workers are onsite in western Kentucky, including hundreds of national guard members, several hundred workers from Kentucky transportation and forestry and 100 state police troopers. There are also 700 people on the ground from Federal Emergency Management Agency. The governor said the mission now is shifting from search-and-rescue and recovery to one of law enforcement patrolling to prevent looting.“Sadly there appears to be looting and we cannot let it happen. To take advantage of somebody who has lost everything is beyond despicable and if we catch you we will prosecute you to the full extent of the law,” Beshear said.

REAL NOW. IT’S REALLY JUST WHAT’S ALLOCATED TO YOU AND THAT’S ALL YOU GET. THERE’S NO OPPORTUNITY FOR EXTRAS. AARON BROWN OWNS OCTANE OUTLET A PERSONAL WATERCRAFT BUSINESS IN EASTGATE AND MIDDLETOWN. HENOWS KLL A ABOUT THE SUPPLY CHAIN BACKLOG. HE SAYS THE DIRECT IMPACT ON HIS BUSINESS HAS BEEN CHALLENGING BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE. IT’S IMPACTED US BY THE NOT HAVING THE ABILITY TO HAVE IT ORDERED ON A MONDAY AND HERE ON A WEDNESDAY. LET’S SAY IT’S MORE WITH THE MANUFACTURERS THE SUPPLY CHAIN TO GET PRODUCT TO US IS NOT THE HARD PART. IT’S GETTING THE MANUFACTURERS TO BE ABLE TO PRODUCE ENOUGH PRODUCT TO SUPPLY THE DEMAND WHAT WE’VE EXPERIENCED HERE NOW IS THE DEMAND IS SPIKED WAY HIGH IN THE SUPPLY IS LOW IN TERMS OF SULYPP CHAINS. THINGS ARE ACTUALLY IMPROVING. I SPOKE WITH A MEMBER OF PRESIDTEN BIDEN'’ COUNCIL ON ECONOMIC ADVISORS JARED BERNSTEINS SAY THE NEWS IS ENCOURAGING FOR AARON AND OTHER BUSINESS OWNERS ONE OF THE INSTRUCTIONSRO FM THE PRESIDENT IS TO GET OUT THERE AND TRY TO HELP THOSE FOLKS FIGURE OUT HOW THOSE DWELL TIMES THEY’RE NOW DOWN ABOUT A THIRDN I THE PORTS OF LA AND LONG BEACH WHERE 40% OF OUR IMPORTS COME THROUGH. I COULD AGREE WITH THAT. IT IS HEADING IN A BETTER DIRECTION THAN WHERE IT WAS LAST YEAR. LA YEAR WAS VERY TOUGH THIS YEAR NOW, THEY’VE WORKED OUT A LOT OF DIFFERENCESND A CHANGES. LI IKE SAID, SOME OF OUR MANUFACTURERS HAVE CHANGED FROM THE POINT OF NOT USING CONTAINER SHIPS TO BRING THEIR STUFF TO THE TO THE PORTS THEIR AIR CARGOING IT OVER. THEY’VE LEASED OUT CARGO PLANES THROWING IT ON PLANES AND BRING IT OVER TO THE ASSEMBLY FACILITIES, SO IT’S CAUSED OUR MANUFACT. REALLY THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX. WELL, YOU HEARD MR. BERNSTEIN TALK ABOUT THE DIRECTIONS THAT THEY WERE RECEIVING FROM THE PRESIDENT. HE ALSO SAYS CONSIDER THIS HE SAID LOOK AT THE JOB MARKET. HE SAYS UNEMPLOYMENT DROPPED TO 4.2 PERCENT. BUT IT COMES ON A DAY WHENHE T JOB MARKET ALSO POSTED NUMBERS BELOW EXPECTATIONS. WEUL SHO TELL YOU WITH ONLY 210,000 JOBS ADDED IN NOVEM

During the holiday season many people focus on the joy of spending time with family and friends. However, for some there is also pain because of a void left by the loss of a loved one who became a victim of a firearm-injury death.Pastor Jackie Jackson, a community advocate, is using his voice in a different way to address the issue.Jackson understands the pain of gun violence. He chose music as one way to express that pain."When you think I was shot at 10 years old. No 10-year-old should be shot in the summer or in a winter in the fall or in the spring,” Jackson said.He said he's had eight family members in the city of Cincinnati murdered by gun violence. One of them was 14 years old. He's written a song titled ‘Not One More’ in response to the number of deaths.According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 100 people die from gun injuries every day in this country, that includes everything from crimes to suicide.. Jackson said his song should be released in January.

The ribbon-cutting for the new Cincinnati Ballet building in Walnut Hills is part of an ongoing transformation of a neighborhood so might say was forgotten and abandoned.“Walnut Hills is a tremendous neighborhood that welcomed us from our very first conversation before we broke ground. They've been extremely supportive of what this means for walnut hills what this means for a new gateway to the arts,” Cincinnati Ballet president Scott Altman said.Construction is in full swing in the area on a variety of projects. The vision of the Walnut Hills Redevelopment Foundation is about enhancing the quality of life and being inclusive.“We are at the foothill of Eden Park. You can reach out and touch the Art Museum up the hill, and just yards away from the Art Walk. The history here is just very very deep,” Altman said.Gary Leybman is the owner of the Pickled Pig, a restaurant he opened three years ago.He calls the expanding arts in the neighborhood part of the renaissance witnessed the past few years along with new housing and new businesses.“It brings another large piece to the neighborhood. it's going to draw people here. It looks very nice, the building. It just adds value,” Leybman said.

WHAT HAS BEEN TOP OF MIND FOR ME IS THE JOY THAT THEY HAVE OPERATED WITH. THEY KNOW WHAT THEY LOST. THEY APPRECIATE WHAT THEY HAVE. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a statement raising ethical concerns because the Johnson & Johnson vaccine uses an abortion-derived cell line in its development and production. The letter was written by one of the committee chairmen but from there the USCCB decided to send it to all dioceses across the country. Some say if given the option, choose Moderna or Pfizer over Johnson & Johnson. The Archdiocese of Cincinnati has taken a more cautious and neutral approach. New Orleans, Saint Louis, Pittsburgh and some other places called it "morally compromised" Nearly a half-million people make up the Cincinnati Archdiocese. Archbishop Dennis Schnurr sent the letter to all priests in the archdiocese but offered no added commentary. Both Pfizer and Moderna also used fetal-derived cells in testing, but not in their vaccines.Johnson & Johnson issued this statement to one of our sister stations saying: "There is no fetal tissue in the vaccine. We are able to manufacture hundreds of millions of doses using our engineered cell-line system."“I think each person has to make an individual choice what they are comfortable with but what we know is that there is limited vaccine. Currently, all three will save lives,” Hamilton County health commissioner Greg Kesterman said.Pope Francis has said getting vaccinated is critical to saving lives and has encouraged Catholics to not refuse any vaccine if it's available.

A nonprofit that was formed during the creation of the Black Lives Matter mural last year in downtown Cincinnati is gathering this week to restore and rededicate the mural. The mural was painted by teams of artists and dedicated at the city's Juneteenth celebration. The mural currently spans an entire city block in front of City Hall. The city will again shut down down Plum Street between Eighth and Ninth streets Friday until Monday, June 21, for the repainting of the mural. The mural will be revealed Friday, June 18, in front of City Hall. The city passed an ordinance that $125,000 can be used to restore the mural and compensate the artists involved.Black Art Speaks is hosting a week of events to celebrate freedom leading up to the unveiling."If art is reflective of life then naturally the art that Black artists make are reflective of the Black experience and it's an important conversation to have. It's an important history to understand so that you can contextualize why we believe Black Lives Matter," said Michael Coppage a lead artist with Black Art Speaks.Throughout the week, the group will be inviting people to help artists repaint the mural as well as participate in programs, panel discussions and other interactive events. For artist Toilynn O'Neal Turner, the refresh isn't an annoyance, it's a chance to restore."It just kind of reiterated the impact that we need to always bring it back to life and so I'm excited that we are doing it again because that means that this message and the movement is going to bring and captivate the city again," said O'Neal Turner. The week of events begins Saturday and goes until June 19.Black Art Speaks was formed during the creation of the Black Lives Matter mural.
