NFL quarterback Tom Brady will become an NFL analyst when his playing career is over. The seven-time Super Bowl champion has agreed to join FOX Sports as its lead analyst, the network announced Tuesday."Over the course of this long-term agreement, Tom will not only call our biggest NFL games with Kevin Burkhardt, but will also serve as an ambassador for us, particularly with respect to client and promotional initiatives," Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch said. "We are delighted that Tom has committed to joining the Fox team and wish him all the best during this upcoming season."Two months ago, in a shocking turn of events, Brady announced he is returning for his 23rd season less than two months after announcing his retirement from football.Brady, 44, announced via social media that he will be looking to take care of "unfinished business" with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this season."These past two months I've realized my place is still on the field and not in the stands. That time will come. But it’s not now. I love my teammates, and I love my supportive family. They make it all possible. I’m coming back for my 23rd season in Tampa," Brady wrote. The seven-time Super Bowl champion and five-time Super Bowl Most Valuable Player will be entering his third season with the Buccaneers after playing the first 20 years of his career with the Patriots, who drafted him with the 199th overall pick in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL draft. On Feb. 1, Brady announced on social media that he would no longer be making the "competitive commitment" needed to play at a high level in the National Football League.Brady's emotional statement specifically mentioned family, the league, his fans, the Buccaneers and others who played a role in his historic career. Notably, coach Bill Belichick, the Kraft family and the words "Patriots" and "retirement" were not mentioned in the statement."I have the greatest respect for Tom personally and always will," Patriots owner Robert Kraft wrote in a statement. "His humility, coupled with his drive and ambition, truly made him special. I will always feel a close bond to him and will always consider him an extension of my immediate family."Brady won his first championship over 20 years ago in just his second NFL season, as he led the Patriots to an upset over the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI on Feb. 3, 2002.He then led New England to back-to-back titles during the 2003 and 2004 seasons. In the process, the Patriots set an NFL record by winning 21 straight games between Week 5 of the 2003 season and Week 8 of the 2004 campaign. After a decade, Brady and the Patriots won three titles in a five-season span from 2014 to 2018. He led two incredible Super Bowl comebacks against the Seattle Seahawks (Feb. 1, 2015) and the Atlanta Falcons (Feb. 5, 2017), the latter of which marked the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history.Brady's final championship with the Patriots came against the Rams, who relocated to Los Angeles, in Super Bowl LIII on Feb. 3, 2019.TB12 left New England in free agency after the 2019 season and joined the Buccaneers in March 2020. Former Patriots star tight end Rob Gronkowski teamed up with Brady in Tampa and they were both instrumental in leading the Bucs' 31-9 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs that season. Brady claimed his fifth Super Bowl MVP trophy in the process.Brady's final season ended with a heartbreaking loss to the Rams in the divisional round of the playoffs last weekend.Patriots fans did get a chance to show their appreciation to Brady this season when he and the Buccaneers visited New England in Week 4. Tampa Bay won 19-17 at Gillette Stadium. In his illustrious career, Brady has earned three NFL regular-season MVP awards (2007, 2010, 2017) and earned his record 15th Pro Bowl selection this season. A man is facing multiple charges in connection to the vandalism of the "Bewitched" statue in Salem, Massachusetts, as the landmark was doused with red paint on Monday.Salem police told sister station WCVB that 32-year-old Kylynn Chambers, a man experiencing homelessness and living in Salem, was arrested on charges of defacing property, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. The "Bewitched" statue, a 6-foot-tall bronze sculpture at the corner of Essex and Washington streets, pays tribute to the well-known 1960s television sitcom "Bewitched" and the filming of its seventh season in Salem. The statue depicts Elizabeth Montgomery, the actress who played the lead character Samantha Stephens, riding a broomstick next to a crescent moon.Witnesses said they saw the "Bewitched" statue being defaced at about 5 p.m. Monday."We smelled, actually, the paint in the air," one witness said. "He was just standing here very nonchalantly with red paint just painting the statue."Photos shared by one witness, Tim Keough, show part of the statue depicting Montgomery's face and torso covered in red paint."There was nothing written on it. There was no sign. He could have spray-painted something on the ground. None of that," said Salem resident Jeffrey Lilley. "It was just from her waist up and her arms and her face." "She's kind of become, you know, a signature statue in this town. So it's sad. It's random, but it's got people talking about it," said an employee of the Peabody Essex Museum. "So she's going to get some more publicity."Beth Crowley of Witch City Walking Tours said "this isn't the first time that people were really upset about the statue.""People believed that the 'Samantha' statue was actually making a joke of the Salem witch trials, which was a very somber time," she said.Crews power washed the "Bewitched" statue Monday night and were able to clean all the paint off of it, allowing tourists to take photos with it.There is no serious damage to the statue, but some of the patina — the finish over the statue's surface that developed over time due to weather, stress and/or age — was washed off during the cleaning process."Bewitched" aired for eight seasons on ABC from September 1964 to March 1972. The show is about a witch who marries an ordinary man and tries to lead a normal life.Montgomery earned five Primetime Emmy Award nominations and four Golden Globe Award nominations for her work on "Bewitched." She died of cancer in 1995 at the age of 62.The "Bewitched" statue in Salem was unveiled in 2005.

<p>"She's kind of become, you know, a signature statue in this town. So it's sad. It's random, but it's got people talking about it," said an employee of the Peabody Essex Museum. "So she's going to get some more publicity."</p>
<p>Beth Crowley of Witch City Walking Tours said "this isn't the first time that people were really upset about the statue."</p>
<p>"People believed that the 'Samantha' statue was actually making a joke of the Salem witch trials, which was a very somber time," she said.</p>
<p>Crews power washed the "Bewitched" statue Monday night and were able to clean all the paint off of it, allowing tourists to take photos with it.</p>
<p>There is no serious damage to the statue, but some of the patina — the finish over the statue's surface that developed over time due to weather, stress and/or age — was washed off during the cleaning process.</p>
<p>"Bewitched" aired for eight seasons on ABC from September 1964 to March 1972. The show is about a witch who marries an ordinary man and tries to lead a normal life.</p>
<p>Montgomery earned five Primetime Emmy Award nominations and four Golden Globe Award nominations for her work on "Bewitched." She died of cancer in 1995 at the age of 62.</p>
<p>The "Bewitched" statue in Salem was unveiled in 2005. </p>

A Massachusetts zoo is seeing a spike in cuteness among its animals with a new addition.Stone Zoo in Stoneham, Massachusetts, announced that a baby prehensile-tailed porcupine, called a porcupette, was born Saturday and is settling in well with its family in the "Windows to the Wild" space. The porcupette, which weighed just over a pound at birth, is the third offspring for 9-year-old mom, Prickles, and 10-year-old dad, Shadow.Pete Costello, assistant curator at Stone Zoo, said staff are weighing the porcupette every morning and that the baby is gaining weight at a healthy pace. The baby, believed to be a male, also appeared to be healthy and alert during its first medical exam on Monday.Prehensile-tailed porcupines are born with reddish-brown hair that will eventually change color and soft quills that will harden over time. They are found in the forests of South America and their tails act like a fifth limb, helping them grasp branches as they move through trees. This species of porcupette is fairly independent after birth and do not nurse often, so zoo guests may see the new baby hanging out on a perch by itself. They are nocturnal and spend much of their time resting during the day. Watch the video above for the full story.

Are you still wondering where your tax refund is several months after you filed? You're not alone and people's patience is wearing thin. The IRS is further behind in processing returns in 2022 than it was this same time last year. The IRS shut down its offices for several months back in 2020 and ever since has struggled to recover, which means incredible delays in processing tax refunds, especially for people who filed paper returns. The taxpayer advocate says at the end of May, which is the most recent number available, the IRS had 21.3 million unprocessed returns, including 8.2 million personal returns.Last year, at the same time, that number was less than 20 million, with just 6 million personal returns. Before the pandemic, the taxpayer advocate said the IRS typically paid refunds on paper returns in 4 to 6 weeks. Now, it's generally 6 months or more, so all you can really do is keep waiting. The IRS director promised to finally crush the pandemic backlog this year, but it hasn't happened so far.Phone service is also a mess because many of the people who answer the phones are still helping process paper returns.Watch the video above for the full story.

A staff member at a Boston university is being treated for minor injuries after a package delivered to the campus detonated while they were opening it.A spokesperson for Northeastern University said the explosion happened shortly after 7 p.m. at Holmes Hall. No students were injured. The Boston Police Department's Bomb Squad responded to the scene to investigate the incident, according to the spokesperson. Responding police officers and Boston Emergency Medical Services personnel found the staff member, a 45-year-old man, suffering from minor hand injuries. That man was transported to an area hospital for treatment."I take very seriously that this city is home to everyone's young people, from our littlest learners up to our college students and university staff," said Boston Mayor Michelle Wu. "So we want to make sure we emphasize that this is of the utmost priority: the safety and well-being of all of our young people here."A search revealed a second similar package that was ultimately rendered safe by the Boston Police Department's bomb squad.Cox said the Boston Police Department is working with its law enforcement partners at Boston Regional Intelligence, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF)."We are going to be working and continue to work with all our campus security partners, as well, to make sure all the students here are safe — as well as the rest of the residents in the city," the commissioner said. The FBI's Boston Division confirmed that it is offering its full support to its partners, especially Boston police, including the full resources of the Joint Terrorism Task Force, evidence response team and special agent bomb technicians."We're fully integrated with our partners and remain committed to resolving the incident safely," said FBI Boston Assistant Special Agent in Charge Jason Cromartie.Sister station WCVB reporter Mike Beaudet said he was teaching a journalism class at Northeastern University at the time. He said his class was moved outside but that neither he nor any of his students heard any explosions."I didn't hear any explosions. I don't think any of the other students did," Dicorpo said. "But we heard the fire alarm and so we assumed we should leave.""It's pretty late at night. Our class was an exception. Most students are home for the day. There's not a lot of classes going on," Maize said.At about 10 p.m., NewsCenter 5's Nathalie Pozo received an alert from the university stating that the scene at Holmes Hall was contained and the campus was secured and that Northeastern police were working closely with Boston police to secure the area."It's very important to note that our campus is secure and we will maintain a secure campus in perpetuity," said Northeastern University police Chief Michael Davis. "That's our work and that's what we continue to do, and we'll be working with our partners here to get this resolved."

WELL, MARIA, THOSE STUDENTS, THEY WERE PRETTY SURPRISED. THEY HAD NO IDEA THAT ONE OF THEIR CLASSMATES HERE WAS ACTUALLY A 32 YEAR OLD WOMAN. SHE DEFINITELY DIDN’T LOOK 32, I CAN TELL YOU THAT. I WOULDN’T HAVE THOUGHT SHE WAS 32. BUT THEN SHE WAS 32. THESE HIGH SCHOOL FRESHMEN ARE STILL TRYING TO UNDERSTAND HOW SOMEONE THEY SAW IN THE HALLS EVERY DAY WAS ACTUALLY AN ADULT WOMAN ATTENDING CLASS ALONGSIDE THEM. BUT YOU DIDN’T THINK TWICE. YOU THOUGHT SHE WAS IN YOUR CLASS. I THOUGHT SHE WAS A NORMAL STUDENT. I DIDN’T KNOW SHE WAS 32, OLDER THAN THE WHOLE TEACHER. INVESTIGATORS SAY THE WOMAN ATTENDED JEREMIAH BURKE, BRIGHTON AND ENGLISH HIGH SCHOOLS TRANSFERRING FROM SCHOOL TO SCHOOL OVER THE COURSE OF THE LAST YEAR UNDER FALSE NAME. THE SUPERINTENDENT SAYS IT APPEARS TO BE A CASE OF EXTREMELY SOPHISTIC FRAUD. SHE SOUNDED LIKE A TEENAGER, LIKE I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS. RIGHT NOW SHE FEELS COOL. SHE WAS A CRUEL PERSON, JUST LIKE JUST JUST LIKE A NORMAL HIGH SCHOOL. STUDENTS SAY THE WOMAN TRANSFERRED FROM JEREMIAH BURKE HIGH SCHOOL A FEW MONTHS AGO AND INVESTIGATORS SAY PAPERWORK, IRREGULARITIES RAISED A RED FLAG. WE DO NOT HAVE ANY EVIDENCE AT THIS MOMENT OF ANY HARM OR RISK TO THE YOUNG PEOPLE. THANK GOODNESS SHE WAS REALLY NICE, ACTUALLY. YEAH. NO, NO WEARING NOTHING WHILE THE WOMAN WAS ENROLLED IN SCHOOL, THE DEPARTMENT OF CHILDREN AND FAMILIES SAYS SHE WAS ALSO WORKING FOR DCF AS A SOCIAL WORKER. SHE’S NO LONGER WORKING FOR THE STATE AGENCY AND THE MOTIVATION TO ENROLL IN HIGH SCHOOL IS STILL A MYSTERY. THE QUESTION IS LIKE THE SCHOOL DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT IT EARLIER THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE YEAR. I’M LIKE, CONFUSED. SO THERE ARE STILL A LOT OF QUESTIONS TONIGHT. THAT WOMAN’S FATHER SAYS SHE IS NOW GETTING MENTAL HEALTH

High school students in Boston are trying to comprehend how someone they saw in the halls every day was actually an adult posing as their classmate.A 32-year-old woman attended Jeremiah Burke, Brighton and English High Schools throughout Boston, transferring from school to school for the past year under false names. While the woman was enrolled in school, the Department of Children and Families said she was also working for DCF as a social worker. She is no longer working for the state agency and the motivation to enroll into high school is still a mystery.

INTRODUCES US TO GAVIN FOR WE LEARNED ABOUT AS QUICKLY THAT GAVIN FORD DOES NOT LIVE IN ORDINARY LIFE. AS WE LEARNED THAT GAVIN FORD IS AN EXTRAORDINARY KID. I’M LIKE ANYBODY ELSE. I DON’T WANT YOU TO TREAT ME DIFFERENTLY. HE WAS THE FIRST KID TO PLAY IN THE LITTLE LEAGUE MAJORS IN A WHEELCHAIR IN HIS HOMETOWN OF NORTH REDDING. FUNNY STORY, ACTUALLY. MY FIRST AT BAT. FIRST PITCH, I GOT HIT RIGHT IN THE NECK. JUST THE FASTBALL RIGHT TO THE NECK. AND I WAS KIND OF A WELCOME. YOU’RE HERE. IT’S AMAZING THAT HE’S HERE. BORN WITH SPINA BIFIDA, A NEURAL DEFECT OF THE SPINE. HE USES EVERY OUNCE OF ENERGY TO DO ALL THE THINGS HE LOVES TO DO THROUGH ADAPTIVE BASKETBALL IN LACROSSE, SURFING AND BASEBALL, AND HIS FAVORITE SLED HOCKEY. GAVIN IS A 15 YEAR OLD ATHLETE IN SPITE OF YEARS OF SURGERIES AND MONTHS SPENT AWAY FROM RINKS IN COURTS. AND IN 2020, TWO OUT OF 365 DAYS OF THE YEAR, GAVIN WAS BEDBOUND FOR 192 OF THEM. STILL, HE HOPES ONE DAY TO MAKE IT ALL THE WAY TO THE PARALYMPICS. BUT HIS GOALS DON’T END THERE. I LEARNED ENGINEERING ALL THIS YEAR. I WANT TO BE AN ARCHITECT. THAT’S MY DREAM JOB. NOT EVERY BUILDING IS ACCESSIBLE, SO I DON’T REALLY WANT THAT TO BE A STRUGGLE FOR ANYBODY BECAUSE I KNOW I HAVE TO STRUGGLE WITH THAT. HE’S AMAZING, BUT WHAT I REALLY RESPECT IS HIS WILLINGNESS TO SHARE HIS OPPORTUNITY FOR THE BENEFIT OF OTHERS. SO WHY DO WE DECIDE TO INTRODUCE YOU TO GAVIN FORD TODAY? BECAUSE KIDS LIKE GAVIN ARE NOT JUST HERE TO INSPIRE OTHER KIDS LIKE GAVIN. THEY’RE HERE TO SHOW THE REST OF THE WORLD HOW TO LIVE IN NORTH ANDOVER JOSH BROGADIR WHY WCVB SPORTSCENTER 5? WELL PUT.

Gavin Ford insists on not being treated any differently, despite the extraordinary para-athlete living a life that is anything but ordinary.Ford was the first kid in his hometown of North Reading, Massachusetts, to play in the Little League majors division while in a wheelchair."Funny story, actually. My first at bat, first pitch, I got hit right in the neck. Just a fastball right to the neck and I was kind of like: 'Welcome, you're here,'" Ford said while smiling and chuckling.Born with spina bifida, a neurological birth defect in which an area of the spinal column doesn't form properly, Gavin uses every ounce of energy in order to do all of the things he loves to do. He is able to participate in a number of sports from adaptive basketball and lacrosse to surfing and baseball, and his favorite, sled ice hockey. That is all despite years of surgeries and months away from fields, rinks, courts and the ocean."In 2022, out of 365 days of the year, Gavin was bed-bound for 192 of them," said Jen Ford, Gavin's mother.Gavin hopes one day to participate in the Paralympics, but he also has an even more altruistic goal."I learned engineering all this year. I want to be an architect. That's my dream job," Gavin said. "Not every building is accessible, so I don't really want that to be a struggle for anybody because I know I have to struggle with that.""He's amazing, but what I really respect is his willingness to share his opportunity for the benefit of others," Jen Ford said.

<p>
Management of a thrift store in a Boston neighborhood says a large hazmat response at one of its locations was the result of someone unknowingly donating an antique container for radioactive material.A representative of Fenway Health, which owns and operates Boomerangs thrift stores, and the manager of the store location said a donation was this made to the store this week that included a small lead container with a screw top. An employee of the Boomerangs store in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood eventually recognized the item as a "lead pig," which was used to transport radioactive materials and shield people from radiation. The discovery prompted Boston Emergency Medical Services personnel and hazmat teams to respond to the store.Investigators found the "lead pig" did at some point hold a type of radioactive material that is often found as a powdery substance. Inspectors determined the container had a very low level of Type A radiation, which should not be a concern for staff or patrons. A full inspection of the store was conducted and it was found to be safe. The "lead pig" was removed by the proper authorities for further investigation. As a precaution, three Boomerangs employees who directly handled the "lead pig" without gloves were transported to Boston Medical Center for an evaluation and further testing. All three employees were released from the hospital Thursday night and are doing fine, according to management.Dee Moore, the manager of the store, further reiterated in a Facebook post that everyone who was in the store Wednesday and Thursday should not be worried about radiation exposure."This was a first for many folks involved, and given the level of risk and unusual circumstances, the utmost precautions and care were taken to ensure that the item was removed safely and that there was no potential spread of the contamination," Moore wrote. "We're grateful to the teams of people who helped us!"Bob Johnson, the director of safety, security and facilities for Fenway Health, said in a statement that the Boston Police Department does not deem the donation of the "lead pig" as a criminal act. But until the police investigation is complete, Johnson said the company will remain on high alert for the store in Jamaica Plain to keep the store and employees safe."(Fenway Health) Safety and Security will conduct a full review of this situation and review the process of receiving donations," Johnson stated. "This appears to be someone with good intent to make a donation who didn't realize what this item may have been."The store was closed Friday due to the emotional impact on the shop's staff, but it reopened on Saturday.Boomerangs has other locations.

Cameras also captured video of Walshe's gray Volvo XC90 being put into the police station garage. Ana Walshe was last seen by a family member in her Cohasset home between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Jan. 1, according to Cohasset police Chief William Quigley. Quigley also said Walshe's cellphone, as well as her credit and debit cards, have been inactive since New Year's Day.She was reported missing on Wednesday, simultaneously by Brian Walshe and her employer, Washington, D.C.-based real estate company Tishman Speyer. The Norfolk County District Attorney's Office has since taken the lead on the missing person investigation after Cohasset police, the Massachusetts Special Emergency Response Team, Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council and other agencies searched around the Walshe family's home off of the Chief Justice Cushing Highway (Route 3A) from Friday through Sunday.Multiple marked and unmarked police cruisers arrived at the Walshes' home at about 9 a.m. on Sunday, less than 16 hours after Massachusetts State Police and Cohasset Police Department officials said the ground search would not resume unless they developed new information that would warrant a renewed search.Sources told sister station WCVB's Ted Wayman that investigators arrived at the Walshe family's home with a search warrant on Sunday. Detectives were seen wearing protective layers on their shoes as they searched in and around the house.Video showed that the search appeared to extend to sheds near the home, areas where police had not focused on during earlier searches. "Police developed probable cause to believe that (Ana Walshe's) husband, Brian Walshe, had committed the crime of misleading police investigators," reads a statement from the Norfolk County District Attorney's Office.Sister station WCVB 5's Brianna Borghi saw young children being led out of the house Sunday morning. Ana and Brian Walshe have three young boys together between the ages of 2 and 6. Borghi also saw a red truck pull up to the home earlier Sunday morning and drop off an older woman, who spoke with an investigator for a few minutes. That same woman later appeared to leave the home with the children in a different vehicle. Borghi then saw a man leave the home in a separate vehicle shortly thereafter.Brian Walshe is expected to be arraigned Monday morning in Quincy District Court, and the DA's Office said additional facts may or may not be entered into the record at that time.Circumstances of Ana Walshe's disappearanceA family member told police Ana Walshe was supposed to take a ride-share to Boston Logan International Airport in an attempt to catch an early morning flight to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on Jan. 1."It's been said that she was called to D.C. to handle some type of emergency at one of the properties that she manages. That's why she was attempting to go to D.C. (on New Year's Day)," Quigley said.Quigley added, however, that Cohasset police had been in contact with rideshare companies and have so far been unable to confirm that she got into a rideshare vehicle outside her home. The police chief also said he was able to confirm with all airlines that Walshe did not board a flight this week. Quigley said officers from the Metropolitan Police Department in D.C. searched the Walshe family's Washington townhouse but found no sign of Ana Walshe there. A spokesperson for the Cohasset Police Department said Cohasset and state police detectives arrived in Washington early Saturday morning as part of the investigation. On Sunday, the Norfolk District Attorney's Office said those investigators were returning from D.C., where they sought any possible evidence or information concerning Ana Walshe's potential whereabouts.Friends said Ana Walshe commutes to Washington during the week to work for Tishman Speyer, a job she started last year. She is active on social media, but friends say those accounts went silent on New Year's Day when she was due to catch a flight."She's a loving and loyal wife and mother of three beautiful boys," Alissa Kirby, a friend, said. "She loves her family, and I know in my heart that of her choice, she would not go a day without speaking to her husband and her kids." On Friday, the Massachusetts State Police Special Emergency Response Team and a regional police team spent much of the day searching the area near the Walshe family's home in Cohasset. The search was called off for the night after an area of approximately one square mile was covered.Authorities said 20 troopers from the MSP Special Emergency Response Team, a specialized unit trained in search and rescue operations, as well as three K9 teams, Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council officers and the State Police Air Wing Unit, once again searched wooded areas near Walshe's home with negative results on Saturday. State police divers also searched a small stream and an in-ground pool on the property with negative results, according to authorities. Police said Ana Walshe is 5 feet, 2 inches tall and weighs 115 pounds. She has brown hair, brown eyes and an olive complexion and speaks with an eastern European accent.Anyone with information about Ana Walshe's whereabouts is asked to contact Det. Harrison Schmidt at 781-383-1055 extension 6108 or email hschmidt@cohassetpolice.com. Watch the video above for the full story.

A medical device company in Massachusetts has both saved and changed a young man's life over the last several years.Four years ago, Adam Millar was 19 years old and pursuing a hockey career in his home state of Colorado when he suddenly came down with what he thought were flu symptoms, but his heart had actually lapsed into atrial fibrillation, which quickly turned into cardiogenic shock."I was an active person and then three days later, I was bedridden and on life support," Millar said.Millar nearly died, but two Impella heart pumps, the world's smallest heart pumps designed and manufactured by Danvers-based Abiomed, saved his life."It's crazy," he said. "Just kind of the simple idea of allowing your heart to rest and recover, and let these pumps pump blood throughout your body while it can relax and recover. And then three days later, your heart is fully back to functioning."After recovering from his heart attack, Millar flew to Danvers and began an internship at Abiomed. That is where he met Casey Mucci, who began working in the company's human resources department just six months earlier."His story was very well-known around the office and when he was coming on board, everyone was like: 'Adam Millar is coming!' and I was like: 'Who's this Adam Millar guy?'" Mucci said.It turns out that Mucci accepted Millar's proposal when he asked her to marry him a few months ago, and that the company that made the device that saved his heart brought their two hearts together."I'm very, very grateful that I had the opportunity to join this company," Mucci said. "Obviously, it led me to Adam and our future, and I'm very grateful."Millar, now a senior student at Northeastern University living in Malden, said he lives every day with passion, purpose and gratitude, even about his close call with death."I mean, it saved my life, brought me to my future wife and gave me a passion for a career," Millar said. When Millar graduates from Northeastern in May, he plans to use his mechanical engineering degree to develop the kind of cardiovascular medical devices that saved his life.

There are many signs that adorn the 26 miles of the Boston Marathon course. But one sign caught our attention, and our hearts.A Massachusetts boy held a sign that said, "I beat cancer, my dad beat the marathon."The boy's father told sister station WCVB that his son was diagnosed with leukemia at 4 years old. During his treatment, one of the charities that helped the family was Coughs for Kids With Cancer. He's now cancer free. The experience inspired the boy's father to run in this year's Boston Marathon to raise money for Coughs for Kids With Cancer."It was a help to us," the boy's father said. "It was important to me and our family to give back to the charity."

Roberta "Bobbi" Gibb's love of running began when she was a young child. She felt it was a way of living and seeing the world."I just wanted to experience life and running was a time when I felt the life force of the universe," Gibb, who is now 80 years old, said.Gibb, a native of Winchester, Massachusetts, is a legend in the sport of distance running, as she is the first woman to ever run and complete the Boston Marathon. In 1966, the Boston Marathon was still an all-men's race, but Gibb applied to run in it anyway. She received a letter back in response to her application that denied her entry and read: "Women are not physiologically able to run marathon distances. We can't take the medical liability.""I crumpled it up and threw it away," Gibb said. Gibb, who was living in San Diego, California at the time, ran out her door after tossing the rejection letter and raced up the beach for 20 miles to release her anger. After that run, she decided that she would find any way to run the Boston Marathon that year. Gibb convinced her initially reluctant mother to drive her to the marathon start line on April 19, 1966."This — that people think is impossible — is going to throw into question all the other misconceptions and false beliefs about women," Gibb said she told her mother. On race day, Gibb ran around Hopkinton, which is located around 30 miles from Boston, for 40 minutes to warm up for the marathon and find a place where she could sneak into the field of runners. She eventually hid behind a forsythia bush that was near the start line and joined the race pack shortly after the starting gun.Gibb was wearing her brother's Bermuda shorts, a hoodie and boy's sneakers in an effort to disguise herself, but runners around her eventually started to figure out that they were racing against a woman."At first, they didn't realize that I was a woman," Gibb said. "Then, I could feel this studious silence behind me and I could hear the guys behind me talking. 'Is that a girl? Is that a girl?' I turned around and they said: 'It is a woman! Wow, this is fantastic!'" Gibb said the runners around her also told her that they would not let her get kicked out of the race, as word that there was a woman competing in the Boston Marathon quickly spread."The guys were really supportive. They said. 'We won't let them throw you out. It's a free road,'" Gibb said. Gibb recalled the press showing up to her parents’ home, asking about her competing in the race. She took the attention to be a positive aspect of her run."This is what I wanted to do. I wanted to stop the stupid war between the sexes and show men and women can share all of life," Gibb said.Gibb went on to have a working career, which not many women had back in those days, first as a lawyer and later as an artist. She continues to create paintings and sculptures today. She also continues to run: as much as 10 miles through local trails and on the beach. Her artwork is often influenced by her running journey because, for Gibb, running was always about the world she saw along the way."When I run I feel — I still do — when I’m racing down the beach: 'Wow, I’m alive! I’m alive!'" she said.

The sound of sizzling sweet sausages will have to wait. The Major League Baseball season is delayed until at least April 7, as the league and players association fail to make a deal."It’s a big blow psychologically and financially for everyone around the park and everyone in Boston," said David Littlefield, the owner of Sausage Guy. Littlefield’s stand near Fenway Park lives and dies with the baseball season, and the lack thereof."I’m concerned about how long it could go on, that’s the big concern," Littlefield said. "If it gets lengthened and longer — that could get really bad.""There’s so many people who make money with the business of baseball, lot of ancillary businesses depend on that," Adam Sperling, General Manager of Boston's Hotel Commonwealth said. The Kenmore Square hotel has a baseball-themed room with a Babe Ruth card and other cool memorabilia. For now, it sits empty. While the first two series are canceled, Sperling is hopeful the two sides will reach a deal for the sake of society."We’re looking to give people reasons to travel and get out and be social," Sperling said. "This obviously takes one of these key reasons away, so we’re going to hope this gets resolved quickly."

A Massachusetts man is suing Uber and one of the company's drivers, claiming he was left a quadriplegic following a crash because the company was negligent.Attorneys for 31-year-old William Good said the crash happened on April 30, 2021, on Highland Avenue in Somerville. Good, who was a passenger in the vehicle, said he felt the vehicle swerve before it crashed into a parked car, according to his attorneys. The Uber driver allegedly asked Good to get up, insisting he was not injured, Good's attorneys claim. The lawsuit claims Uber "failed to appropriately screen, hire and supervise their driver, resulting in severe and life-changing injuries to Mr. Good, who is now a quadriplegic."“I struggle daily with the knowledge that this Uber employee was hired as a professional driver – the last thing he should have been hired to do. But most of all, I struggle to understand how a company that is so sophisticated has been completely unable to ensure the safety of its drivers on the roads,” Good said.Good is seeking $63 million in damages.Uber has not commented on the lawsuit.

Bill Moore has been on an emotional roller coaster. Two months ago, the Boston widower lost his home and all of his belongings to a fire early on the morning of Halloween. His neighbors at the Boston Trailer Park came together to start a fundraiser to help him rebuild and hundreds of people have donated. The fundraiser was created on Dec. 18 but was stuck at a few hundred dollars for several days. There was a huge outpouring of support after sister station WCVB first reported Moore's story. As of Tuesday evening, the total had surpassed its goal of $50,000."I was stupefied, if that’s such a word," Moore said on Tuesday. Moore says he's not looking for a fancy home, just something that will help him get by and return to the neighborhood he loves. He wants to express gratitude for all the generous donations that are making that possible. “It’s just like winning the lottery," he said. "I can’t imagine what people feel like when they win millions of dollars, this is a lower level but to me, this is a million dollars to me."Moore is living in temporary housing, arranged by the city, which is due to expire at the end of the year. The hope is that the deadline will be extended because of his underlying health issues. The online fundraiser is still collecting money to help Moore realize his dream of rebuilding.

lot of commuters told us that they figured this was a scary situation. But until they actually saw that video, they had no idea how many people were involved and how helpless they were in that moment. The video is hard to watch dozens of people tumbling backwards as the escalator they're standing on suddenly stops going up and reverses itself accelerating backwards at a rapid rate of speed. People can't catch themselves and begin piling up at the bottom. Oh my God. Oh wow! I'd be terrified, stunned commuters told us the back bay escalator in question is still blocked off. Sarah Quinn was near the top of the escalator that day at malfunctions, there was just a pile of people and everyone was cut up. Everyone was bloody just kept grinding at each person that was at the bottom. O'Quinn says many of those hurt were Pats and Saints fans returning from Gillette at least nine people were injured that day. In a statement, an attorney for two Louisiana families who are hurt told us his clients continued to recover and still face a long road following this incident there now suing the escalator maintenance contractor cone. I mean that is horrible and has been closed for months so it's sort of like I do wish they had more better maintenance pony told us that safety is a top priority and that MBI Ta escalators are routinely inspected the back bay unit that malfunctioned in september had in fact passed state inspection on july 30th and the M. B. Ta tells us that can service that back bay escalator in early september on the seventh. They declined to comment, though, on the incident in general, saying it is still under investigation. We're live in boston tonight. I'm mary salata WCVB.

A Massachusetts man is now out of state custody after spending over two decades in prison for what the court is now calling a wrongful murder and armed robbery conviction.James Lucien, 48, was serving a life sentence following his 1995 conviction, which was connected to the 1994 deadly shooting of 23-year-old Ryan Edwards.Lucien had an emotional reunion with his family after Judge Robert Ullman cleared the convictions against him Tuesday in Suffolk County Superior Court."I feel good because I'm with my family now," Lucien said. "I've been waiting a whole 27 years for this, and now I have the opportunity to be free."Dennis Toomey, Lucien's defense attorney, argued during Tuesday's hearing that the murder and robbery convictions against his client should be tossed because of an improper police investigation."The heart of our appellate argument here is that the jury simply did not hear evidence they could have used to acquit Mr. Lucien, so he didn't get due process," Toomey said. The Suffolk County District Attorney's Office said a former Boston police officer involved in Lucien's case, Det. John Brazil, participated in a sprawling corruption scheme from 1990 to 1996 with other officers, in which they conspired to lie, rob and steal from drug dealers by submitting false warrant applications and then seize cash, representing drug trade proceeds, and kept it for themselves."Almost everywhere we look in this case, there are serious problems," Special Suffolk Assistant District Attorney Jeanne Kempthorne said during Tuesday's hearing.Family members of Ryan Edwards, the man shot and killed in 1994, opposed Lucien's release."I think it's horrible," said Dionne Richards, Edwards' sister. "Now he's free and there's nobody to help our family, and my brother's murder goes as another unsolved murder."Ullman urged Edwards' family not to blame Lucien, but instead Brazil, who allegedly lied and tampered with evidence."It's clear to me that justice may not have been done as to the murder and armed robbery charges," the judge said.According to the district attorney's office, Brazil cooperated in a federal investigation and testified against fellow criminals and disgraced Boston police detectives Kenneth Acerra and Walter Robinson, both of whom pled guilty. Brazil was given immunity in exchange for his testimony and served no time. He is currently collecting a pension.

A 70-year-old Massachusetts woman is undergoing a series of rabies shots after she was recently attacked by a raccoon as she was putting up Christmas lights at her house.Donna Sanginario, of Lancaster, said the attack happened at her Sterling Road home on Dec. 1. She estimated the raccoon that attacked her weighed about 45 pounds."I kept hearing this noise. I finally turn around and there is this raccoon," Sanginario said. "It was staring me right in the eye and it was huge."I went to back up and as soon as I did, he jumped right at me. It was mean and it would not stop screaming and I am screaming."Sanginario suffered deep bites, scratch marks and bruises on both of her arms. She said the raccoon latched on and would not let go for about five minutes."I kept going around in circles and once he got off, he just jumped right back at me," she said. "We are rolling around on the ground and I am screaming: 'Please, someone in this neighborhood help me!'"I somehow got him in a headlock and I just put him on my side, and I just kept bending over and squishing and squishing and squishing him. I heard bones break. My heart was racing so bad I thought I was going to have a heart attack."Animal control officers said that they are not putting out a public alert for the raccoon, saying that police searched for the animal but did not find it. Therefore, the raccoon could not be tested for rabies and there is no proof that it is rabid."As vicious as he was, in my opinion, he was rabid," Sanginario said.Shauna Terkanian, Sanginario's daughter, said she wanted to share her mother's story to raise awareness in the neighborhood."They didn't find the raccoon. I worry about all the kids in the neighborhood and the animals," Terkanian said.Sanginario said she has two more shots to go in her rabies vaccine treatment.Watch the video above for the full story.

A magical moment for a family happened at a Boston specialty hospital, as an infant girl was able to hear her parents for the first time.Brian and Emily Pray said that they noticed their daughter Luna, now 7 months old, was not responding to loud noises two days after her birth."Call it mother's intuition or whatever it may be, but I just had a feeling that she was deaf," Emily Pray said.Luna was diagnosed with profound hearing loss in both ears, as doctors determined that she was only able to detect vibrations. "We were mentally preparing that news and I think, ultimately, we just knew we were gonna give her everything we need to to give her the most successful path in life," Brian Pray said. The Prays decided to seek out help from the Mass Eye and Ear in Boston, and they then decided to get cochlear implants for Luna.Dr. Mandy Thiesen, an audiology manager at Mass Eye and Ear, said Luna was their youngest patient to ever receive cochlear implants. Luna was 6 months old at the time. "I was really pleased when they were able to be approved so quickly, because we all were aware that the sooner we're able to give Luna access to sound, the more kind of normal, typically, her speech and language skills will start to develop," Thiesen said.Luna had the implant inserted on each side of her head to take the place of her cochlea, which is the sensory organ for sound in the human hearing system. Then, came the big test when they activated the devices for the first time. "It was obviously sad to see her cry, but it was really exciting because those tears meant that she had heard something," Emily Pray said. Now that Luna has had her cochlear implants for a month, her tears have given way to curiosity. "You come close and she'll turn her head, whereas that never happened before," Emily Pray said. "Our hope is that she's just as successful as possible. We do joke around that she'll be the first deaf astronaut, so she can do whatever she wants."The Prays say that Luna is thriving with her new implants, which are just the first step. Thiesen said follow-up treatment is key, such as early intervention providers and speech therapy.
