<p>After Washington D.C. was snubbed from being one of the 11 U.S. cities to host a 2026 FIFA World Cup game, Mayor Muriel Bowser is hoping that the city can still participate in some shape or form.</p>
<p>Appearing on "Good Day DC" on Friday, Bowser said they are working with FIFA to try and have some fan events happen on the National Mall.</p>

<p>In April, D.C. announced they had joined forces with Baltimore to place a bid as one of the hosting cities for FIFA World Cup 2026 events.</p>
<p>But as the names of the 16 North American cities were being announced Thursday, people at an event hosted by Events DC organizers were disappointed, The Athletic reported.</p>
<p>FIFA said the U.S. cities that will host are Dallas, Atlanta, New York, Boston, Houston, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Miami, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Seattle.</p>
<p>Two Canadian cities, Toronto and Vancouver, and three Mexico cities, Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey, will also host games.</p>
<p>This will mark the second time the U.S. has hosted the World Cup. The first time occurred in 1994.</p>
<p>Mexico has hosted the event twice before, once in 1970 and 1986.</p>
<p>Canada has never hosted a men's World Cup match.</p>

Dozens of Amazon packages containing thousands of dollars worth of merchandise have arrived on Liz Geltman's doorstep. The problem? She hasn't ordered any of it. Geltman said since last fall, she's received more than 80 deliveries that aren't hers. "Well, that's the game," she told WUSA. "Everybody asks me how many Amazon boxes today?"The packages are addressed to Meng Xian Kuan, a person Geltman said she doesn't know. Geltman has called Amazon to tell them that the deliveries keep coming to the wrong house and has even tried to convince drivers to return the items."And they won't take it back on their trucks either," she said. "It's like, they just leave it. This is yours."Most of the mistaken deliveries contain children's bedding — probably $4,000 worth since this issue began, Geltman said. Since the packages started coming, she's made numerous trips to an Amazon return center near her to send them back. When WUSA contacted Amazon about Geltman's issue, company officials agreed to start picking up the packages mistakenly delivered to her home and work on putting an end to this issue.

Jackson's staff took him to Howard University Hospital for various tests including a CT scan which came back normal. Watkins said Jackson would be kept at the hospital overnight for observation. "Family, he's resting comfortably and doing well," Santita Jackson, one of Jackson's daughters, posted on Twitter along with a story from The Grio about his fall. Jackson was attending a meeting with Howard President Wayne A.I. Frederick and the students, who were discussing their complaints about living conditions, according to Watkins.Jackson, who has Parkinson's disease, has already been hospitalized twice this year. He checked into a Chicago hospital for a breakthrough COVID-19 infection in August and required weeks of physical therapy as COVID affected his Parkinson's and his ability to walk and talk. He also underwent gallbladder surgery earlier in the year. Since being released from the hospital for COVID-19 treatment and physical therapy, Jackson has resumed an active travel and public speaking schedule.

<div>
<p>In 2016, President Obama used the Affordable Care Act to extend federal sex discrimination protections to people who identify as transgender.</p>
<p>But after a recent move by the Trump administration, some of those protections are now gone.</p>
<p>“What happened with the recent Trump administration ruling is that they basically said they were taking out that definition of sex discrimination and stated that it only applied to a person’s birth sex and couldn’t be applied to their gender identity and that they were no longer going to enforce any protections on the basis of gender identity," said Dr. Eliabeth Kvach. </p>
<p>“I think there’s something to be said, to think about what it’s like to be a person where the government says you don’t deserve to get accessible health care,” said Andrew Miller</p>
<p>Kvach and Miller both work at Denver Health in Colorado. Both call the recent rule change in DC a direct threat to the lives of transgender men and women.</p>
<p>“We have for example, 300 patients on our list to be able to receive vaginoplasty or gender confirming surgery for transgender women. And if you’re waiting years to get that surgery and then all of a sudden you’re worried about whether your insurance is going to cover it, that is enormously psychologically devastating to people,” said Kvach.</p>
<p>“I think that we’re already seeing that with cases coming out of hospitals denying care to transgender and non-binary folks," said Miller.</p>
<p>“I certainly think that it is dangerous to the lives of transgender and non-binary people,” said Kvach.</p>
<p>Denver Health is a LGBTQ+ Center of Excellence. For the health system it means any patient regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or other LGBTQ identification can receive treatment from any doctor for any health need</p>
<p>“LGBTQ health care isn’t specialty care, it’s just health care,” said Miller.</p>
<p>And while Miller is an employee at Denver Health, this is an extra important issue for him personally.</p>
<p>“I identify as a transgender man, and as I said before, my pronouns are he, him, his. I was born female, and at a certain point in my life, I recognized that being a woman didn’t fit for me, it was like I was living this false life,” said Miller</p>
<p>For him, and many trans people, being called the wrong name or the wrong pronoun isn’t just a simple mistake</p>
<p>“When we say hey, my name is Andrew, that’s what I go by, but you call me my birth name, what I hear is, 'It doesn’t matter that I told you my name.' You get to be more of an expert on me than I get to be on me. Why should I feel safe that you’re going to actually take care of me, if you can’t even call me my name?” Miller said.</p>
<p>For trans people around the country, this rule change might mean they could be denied hormone therapy or gender reassignment surgery. Procedures the transgender and health care providers who treat them, deem medically necessary.</p>
<p>“Medical treatment with hormones and with surgery help a person’s body align with who they are, with their gender identity,” Kvach said.</p>
<p>But it also means they have to be worried about being denied treatment for anything from a sore throat to life saving surgery.</p>
<p>“I’m from the south, I think about it all the time. What it would be like to go back home and have a medical emergency and not be able to get care. To be a person denied health care, and it’s terrifying,” said Miller.</p>
<p>And that increased anxiety can lead to bad health outcomes from avoiding preventative treatment to suicide.</p>
<p>A survey from the Trevor Project released this month shows that more than half of kids who identify as transgender and nonbinary have seriously considered suicide in the last 12 months.</p>
<p>While this rule change may be disheartening to many, institutions like Denver Health reaffirm their commitment to treating transgender people, like people</p>
<p>“I want folks to be able to go to the doctor and feel safe. I want my community to survive,” Miller said.<br /><iframe style="width: 100%; height: 500px; overflow: hidden;" src="https://form.jotform.com/92934342831156" width="100" height="“500”" scrolling="no"></iframe></p>

A large group of protesters gathered outside of Senate chambers Wednesday afternoon, breaching barricades at the Capitol building and outside Senate chambers in Washington, according to multiple reports. House and Senate debates have been placed on recess.By Wednesday afternoon, the U.S. Capitol was placed on lockdown, according to reports. This is a breaking news update. Check back for more details. Hundreds of law enforcement officers have mobilized across Washington as thousands of supporters who refuse to accept President Donald Trump's election loss have flocked to the nation's capital to protest when Congress gathers Wednesday afternoon to put the final stamp on President-elect Joe Biden's victory.Earlier in the day, Thousands of protesters gathered around the Washington Monument as the Elton John song "Tiny Dancer" played from loud speakers. The song was interrupted by an announcement telling people to leave behind backpacks, chairs and flagpoles so people could get through a security checkpoint. Hundreds of people carried flags. Some were American, some were Trump 2020 flags, among others. As part of their preparations, police posted signs around the district warning of the illegality of gun possession during protests as Trump tweeted his support for the protesters, saying, "Our Country has had enough, they won't take it anymore!" and "We Hear you (and love you) from the Oval Office."The Department of Homeland Security, which has staffed a "Virtual Situation Room" to help communication between different agencies, is "not currently tracking any active threats," spokesman Alexei Woltornist said.Trump traveled a short distance from the White House to the rally Wednesday morning. About 20 aides were outside awaiting Trump's departure, audibly shouting "Save our country" as he boarded his SUV. Trump gave a fist bump and appeared to blow a kiss.Trump addressed a large, tightly packed and largely maskless crowd of supporters on the Ellipse. His remarks got off to an inauspicious start as Trump's microphone appeared to be turned off as he began speaking."We can't hear you!" members of the audience were heard shouting on the video feed, though he appeared unaware and kept speaking.Moments later, audio was restored, and Trump was railing against the media.Trump's speech included calls for his vice president to step outside his constitutional bounds and overturn the results of the election."Hope Mike is going to do the right thing," Trump said at a rally on the Ellipse. "If Mike Pence does the right thing, we win the election."Pence released a letter he wrote to congress Wednesday just after noon, saying he wouldn't object to Biden's victory.A large glass barrier shielded Trump from the crowd, similar to when he spoke in front of the Lincoln Memorial on the Fourth of July 2019.Ahead of Trump's speech, Rudy Giuliani was addressing the rally on the Ellipse, baselessly repeating claims that voting machines were "crooked," and continuing to insist that Pence can do something today to change the election's outcome, which he does not have power to do. There is no evidence of widespread voter fraud."Let's have trial by combat!" Giuliani told the enthusiastic crowd.D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said the District is "absolutely prepared" for protests and announced that that at least ten people were arrested overnight related to the protests. At least one person was arrested for carrying an unlicensed gun and six people were charged with assault, including one for assaulting a police officer."We had several arrests related to that activity, but not a single one of them was a D.C. resident," she said.Authorities — a mix that includes local police, National Guard and federal uniformed officers — had already arrested several people ahead of demonstrations including the leader of the Proud Boys, a far-right group that Trump directly addressed during an autumn debate to "stand back and stand by."The Proud Boys' leader, Henry Tarrio, who goes by Enrique Tarrio, was released from police custody Tuesday on charges related to a protest last month and ordered by a local judge to stay out of DC as he awaits trial, including during this week's protests.

In a city still on edge after the Jan. 6 insurrection, law enforcement bore down in large numbers on the Capitol on Saturday over concerns that a rally in support of the jailed rioters would turn violent. It didn’t.The crowd was sparse and incidents were few. The only clear parallels to the riots more than eight months ago by supporters of Donald Trump were the false claims put forth by the rally organizers about the violence that January day when Congress met to certify the election of Joe Biden.Video above: Heavy security at Capitol riot supporters' rallyThe low turnout also called into question whether such rallies will have any staying power as the organizers attempt to tap into the rage of Jan. 6 without the presence of the former president.Law enforcement had prepared for a confrontation by erecting temporary fencing around the Capitol and deploying heavy dump trucks to ring the rally site. Local police departments and the U.S. National Guard were on standby. The security might have been unnecessary in the end, but the volatility around the lie that the 2020 election was stolen and the presence of extremists and white nationalist groups on Jan. 6 have made it impossible to predict how such events will go.U.S. Capitol Police said they received intelligence information leading up to the weekend that was similar to what was missed in January when law enforcement was only expecting a free speech protest and Trump supporters violently stormed the Capitol.Republican lawmakers, including those who had voted that day to challenge Biden’s election, avoided Saturday’s rally. Rally organizer Matt Braynard took elected officials to task for not backing up those now in jail and introduced candidates who are running for elected office.Counterprotesters stood by and jeered. Some held anti-Trump signs and one man who had confronted some of the pro-Trump protesters was quickly removed by police, who used bicycles to shield him from the crowd as they escorted him down the street. One person was arrested in the crowd for carrying a knife and a second man was arrested after someone reported to officers that they saw him carrying what appeared to be a handgun, police said. Two other people who police say were wanted in Texas – for a firearms charge and probation violation – were also arrested after being pulled over near the Capitol Saturday morning.Braynard, a former Trump campaign staffer, opened in calm and deliberate tones. He said the event was for the defendants held behind bars.On Jan.6, dozens of law enforcement officers were left bloodied and beaten as the crowd of pro-Trump rioters, some armed with pipes, bats and bear spray, charged into the Capitol, quickly overrunning the overwhelmed police force. One officer was beaten and shocked with a stun gun repeatedly until he had a heart attack; another was foaming at the mouth and screaming for help as rioters crushed him between two doors and bashed him in the head with his own weapon. The Associated Press reviewed hundreds of court and jail records for the Capitol riot defendants to uncover how many were being detained and found roughly 63 held in federal custody awaiting trial or sentencing hearings. At least 30 are jailed in Washington. The rest are locked up in facilities across the country. They have said they are being treated unfairly, and one defendant said he was beaten. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit has set standards for judges to apply in deciding whether to jail a Capitol riot defendant. A three-judge panel of the appeals court ruled in March that rioters accused of assaulting officers, breaking through windows, doors and barricades, or playing leadership roles in the attack were in “a different category of dangerousness” than those who merely cheered on the violence or entered the building after it was breached.Among the rally speakers was the girlfriend of Jonathan Mellis, who was seen on camera on Jan. 6 using a stick to attack officers who were outside the Capitol trying to hold back the mob, authorities said.Mellis was heard saying “knock their masks off,” and video shows him repeatedly striking and stabbing at officers with the stick, according to court documents. Authorities said in court documents that he appeared to be trying to hit the officers’ necks between their helmets and body armor, where they had no protection.Other defendants ordered locked up while they await trial include a man accused of dragging a police officer down steps to be beaten by an American flag and another man accused of leading a group of rioters up the Capitol steps to confront officers. But judges have released the vast majority of the defendants, including more than a dozen members and associates of the Oath Keepers, a far-right group, who are charged in perhaps the most serious case brought so far in the attack. Only three people charged in the Oath Keepers conspiracy case remain locked up after judges said they appeared to play a leadership role in the alleged conspiracy.Authorities have said the Oath Keepers prepared in the weeks leading up to Jan. 6 as if they were heading to war, came to Washington ready for violence and dressed that day in battle gear, wearing helmets and tactical vests.___Richer reported from Boston. Associated Press writers Michael Kunzelman, Mary Clare Jalonick, Jacques Billeaud, Lisa Mascaro, Amanda Seitz, Ashraf Khalil and Robert Burns contributed to this report.

<p>One person was arrested in the crowd for carrying a knife and a second man was arrested after someone reported to officers that they saw him carrying what appeared to be a handgun, police said. Two other people who police say were wanted in Texas – for a firearms charge and probation violation – were also arrested after being pulled over near the Capitol Saturday morning.</p>
<p>Braynard, a former Trump campaign staffer, opened in calm and deliberate tones. He said the event was for the defendants held behind bars.</p>
<p>On Jan.6, dozens of law enforcement officers were left bloodied and beaten as the crowd of pro-Trump rioters, some armed with pipes, bats and bear spray, charged into the Capitol, quickly overrunning the overwhelmed police force. One officer was beaten and shocked with a stun gun repeatedly until he had a heart attack; another was foaming at the mouth and screaming for help as rioters crushed him between two doors and bashed him in the head with his own weapon.</p>
<p>The Associated Press reviewed hundreds of court and jail records for the Capitol riot defendants to uncover how many were being detained and found roughly 63 held in federal custody awaiting trial or sentencing hearings.</p>
<p>At least 30 are jailed in Washington. The rest are locked up in facilities across the country. They have said they are being treated unfairly, and one defendant said he was beaten.</p>

<p>The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit has set standards for judges to apply in deciding whether to jail a Capitol riot defendant. A three-judge panel of the appeals court ruled in March that rioters accused of assaulting officers, breaking through windows, doors and barricades, or playing leadership roles in the attack were in “a different category of dangerousness” than those who merely cheered on the violence or entered the building after it was breached.</p>
<p>Among the rally speakers was the girlfriend of Jonathan Mellis, who was seen on camera on Jan. 6 using a stick to attack officers who were outside the Capitol trying to hold back the mob, authorities said.</p>
<p>Mellis was heard saying “knock their masks off,” and video shows him repeatedly striking and stabbing at officers with the stick, according to court documents. Authorities said in court documents that he appeared to be trying to hit the officers’ necks between their helmets and body armor, where they had no protection.</p>
<p>Other defendants ordered locked up while they await trial include a man accused of dragging a police officer down steps to be beaten by an American flag and another man accused of leading a group of rioters up the Capitol steps to confront officers.</p>
<p>But judges have released the vast majority of the defendants, including more than a dozen members and associates of the Oath Keepers, a far-right group, who are charged in perhaps the most serious case brought so far in the attack. Only three people charged in the Oath Keepers conspiracy case remain locked up after judges said they appeared to play a leadership role in the alleged conspiracy.</p>
<p>Authorities have said the Oath Keepers prepared in the weeks leading up to Jan. 6 as if they were heading to war, came to Washington ready for violence and dressed that day in battle gear, wearing helmets and tactical vests.</p>

<p>A man arrested Friday for <a class="Link" href="https://asnn.prod.ewscripps.psdops.com/news/national/man-arrested-near-capitol-after-trying-to-pass-security-checkpoint-with-fake-credential-handgun" target="_blank" rel="noopener">attempting to pass through a security checkpoint</a> near the U.S. Capitol with a gun and hundreds of rounds of ammo told local media outlets that he made an "honest mistake."</p>
<p>On Friday, Wesley Beeler of Front Royal, Virginia, was arrested at a security checkpoint in Washington after attempted to present "unauthorized" credentials to law enforcement. A search of Beeler's car later revealed he was in possession of a Glock handgun and an extended magazine that included 500 rounds of ammunition.</p>
<p>Beeler's car was also reportedly adorned with decals that read "Assault Life" and "If they come for your guns, give 'em your bullets first."</p>
<p>Beeler was reportedly charged with five crimes, including possessing a weapon and ammunition in Washington without proper registration.</p>
<p>The arrest came amid heightened security in D.C. following the Jan. 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol and ahead of Joe Biden's inauguration. Security officials fear more political violence could occur in D.C. in the days and weeks ahead.</p>
<p>However, in interviews with <a class="Link" href="https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/virginia-man-arrested-at-inauguration-checkpoint-with-unauthorized-credential-gun-police/2543951/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">WRC-TV</a> in Washington and the <a class="Link" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/beeler-arrest-inauguration-checkpoint/2021/01/16/8597db24-5834-11eb-a817-e5e7f8a406d6_story.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Washington Post</a>, Beeler claimed his actions weren't motivated by politics, and that he had made an "honest mistake."</p>
<p>Beeler told WRC that he has been working as a security guard in D.C., but got lost on his way to work on Friday. According to local outlets, many roads surrounding the Capitol are <a class="Link" href="https://dcist.com/story/21/01/13/inauguration-road-closures-dc-metro-schedule/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shut down</a> due to increased security.</p>
<p>When he ended up at the security checkpoint, he told WRC that he showed law enforcement the inauguration placard that had been given to him by his employer.</p>
<p>Law enforcement officials have not confirmed what credentials Beeler presented during the traffic stop and have only confirmed that his credentials were not issued by the government and were "unauthorized."</p>
<p>Beeler also told WRC that he forgot that his gun and the ammunition were in the car. While the gun wasn't registered in D.C., he claims he's licensed and registered to carry the gun in his home state of Virginia.</p>
<p>"I’m not a bad person. I'm not connected to any hate groups. I'm not there to harm anybody," Beeler told WRC.</p>
<p>According to WRC, Beeler was released from jail over the weekend and ordered to stay out of D.C. until his next court appearance in March.</p>

The head of the Ohio National Guard said he does not know why two soldiers were flagged by the FBI and pulled from their inaugural duties in Washington, D.C.On Tuesday night, the Ohio National Guard released the following statement:"The 25,000 National Guard members supporting the presidential inauguration have been subject to vetting by the FBI and provided additional threat awareness training through the D.C. National Guard. "We have been notified today that two Ohio National Guard Soldiers were flagged by the FBI. Out of an abundance of caution, the FBI removed them from the inaugural support mission."We do not have all the facts related to why the FBI flagged them, but it is our understanding at this time their removal was not due to criminal or threatening actions or activities."On Wednesday morning, hours before the inauguration of President Joe Biden, Major General John Harris, Ohio National Guard's adjutant general, gave insight after two soldiers flagged by the FBI general for the Ohio National Guard spoke to WLWT about the status and protocol of the two soldiers.Currently, Maj. Gen. Harris said he still does not know what caused the Guard members to be flagged.“We're waiting to get that information from the FBI and we'll determine what it is and we're conducting an investigation if necessary,” Maj. Gen. Harris said.Currently Maj. Gen. Harris is overseeing more than 1,500 currently activated and deployed to Columbus and Washington, D.C. He says the news of the two Guard members pulled from D.C. and sent home to Ohio is disconcerting but not shocking.“It's not necessarily for extremism,” Maj. Gen. Harris said. “It could be for, you know, financial problems. It could be for any number of things. And so, it's while it may seem shocking that folks were sent home from the National Capital Region because of this FBI flag, it's something that's not quite shocking to us because it's a part of the routine screening that we do to ensure that we keep the National Capital Region as safe as possible. And generally, when someone's flagged it turns out they're not really a threat. But it's out of an abundance of caution that the FBI will take those measures.”Maj. Gen. Harris says the two members flagged are still part of the Ohio National Guard. They are back in Ohio and are to report for duty and to await their next steps. He said each member deployed is screened internally but doesn’t know if more members of the ONG will be flagged.“Before these folks left on the mission, they were all briefed on the requirements, not to be members of extremist organizations and every one of them signed a statement that they are not. Again, they were vetted by the FBI, but we're constantly vigilant,” Maj. Gen. Harris said.WLWT asked Maj. Gen. Harris if he considers the flagging “a miss” by the ONG.“There are several moving parts to it so I won't say that it’s a miss,” Maj. Gen. Harris said. “Again I can't, I can't even tell you what it is.”Maj. Gen. Harris said he wants to assure other members of the ONG and public that they can “trust the National Guard.”“We work hard every day to ensure that we have that trust and if we find someone who can't live up to that value, it's our obligation and we work[...] to ensure that they're not in our rank,” Maj. Gen. Harris said.Maj. Gen. Harris said every member of the Guard will be rapid tested for COVID-19 upon returning to Ohio. That date has not yet been determined.

<p>INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — About 250 Indiana National Guard soldiers are expected to remain in Washington for about two more months after being sent there to help with security for President Joe Biden’s inauguration, officials said Tuesday.</p>
<p>Gov. Eric Holcomb <a class="Link" href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-inauguration-joe-biden-capitol-siege-indianapolis-washington-e23354797c50d68332dba4ef3a3b5c1a">authorized Indiana soldiers going to Washington</a> on Jan. 13 as more than <a class="Link" href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-inauguration-joe-biden-942a21360815130f8d2674469db3485c">25,000 troops from across the country</a> were dispatched there following the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.</p>
<p>More than 400 of the Indiana soldiers arrived back Monday night at the Guard’s Camp Atterbury after assisting with crowd and traffic control at the National Mall and near the White House, the Indiana Guard said. The soldiers remaining in Washington are scheduled to stay there until the end of March.</p>
<p>The Indiana soldiers were dispatched as <a class="Link" href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-donald-trump-indiana-indianapolis-e94bc837d2df98647eebc44428f630f1">Holcomb ordered the Statehouse complex closed</a> to the public for several days and legislative leaders canceled a week of meetings over police concerns about possible armed protests. No protests occurred surrounding Biden’s inauguration in Indianapolis.</p>

<p>A member of the Oath Keepers militia group charged with plotting with other extremists in the attack on the U.S. Capitol disavowed the anti-government group in a court hearing Friday, telling the judge she is “appalled” by her fellow Oath Keepers and “humiliated” by her arrest.</p>
<p>Jessica Watkins, one of nine members and associates of the far-right militia group charged with planning and coordinating with one another in the Jan. 6 siege, said she plans to cancel her Oath Keepers membership and has disbanded her local Ohio militia group. Watkins’ remarks came before the judge ordered her to remain behind bars while she awaits trial.</p>
<p>“I did it out of the love of my country but I think it’s time to let all of that go,” the Army veteran who ran an Ohio bar said during the hearing held via videoconference. “I’m not a criminally minded person... I am humiliated that I am even here today,” she added.</p>
<p>Judge Amit P. Mehta said Watkins was “not just a foot soldier” but actively involved in the planning and organizing of the attack and is too dangerous to be released. More than 250 people have been charged with federal crimes so far as a result of the Jan. 6 insurrection. The case against those affiliated with the Oath Keepers <a class="Link" href="https://apnews.com/article/capitol-siege-ohio-4ae41a1dc529fc96879c618b5b64126d">is the largest conspiracy case brought by prosecutors so far in the attack.</a></p>
<p>Watkins’ comments were surprising as defendants rarely, if ever, address the court during routine hearings over things like detention, because everything they say can be used against them by prosecutors.</p>
<p>Watkins, from Champaign County, Ohio, was part of the “stack” formation used by military infantrymen that was seen seen marching up the Capitol steps wearing tactical gear as the mob descended on the building, authorities say. Prosecutors say she and other Oath Keepers prepared in the weeks leading up to Jan. 6 as if they were going to war — recruiting others and training members — with the goal of blocking the certification of President Joe Biden’s victory.</p>
<p>Prosecutors said in court documents that Watkins communicated with other extremists during the attack over an encrypted channel on the walkie-talkie app Zello, saying: “We have a good group. We have about 30-40 of us. We are sticking together and sticking to the plan.” Prosecutors say an unknown man said on the channel: “You are executing citizen’s arrest. Arrest this assembly, we have probable cause for acts of treason, election fraud.”</p>
<p>Watkins’ renouncement of the Oath Keepers stands in sharp contrast to a message authorities say she sent after the attack to the leader of the Oath Keepers about a media report that portrayed the Oath Keepers negatively. Prosecutors say Watkins said: “If he has anything negative to say about us OATHKEEPERS, I’ll let you know so we can sue harder. Class action style. Oathkeepers are the [expletive]. They rescued cops, WE saved lives and did all the right things.”</p>
<p>Authorities have revealed chilling allegations in the case against the Oath Keepers, like a text message in which one man <a class="Link" href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-capitol-siege-politics-impeachments-7d2334edf7da4e2d50e4c6f1f386dec1">suggested getting a boat to ferry “heavy weapons” across the Potomac River.</a> Prosecutors say the Oath Keepers also discussed stationing a “quick reaction force” with weapons outside D.C. to assist.</p>
<p>On Friday, the judge pressed prosecutor Ahmed Baset over whether authorities have evidence that the Oath Keepers actually had a ”quick reaction force” set up outside the city on Jan. 6. Baset replied “that’s our understanding,” but didn’t provide anymore details before the judge brought the attorneys into a private virtual conference room to discuss the matter further.</p>

<p>Vice President Kamala Harris said that Evans made the ultimate sacrifice and the country is mourning. </p>

A pedestrian bridge collapsed over a highway in the nation's capital on Wednesday, sending five people to the hospital. Traffic was expected to be snarled for hours. The collapse happened just before noon along Interstate 295 in Northeast Washington. The bridge was found to be in poor condition at an inspection just a few months earlier.Investigators believe a truck struck the bridge, causing it to come loose and collapse, said Chris Geldart, the deputy mayor for public safety and justice. Several other vehicles were also involved in the collapse. He cautioned that the investigation was still in its preliminary stages. The five people taken to the hospital had non-life-threatening injuries, Geldart said.Chunks of concrete and other debris were strewn across the highway, and both directions of traffic were expected to be closed at least until late Friday. The bridge was lying atop the truck, which was leaking diesel fuel along the roadway, officials said.Mayor Muriel Bowser said Wednesday afternoon that there were no recent reports of structural concerns about the bridge. But Geldart said in a statement later Wednesday that the mayor's statement was incorrect. He said that the bridge was inspected in February and that a subsequent report issued May 25 rated the bridge as being in poor condition. He said the rating — a 4 on a scale of 9 to 0 — marked a threshold prompting a multiyear planning process to replace the bridge. The bridge had previously been rated a 5 — in fair condition — in April 2019.The Metropolitan Police Department is leading the crash investigation, Geldart said.

A U.S. Capitol Police officer who died after a man rammed his car into him and another officer at a barricade was identified as an 18-year veteran of the force.William "Billy" Evans joined the department in 2003 and was a member of its first responders unit. President Joe Biden said in a statement that he and his wife were heartbroken to learn of Friday's attack and expressed condolences to Evans' family. He directed flags at the White House to be lowered to half-staff. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi hailed Evans as a "martyr for our democracy." She and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer both spoke Friday with members of Evans' family. The death of the father of two is the latest moment of sorrow for a department after the loss of Brian Sicknick, who clashed with rioters during the Jan. 6 insurrection and died a day later, and Howard Liebengood, who committed suicide days after that."He just always had a smile on his face, helping out," Chris Wystepek told WJLA-TV. He had just commented on his college friend's social media page the day before Evans was killed."All of a sudden, next day, it's like, that's it. He's gone," Wystepek said.Video shows the driver of the crashed car emerging with a knife in his hand and starting to run at the pair of officers, Capitol Police acting Chief Yogananda Pittman told reporters. Authorities shot the suspect, identified by law enforcement officials as 25-year-old Noah Green. He died at a hospital.Investigators were digging into his background and examining whether he had any history of mental health problems as they tried to discern a motive. They were working to obtain warrants to access his online accounts."Our thoughts and prayer are with the Officer who passed and his family," Larry Cosme, national president of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, said in a statement. "He gave his life in dedication to protecting our nation's democracy and should be treated as a national hero. Our prayers also remain with the second officer battling injuries sustained in the attack. We hope for a swift recovery and commend both officers for their courageous actions."
