one of the big topics today in the market is without *** doubt walmart and its guidance cut, that it announced last night. It's simply reverberating through retail land. Now, remember When we cut Walmart back in early June, we were concerned about what we call the bloated excess inventories, that it had candidly *** record level of inventory for the company over the last 20 years, and what the implications could be for its margins. And that's exactly what was confirmed last night with the guidance cut out of Walmart, Walmart also said though too, that it's seeing consumers kind of shift their space around really focusing on necessities and food, not discretionary items. Again, another confirming data point for us and why we continue to like Costco, remember Costco doesn't have *** lot of apparel compared to, say walmart, that's really focused on more necessary items and in particular food. So we continue to see walmart's comments as strength as walmart's com reverberate through. Again, overall retail land, we're going to continue to keep our eyes on Costco if the shares continue to weaken, it could be an opportunity to snap them up and build out our position. Now and again, we why do we like Costco compared to other retailers because of its differentiated membership business model? With regard to walmart, even though we once owned it, we are going to continue to stay on the sidelines with that name

Walmart is laying off about 200 corporate employees, a person familiar with the matter told CNN, in a move that comes days after the retail giant issued a rare profit warning. In a statement, Walmart confirmed it is "updating our structure and evolving select roles to provide clarity and better position the company for a strong future."Walmart, the largest U.S. retailer, noted it is still investing and adding jobs in key areas such as e-commerce, advertising and supply chain.A person familiar with the matter told CNN the layoffs began this week. The job cuts come after Walmart last week cut its profit outlook for the second quarter and the remainder of the year, warning that high food and fuel costs have impacted how customers spend. A West Chester man is charged with multiple counts of voyeurism in three separate cases in Butler and Hamilton counties.Marty Worley, 21, is accused of spying on women and photographing them inside local department stores. The latest criminal charge stems from an incident inside Target at the Voice of America shopping center on June 2.A store employee called 911."I have a peeping Tom in the store right now," the caller said. "He's very blatant about it. He went up to this one woman seven times. He just took pictures of her right next to a child."The caller said the man was photographing women and girls' backsides and up their skirts."He's just making laps. He's going around to another set of definitely minor girls. He's hunting. I mean, literally, I'm watching him hunt for girls right now. He's going to the makeup department where there's a bunch of little girls," the caller said. While on the phone with a dispatcher, the employee said he watched Worley take inappropriate photos of a dozen customers. The employee said he couldn't take it anymore and ended up confronting Worley before police arrived."I can't let this happen in front of me anymore," the caller said.According to a West Chester Township police report, two of the victims were 17 years old."That's disgusting and blows my mind," said Melissa Juneau, a Target shopper. Another customer, Alauna Patten, said, "It's creepy all the way around, but girls, 17-year-olds, they don't know about the real world yet and probably never would have expected that." This week, Worley was charged with voyeurism for that incident.WLWT confirmed he's also been charged in two other similar cases. On Jan. 17, West Chester police said Worley spied on a woman while she was trying on clothes in the dressing room at the Walmart on Cincinnati-Dayton Road for the "purpose of sexual arousal or gratification."Three days after that, in Hamilton County, deputies said Worley recorded a woman in the dressing room at the Symmes Township Kohls. WLWT tracked down Worley on Thursday."I don't want to talk to no news," he said.He referred us to his attorney, Mike Allen. Allen said because the three cases are pending in court, it was too soon to discuss the case.

Multiple people are dead and others are wounded after a shooting at a Virginia Walmart on Tuesday night, police said.Officers responded to a report of a shooting at the Walmart on Sam's Circle around 10:15 p.m. and as soon as they arrived they found evidence of a shooting, Chesapeake police spokesman Leo Kosinski said in a briefing.Over 35 to 40 minutes, officers found multiple dead people and injured people in the store and put rescue and tactical teams together to go inside and provide life-saving measures, he said.Police believe there was one shooter, who is dead, he said. They believe that the shooting had stopped when police arrived, Kosinski said. He did not have a number of dead, but said it was "less than 10, right now."The Virginia shooting comes three days after a gunman opened fire at a gay nightclub in Colorado, killing five people and wounding 17. That shooter was arrested after patrons at the club tackled him and beat him. The shootings come in a year when the country was shaken by the deaths of 21 in a school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.Tuesday's shooting also brought back memories of another shooting at a Walmart in 2019, when a gunman police say was targeting Mexicans opened fire at a store in El Paso and killed 22 people. Walmart didn't have a security guard on duty that day.Chesapeake police tweeted that a family reunification site has been set up at the Chesapeake Conference Center. This site is only for immediate family members or the emergency contact of those who may have been in the building, the tweet said.Chesapeake is about 7 miles (11 kilometers) south of Norfolk. This is a developing story and will be updated.

“That's all that we knew. That he had been shot,” said Deborah Hayslett, whose brother was being treated at a hospital after he was shot during a mass shooting at a Walmart in Chesapeake, Virginia on Tuesday night.

What happened in Virginia and at the LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado several days prior, both are called a “mass shooting” because they fit a specific definition. What exactly does that entail, though?

“That's a really interesting question because it's very much debated in the academic literature,” said Jaclyn Schildkraut, an associate professor of criminal justice at the State University of New York at Oswego and co-editor of the Journal of Mass Violence Research. “Regardless of the definition that you use, all of our different data sources are showing the same thing, and that is an upward trend.”

According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have now been 606 mass shootings in America so far in 2022. Those are defined as when four or more people are injured or killed, not including the shooter.

There have also been 36 mass murders, defined as when more than four people were killed, not including the perpetrator.

“But it doesn't really take into account any sort of the contextual factors,” Schildkraut said. “So, as a result, you have things like gang violence and then familicides, or family shootings, kind of lumped in with what happened in Walmart last night, even though they're very different types of events.”

Daniel Webster studies gun violence and mass shootings as co-director of the Center for Gun Violence Solutions at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

“We tend to really compartmentalize the problem of gun violence,” he said, “and, the truth is, there's a lot of similarities across the different forms of gun violence.”

Webster said when it comes to mass shootings, in particular, there are commonalities when it comes to how they unfold.

“Some of the basics are remarkably consistent,” Webster said. “It's generally a male phenomenon. Again, it's easy access to firearms and acting on some sense of grievance.”

Experts say that makes the sheer number of mass shootings in the country, a distinctly American phenomenon.

“We have not seen historic rises in gun violence or mass shootings in other countries,” Webster said. “We are unique, in not a good way.”

Schildkraut, who is also the interim executive director of the Regional Gun Violence Research Consortium at the Rockefeller Institute, said there are things that can be done to minimize the number of mass shootings.

“There is a lot of planning, a lot of premeditation that goes into them, and so, these are not individuals who wake up and snap. These are individuals who invest a lot of time into preparing for what they're intending to do,” she said. “We have to work to be more proactive to prevent gun violence and less reactive. And so, I think kind of keeping those things in mind is really important, as we sort of struggle with, ‘How do we go to places like Walmart to pick up our Thanksgiving dinner and feel unsafe?’”

It is a question that the country is grappling with on this most American of holidays.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (AP) — The Walmart supervisor who fatally shot six co-workers at a store in Virginia bought the gun just hours before the killings and left a note on his phone accusing colleagues of mocking him, authorities said Friday.

“Sorry everyone but I did not plan this I promise things just fell in place like I was led by the Satan,” Andre Bing wrote on a note that was left on his phone, the Chesapeake Police Department said Friday.

Police said the 9 mm handgun used in the Tuesday night shooting was legally purchased that morning and that Bing had no criminal record. They released a copy of the note found on his phone that appeared to redact the names of specific people he mentioned.

It was not clear when the note was written, but in it Bing claimed he was harassed and said he was pushed to the brink by a perception his phone was hacked.

He wrote, “My only wish would have been to start over from scratch and that my parents would have paid closer attention to my social deficits.” Bing died at the scene of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Coworkers of Bing who survived the shooting said he was difficult and known for being hostile with employees. One survivor said Bing seemed to target people and fired at some victims after they were already hit.

Jessica Wilczewski said workers were gathered in a store break room to begin their overnight shift late Tuesday when Bing, a team leader, entered and opened fire. While another witness has described Bing as shooting wildly, Wilczewski said she observed him target certain people.

“The way he was acting — he was going hunting," Wilczewski told The Associated Press on Thursday. "The way he was looking at people’s faces and the way he did what he did, he was picking people out.”

She said she observed him shoot at people who were already on the ground.

“What I do know is that he made sure who he wanted dead, was dead,” she said. “He went back and shot dead bodies that were already dead. To make sure.”

Wilczewski said she had only worked at the store for five days and didn't know with whom Bing got along or had problems. She said being a new employee may have been the reason she was spared.

She said that after the shooting started, a co-worker sitting next to her pulled her under the table to hide. She said that at one point, Bing told her to get out from under the table. But when he saw who she was, he told her, “Jessie, go home.” She said she slowly got up and then ran out of the store.

Former coworkers and residents of Chesapeake, a city of about 250,000 people near Virginia's coast, have been struggling to make sense of the rampage.

Bing's death note rambles at times through 11 paragraphs, with references to nontraditional cancer treatments and songwriting. He says people unfairly compared him to serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, and wrote: “I would have never killed anyone who entered my home.”

And he longs for a wife but says he didn't deserve one.

Some who worked with Bing, 31, said he had a reputation for being an aggressive, if not hostile, supervisor who once admitted to having “anger issues.” But he also could make people laugh and seemed to be dealing with the typical stresses at work that many people endure.

“I don’t think he had many people to fall back on in his personal life,” said Nathan Sinclair, who worked at the Walmart for nearly a year before leaving earlier this month.

During chats among coworkers, “We would be like ‘work is consuming my life.’ And (Bing) would be like, ‘Yeah, I don’t have a social life anyway,’” Sinclair recalled Thursday.

Sinclair said he and Bing did not get along. Bing was known for being “verbally hostile” to employees and wasn’t particularly well-liked. But Sinclair also said there were times when Bing was made fun of and not necessarily treated fairly.

Police have identified the victims as Brian Pendleton, 38; Kellie Pyle, 52; Lorenzo Gamble, 43; Randy Blevins, 70, and Fernando Chavez-Barron, 16, who were all from Chesapeake; and Tyneka Johnson, 22, of nearby Portsmouth. Chavez-Barron's name was released Friday; it had been withheld previously because of his age.

A Walmart spokesperson confirmed in an email that all of the victims worked for the company.

Two others who were shot remained hospitalized, police said Friday. One is still in critical condition, and the other is in fair to improving condition.

Another Walmart employee, Briana Tyler, has said Bing appeared to fire at random.

“He was just shooting all throughout the room. It didn’t matter who he hit,” Tyler told the AP Wednesday.

Six people also were wounded in the shooting, which happened just after 10 p.m. as shoppers were stocking up ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. Police said they believe about 50 people were in the store at the time.

Bing was identified as an overnight team leader who had been a Walmart employee since 2010. Police said he had one handgun and several magazines of ammunition.

Tyler said the overnight stocking team of 15 to 20 people had just gathered in the break room to go over the morning plan. Another team leader had begun speaking when Bing entered the room and opened fire, Tyler and Wiczewski said.

Tyler, who started working at Walmart two months ago and had worked with Bing just a night earlier, said she never had a negative encounter with him, but others told her he was “the manager to look out for.” She said Bing had a history of writing up people for no reason.

The attack was the second major shooting in Virginia this month. Three University of Virginia football players were fatally shot on a bus Nov. 13 as they returned from a field trip. Two other students were wounded.

The Walmart shooting also comes days after a person opened fire at a gay nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado — killing five and wounding 17. Tuesday night’s shooting brought back memories of another attack at a Walmart in 2019, when a gunman killed 23 at a store in El Paso, Texas.

Also on Friday, a person suffered injuries not considered life-threatening after being shot at a Walmart in Lumberton, North Carolina, police said. Investigators described it as an isolated altercation between two people who knew each other.

Wilczewski, who survived Tuesday's shooting in Virginia, said she tried but could not bring herself to visit a memorial in the store's parking lot Wednesday.

“I wrote a letter and I wanted to put it out there,” she said. “I wrote to the ones I watched die. And I said that I'm sorry I wasn't louder. I'm sorry you couldn't feel my touch. But you weren't alone.”

Banana Boat is expanding its recall of Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 due to the presence of benzene, which is classified as a human carcinogen.

Edgewell Personal Care Company says an additional batch of the sunscreen was added to the recall announcement from July.

The products all feature the same UPC code: 0-79656-04041-8. However, they have different lot codes and expiration dates.

Lot Code Expiration Date
20016AF Dec. 2022
20084BF Feb. 2023
21139AF April 2024
20301CF Sept. 2023

The company says the sunscreen was distributed nationwide and sold at various retailers and online. It adds that it has notified retailers to pull the product from their shelves.

Benzene is not an ingredient in Bobana Boat products, according to Edgewell Personal Care Company. However, the company says "a review showed that unexpected levels of benzene came from the propellant that sprays the product out of the can."

The Centers for Disease Control notes that benzene can be found in the environment due to a variety of factors, including tobacco smoke, vehicle exhaust and industrial emissions.

The agency warns that long-term exposure to benzene can affect the immune system and cause cancer.

Consumers are asked to discard the recalled sunscreen. They can contact Edgewell Personal Care at 1-888-686-3988 for information about how to be reimbursed.

Walmart's chief merchandising officer for its US operations is stepping down from the job as the retailer faces a tougher year ahead, an internal memo shared to US associates Friday said.Charles Redfield, whose career at Walmart spanned 32 years, will transition on May 1 and remain in an advisory role. In a memo viewed by CNN Business, Walmart U.S. CEO John Furner said Redfield wants to spend more time with his family.Redfield held his position at the retailer for a little more than a year, beginning in January 2022.The leadership shakeup comes after America's largest retailer warned it is facing a more challenging year ahead and will approach 2023 with caution.Despite a strong holiday season, Walmart forecasted slower sales and profit growth in February.
Employees at Walmart who are vaccinated are no longer required to wear a mask at work.

Walmart updated its COVID-19 policy for associates Friday.

In a memo obtained by CNN, the company announced that vaccinated workers will only need to wear a mask if it is required by the state or local government.

Workers who are not vaccinated and those who work in clinical care settings, including pharmacies, will be required to continue wearing face masks.

In addition to these policies, Walmart is also making changes to its sick pay policy.

Previously, associates received extra paid time off beyond sick leave if they tested positive for COVID-19.

Walmart is getting rid of this policy in March, except in places where it is required by the state or local government.

In addition, the retailer will no longer conduct daily health screenings in most places.

Screenings will continue in California, New York and Virginia, where they are required.

Policy changes at Walmart are now in effect.

Sixteen-year-old Kenzie Heitger was on her lunch break inside a Walmart in Pennsylvania last month when she noticed a commotion at the front of the store. Heitger said when she spotted her co-worker, 18-year-old Hai-Lei Rugg, sitting on the bag rotator at register 6, unconscious, she knew what she had to do."We laid Hai-Lei on the ground, put a coat underneath her head so her head was comforted," Heitger said. "She had no pulse, no breathing."Heitger said Rugg was also sweating, so a customer offered the cold vegetables from her cart to cool Rugg and then Heitger began CPR.Heitger said after 23 compressions, Rugg gasped."She just like opened her eyes real big and took a really deep breath," Heitger said. "I was like oh my gosh thank goodness, thank goodness this worked. I've never done CPR before, it was my first time and it was scary."Rugg remembers taking that breath."I came back with a big gasp of air and my eyes were darting all over the place," Rugg said. Before that moment, she said she only remembers realizing something was wrong."I started holding on to the register and I'm like shaking real bad trying not to fall down and one of the other co-workers comes and tells me to sit on the bag rotator," Rugg said. "When I sit on the bag rotator, I am out like a light."Rugg said she was taken to the hospital by ambulance and released later that night.Although she said she feels fine, Rugg is not yet cleared to go back to work, but she is grateful that because of Heitger, she likely will be. "If Kenzie wasn't there I don't know what would have happened," Rugg said. "I might not have woke up."Walmart honored Heitger, inside the store, for saving her co-worker's life. Both Heitger and Rugg are planning careers in the medical field, and they hope their story will help other teens realize the importance of CPR.
Sixteen-year-old Kenzie Heitger was on her lunch break inside a Walmart in Pennsylvania last month when she noticed a commotion at the front of the store.

Heitger said when she spotted her co-worker, 18-year-old Hai-Lei Rugg, sitting on the bag rotator at register 6, unconscious, she knew what she had to do.

"We laid Hai-Lei on the ground, put a coat underneath her head so her head was comforted," Heitger said. "She had no pulse, no breathing."

Heitger said Rugg was also sweating, so a customer offered the cold vegetables from her cart to cool Rugg and then Heitger began CPR.

Heitger said after 23 compressions, Rugg gasped.

"She just like opened her eyes real big and took a really deep breath," Heitger said. "I was like oh my gosh thank goodness, thank goodness this worked. I've never done CPR before, it was my first time and it was scary."

Rugg remembers taking that breath.

Related video above: The president's options are limited to help gas prices Gas prices are skyrocketing, and Americans want to save at the pump. That plays right into the hands of Costco, BJ's Wholesale Club and Sam's Club. The national gas price average jumped to $3.41 a gallon Friday, according to AAA, 61% higher than the average at the same time last year. The Biden administration has called for an investigation into whether oil and gas companies acted illegally to push up prices. The spike has pushed more shoppers to rely on these chains to fill up their tanks, say the companies, retail analysts and fuel experts. Gas prices at warehouse clubs can be as much as 30 cents lower than traditional gas stations, and the chains offer members coupons to use in their stores when they fill up. Gasoline sales at the warehouse clubs are an important part of their business and draw customers inside."People are seeking out the clubs because of the gas," said Michael Baker, a retail analyst at D.A. Davidson. "It's U.S. consumers' nature to go out of their way for lower gas prices."Costco, for example, is typically 20 cents a gallon below the market average, according to Tom Kloza, the global head of energy analysis at IHS Markit's Oil Price Information Service. BJ's says it's 10 cents below average. These companies are "winners when gasoline prices go skyward," said Kloza.Costco, Sam's Club and BJ's want you to fill up your tank in their parking lots and then go stock up on giant jugs of ketchup, boxes of snacks and clothing. (And why not buy a flat-screen TV or a new couch while you're at it?) Their gas stations give these warehouse stores an advantage that many retail competitors can't match.Gas makes up around 10%, $20 billion annually, of Costco's overall sales and 9% of BJ's. Walmart, which owns Sam's Club, does not disclose what portion of its sales come from gas.Gas is a notoriously low-margin business, but retailers can make money from selling huge volumes of gas -- even while charging much less than independent gas stations, said Kloza, adding that it's not unusual for sales at a Costco location to reach up to 1 million gallons a month compared to an average of 80,000 gallons a month at typical gas stations.Despite their big-brand names, the vast majority of Exxon, Chevron, BP and Shell gas stations are independently owned, so they aren't able to make a volume play like wholesalers do. Although wholesalers are able to make a profit on gas, they're not making much: Costco, for example, reported that gasoline has a lower profit margin than the rest of its business. Rising gas prices typically help Costco's sales, but hurt its profits."When there are inflationary pressures and prices are going up, people look to save on gas," said Richard Galanti, Costco's chief financial officer. For every 100 people who come to Costco to fill up on gas, more than half go shop inside afterwards, he added.Gas sales at BJ's Wholesale Club jumped 20% during its most recent quarter ending Oct. 30 compared with the same time a year ago.BJ's is growing market share in gasoline "in leaps and bounds," CEO Robert Eddy said on a call with analysts Thursday. When gas prices hit over $3 a gallon, "members love us" and shift their gas spending to the club.Gas discounts are a tool Walmart uses to encourage customers to sign up for Walmart+ memberships, which also offer free shipping and discounts on prescriptions.Walmart said on Tuesday that it's actively trying to keep gas prices down to attract customers worried about how much they're paying at the pump, especially as federal stimulus benefits wane."Gas prices are a concern... They're up dramatically versus a year ago," Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said on an earnings call. "The customers had money . And at some point, that's going to come to an end."

With his laces tied tightly, Randy Bowling said he's ready to walk to work if he has to.The nearly four-mile trek each way — from his apartment in Hamilton to Walmart in Fairfield Township — isn't ideal for the 50-year-old, who is also disabled. Bowling suffered a traumatic brain injury when he was 16.That's one of the reasons he bought a $157 bicycle a few months ago."It's the first bike I ever bought myself," Bowling said. He was proud of it. Now, it's gone.It was stolen from outside Party Mart Express in Hamilton Saturday night.Store security video shows Bowling walking his bike close to the front doors after his shift at Walmart. He's in the East Avenue store for less than a minute before a man rides up on another bike, grabs Bowling's bicycle and rides off with it.Bowling walks out in disbelief."He's made my life harder," Bowling said. Bowling lives alone at the Serve City apartments. He said he needs his job to pay bills, and the bus isn't always an option."When we had heard, it just broke our hearts. Our residents struggle with so many other life issues, to have something like this happen is a real challenge," said David Hood, executive director of Serve City. Neighbor Brenda Stevens called what happened unacceptable in her neighborhood."It's just aggravating. I don't know why people do it. It's selfish," Stevens said.Other neighbors have expressed frustration and support."There's a lot of people that care. If I had a bike, I'd give it to him," said neighbor Andrew Yeager. Bowling said even though he should be angry, he'd rather talk to the guy who snatched his bike and help him get a job.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Walmart is recalling bottles of an aromatherapy room spray due to the possible presence of a rare and dangerous type of bacteria that’s been linked to two deaths.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced Friday that the company is recalled about 3,900 bottles of “Better Homes and Gardens-branded- Essential Oil Infused Aromatherapy Room Spray with Gemstones” in six different scents.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says laboratory tests identified the bacteria Burkholderia pseudomallei in one of the affected bottles. The bacteria is known to cause melioidosis.

The spray was found in the home of a Georgia resident who became ill with melioidosis in late July, according to the CDC.

The CDC has been investigating a cluster of four cases of melioidosis in the country. Officials say four cases have been reported in Kansas, Minnesota, Texas, and Georgia. Two of those people died and one of them was a child.

The CDC says it’s continuing testing to see if the genetic fingerprint of the bacteria in the bottle from Georgia matches those of the bacteria identified in the four patients.

The aromatherapy room spray was sold at about 55 Walmart stores nationwide and online at Walmart.com from Feb. 2021 through Oct. 2021 for about $4.

“Better Homes and Gardens Aromatherapy,” is printed on the label on the front of the 5-ounce glass bottle. The aromatherapy was sold with a pump spray nozzle in the following scents and product numbers:

84140411420 Better Homes and Gardens (BHG) Gem Room Spray Lavender & Chamomile

84140411421 Better Homes and Gardens (BHG) Gem Room Spray Lemon and Mandarin

84140411422 Better Homes and Gardens (BHG) Gem Room Spray Lavender

84140411423 Better Homes and Gardens (BHG) Gem Room Spray Peppermint

84140411424 Better Homes and Gardens (BHG) Gem Room Spray Lime & Eucalyptus

84140411425 Better Homes and Gardens (BHG) Gem Room Spray Sandalwood and Vanilla

Walmart has stopped the sale of the product, which was made in India.

Consumers who have purchased one of these products are urged to do the following:

Stop using this product immediately. Do not open the bottle. Do not attempt to throw away or dispose of the bottle.

Double bag the bottle in clean, clear zip-top resealable bags and place in a small cardboard box. Return the bagged and boxed product to a Walmart store.

Wash sheets or linens that the product may have been sprayed on using normal laundry detergent and dry completely in a hot dryer, bleach can be used if desired.

Wipe down counters and surfaces that might have been exposed to the spray with an undiluted disinfectant cleaner.

Minimize handling of the product and wash hands thoroughly after handling the bottle or linens. Wash hands thoroughly after removing gloves.

If you have used the product within the last 21 days and experience fever or other symptoms, seek medical care and tell your doctor about the product exposure. Your doctor may recommend that you get antibiotics (post-exposure prophylaxis) to prevent infection.

The CDC says melioidosis is a rare but serious disease in the U.S., with about 12 cases reported annually. It causes a wide range of symptoms that can be confused with other common illnesses, like flu or a cold. Person-to-person spread is extremely rare.

Amazon plans to add 150,000 temporary workers in the United States for the holiday shopping rush, a 50% increase from the company's holiday hiring push a year ago.Amazon, like many retailers and logistics companies, is facing challenges hiring workers and is raising pay, dangling bonuses, and expanding benefits in response to the pressures. The company's holiday jobs this year have an average starting pay of $18 an hour — higher than Amazon's $15 minimum wage— sign-on bonuses up to $3,000 and an additional $3 an hour in pay for certain shifts in some locations, Amazon said in an announcement Monday.Amazon's temporary positions for the holidays include picking, scanning and packing items at warehouses and loading boxes onto trucks.Amazon's business has surged during the pandemic as many shoppers, spending more time at home, increased their online purchases. Amazon has added more than 450,000 workers in the United States since the beginning of the pandemic and now has upwards of 950,000 U.S. workers."It's a very competitive labor market out there. And certainly, the biggest contributor to inflationary pressures that we're seeing in the business," Brian Olsavsky, Amazon's chief financial officer, said in July. "We're spending a lot of money on signing and incentives."Amazon last month said it planned to hire 125,000 permanent workers ahead of the holidays.Other chains are adding temporary and permanent workers at stores and warehouses to meet demand from holiday shoppers.Walmart plans to hire around 150,000 employees, most of them in permanent, full-time positions, while Target is aiming to bring on 100,000 seasonal workers and 30,000 permanent supply chain employees.UPS, Kohl's, Nordstrom, Macy's and others are also adding workers for the holidays. Some are offering sign-on bonuses this year for new hires and other incentives. There are signs, however, that interest in holiday work for some has dwindled. The share of job seeker searches for seasonal work during the seven days ending Sept. 22 was down 1.5% compared with the same time last year and 39% from 2019, jobs site Indeed said in a report last month.

He's the only director on Walmart's 12-member board appointed since the police murder of George Floyd on May 25, 2020, which motivated Walmart's leaders to create a $100 million center on racial equity program less than two weeks later. Walmart President and CEO Doug McMillon took the issue of racial inequality head on during one of the company's virtual employee meetings more than a year ago."The murder of George Floyd is tragic, painful, and unacceptable," McMillon told Walmart's global employees in June 2020. "Words and feelings matter, but they are not enough. More action is required. We will find new ways to accelerate the desired changes inside our company and we will also find the ways that our business can influence real change in our country."Walmart is the nation's largest private employer by far, with more than 2 million employees on its global payroll, 1.5 million of them in the United States alone, according to the company's latest diversity, equity and inclusion report. Amazon is a distant second, with 798,000 employees as recently as 2019, according to Fortune.McMillon said in June 2020 that roughly 340,000 of Walmart's employees are Black. The company's latest report confirms that more than 20% of its employees were Black as recently as July. They also make up the largest non-White employee segment of Walmart's workforce. African Americans made up 11.9% of the U.S. population in 2020, according to the latest U.S. Census.Yet only about 9% of Walmart's corporate officers are African American, the company's latest demographic data confirms. The company says that's a 2.28% increase from this time last year.Black members of Walmart's executive leadership team include executive vice president of neighborhood markets Kelvin L. Buncum, senior vice president and chief global culture, diversity, equity & inclusion officer Ben Hasan and Dr. Cheryl Pegus, the company's executive vice president of health & wellness.Dacona Smith, executive vice president and chief operating officer for Walmart U.S., became the latest African American to join Walmart's executive leadership team in February 2020. He and Walmart U.S. executive vice president Latriece Watkins, who oversees the company's consumables business operations, round out the five Black Walmart executive managers out of 48 executive level positions (roughly 10%), according to its leadership web page.Latinos make up nearly 18% of Walmart's employee population, but just 5.5% of the company's officers, according to the report. Asian people, who represent more than 4% of the retailer's employees, comprise more than 10% of its managers and 9% of its officers. White people make up more than 53% of Walmart's workforce and represent more than 63% of its managers and 74% of its officers. The report also says people of color make up more than 46% of Walmart's workforce, but the company's website shows Black and Brown Americans comprise only about 16.7% of Walmart's 12-member board of directors.NBCUniversal News Group Chairman Cesar Conde is the only Latin American on Walmart's board of directors. He and Morgan Stanley Vice Chair of Wealth Management Carla A. Lewis, who is Black, are the only people of color on Walmart's board.People of color saw a slight uptick in promotions from hourly employees to management positions, which increased more than two percentage points between January and July, according to Walmart's 2020 end-of-year DEI report. In its most recent DEI report, Walmart pointed out marginal gains women have made at the officer level, as well as the May launch of its Accessibility Center of Excellence, which is designed to advance equity and inclusion for people with disabilities."Although we have made progress, we still have more work to do," the company told CNN Business Friday via email.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Walmart announced Friday that its U.S. stores will be closed on Thanksgiving later this year.

The big-box store said in a press release that the stores will be closed on the holiday as a “thank you” to its associates for their hard work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Walmart stores will operate regular posted hours on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and information about store hours for Black Friday will be announced on a later date.

“Closing our stores on Thanksgiving Day is one way we’re saying ‘thank you’ to our teams for their dedication and hard work this year. We hope everyone will take the opportunity to be with their loved ones during what’s always a special time,” said Dacona Smith, executive vice president and chief operating officer for Walmart U.S. in a statement.

It may seem early for Walmart to announce its plans, but closing on Thanksgiving seems to be a growing trend.

Target, one of Walmart’s largest competitors, actually announced back in January that it wouldn’t be open on Thanksgiving 2021.

Both of the retailers were closed on the holiday last year, as were several other stores as COVID-19 continued to devastate the country.

Target said the response to being closed on the holiday in 2020 was so positive that it led the company to do it again.

At the beginning of the pandemic, the legal cannabis industry was disrupted, but by the end of 2020, the industry saw record sales of $17.5 billion. This is a 46% increase in sales from 2019. Most of the sales came from adult use markets like colorado in Oregon, according to Forbes. These two states sold over $3.3 billion combined. A cannabis producer in las Vegas told the new york times that sales in Nevada could top one billion in 2021 restrictions forced many businesses to find different ways to reach consumers. Shortly after officials announced that licensed dispensaries in Nevada could open back up, cars were lined up for blocks waiting for curbside pickup in massachusetts, a business in a county with little Internet access, hired more people and invested in more headsets to handle the increase in orders, according to business insider. While the revenue in 2020 was great, many business owners hope to never have to relive that year again because restrictions made it really difficult to manage staff and logistics

When I'm not designing, I'm busy being mom. - I'm a mom too, so I'm excited to hear that. Young, tell us a bit about yourself before we start chatting. - So, my name is Young Huh, I'm an interior designer in New York. We do projects across the country and around the world. Our work spans from hospitality projects to residential projects. We are known for use of color, for using pattern on pattern, and bringing sort of a classical feel to really modern interiors. - Excellent. And Nicole, tell us a bit about yourself. - Hi, I'm Nicole Gibbons. I am also an interior designer. I started out, though, as a design blogger, then pivoted into becoming a full-time interior designer, working with private clients in and around New York City. And now I've sort of pivoted again, still a designer at heart, but I'm now I'm the founder and CEO of a direct to consumer paint startup called Clare. And we make the whole process of buying paint for your home super easy. - That's so great change is good, so I'm all for it Nicole. Let's jump in. So, you know, design trends can be really hard to navigate as a design editor, it's something that I'm always paying attention to. It informs our editorial content, both for the magazine and our website. But I think for the average design enthusiasts it can be really overwhelming to figure out how to make these trends your own. So what do you all recommend? Young, I'll start with you. Any advice on how to navigate design trends? - I think for me, if there's a trend best to try to avoid it because that means you're going to be falling in with a million other people and then your house might look like everyone else's. Like modern farmhouse, cottagecore, those two things like, make me a little concerned because, you know, that means it's become, this design trend has become canned. However, there's certain things about it that are really great. I love the idea of taking an old farm house and bringing it to the modern age, adding modern elements to something that's really old and classic. It's a way of cherishing our history. Cottagecore for instance, I adore cottages, anything romantic, pretty, sweet, I am all over it. But do you really want to be sort of in that niche, you know, maybe think of ways that you could bring your own personality to any design trend and make it yours. - That's great advice. How about you, Stacey? What do you recommend as far as experimenting with design trends and not feeling intimidated by them? - Yes. I'm probably going to echo a bit of what Young said, about avoiding trends. I avoid trends. I always recommend when you design that you embrace who you are. I think your space should, you might end up incorporating some trend or trends but that's because that's what you like. Your home should be an expression of you. So if you like Chevrons, because I know chevrons are under that category of being antiquated right now, but if you like chevrons by all means, embrace them. So again, if you, basically whatever you like in your home, whatever your taste is, that's what you should embrace and how you should decorate. - And I know Nicole, you agree a lot. You know, your design philosophy is all about making sure that your home reflects your personal style. So what's your take on trends and really making it feel more accessible to you? - Yeah, I definitely echo all of the same things that Young and Stacey said. I think your home should absolutely reflect who you are. And when you think about it just from a practical standpoint, your home is the biggest, one of the biggest investments you'll ever make. And so, especially as it relates to the more permanent decisions, things like tile and flooring and your furniture, the things, the big ticket items, and even some of your foundational elements, like your paint color, that you're probably not gonna want to change up every six months, you know, you want to choose things that you can live with for a very long time. And so I'm a big fan of timeless over trendy. However, I do think that there are certain areas where it is okay to experiment. And it just depends on, how the type of person you are. If you are the type of person that does like to change up your home a lot or do little seasonal decor swaps, I think that's when it's okay to maybe lean into something that's popular. So if there's a certain color and you want to refresh your tabletop for spring maybe you get the millennial pink plates. But I think when it comes to the real kind of permanent decisions and the foundation of your home I'd say keep it timeless because I can ensure you'll love it for a lot longer than you will whatever is the trend of the moment. - That's great. Those small upgrades that feels manageable to me. I think that's great advice. - You spend 30 bucks on a trendy vase, and you don't like it six months later, it's less of a loss or a, you know, kind of a money pit. then, you know, if you designed your entire home because you fell in love with the cottagecore trend. - So, so true. It's so true. So the pandemic is not over but we're close to being on the other side, fingers crossed. How has the concept of home changed for people? I mean, there's been a lot of talk about these multipurpose rooms that do triple duty. I mean, for me, I mean our living room functions in so many different ways, I've exercised in here, my daughter tackles school in here, we watch movies in here. It does so much for us. So just talk about what you've noticed considering the pandemic. Young, I'd love to hear your thoughts there. - Yeah, I think that for the first time families are really spending a lot of time together and you know using homes for work school, play, entertainment, exercise, we've all been exercising at home, not going to gyms. So, homes have had to be really multi-use, multifunctional, and yeah, I do yoga in my living room. And then I time it so no one's there, when I'm doing that. - Nothing wrong with that, Young, at all. - So, you know, we all, I think are changing in the ways that we think of our homes. People used to eat out all the time. We used to look outside for entertainment and now that's not happening as much. So homes are now just not one use. You might bring in a game table into your living room. You might make sure there's extra floor space where you might've had a chair. You might need desks in every bedroom, that's like a new one. I think in this time period, everyone has been like, I need a Zoom corner. How do I do that in my bedroom, so I can shut the door and I don't hear other Zooms going on. All of these-- - You've nailed that, by the way, Young, I have to say. Your Zooming corner is a plus for me. - This is my zoom corner in my office. - It's awesome. - Thank you. Those are all things that we now have to consider. And you know, a lot of adult children are coming back home to live with their families, like mine. And so they have work. They have school. How do you all fit together, and make it livable and harmonious? - Yeah. It's a lot to consider. Stacey, I'm curious to hear what you think about how, you know, the concept of home has changed for people considering the pandemic and everything that's going on right now. - Yes, as Young spoke I was smiling a lot, because if I were to move my camera to my left, I'm sitting at the Dorma of my, well, it might be antiquated to refer to it as the man-cave, but that is what it is. However, this is where I teach from and work. But in addition to that, I also have a three-year-old. Basically, I'm a prime example of re-imagining your spaces and navigating the pandemic. To the left of me, I have what you would probably categorize as a daycare because my daughter, she comes into the space but, in order to distract her, I have one of those mini trampolines. I also have a slide for her. - Wow, design for your daughter for your home, Stacey. Wow. Perfect setup. - Yes. So, to answer that question we've had to reimagine our spaces and how we live, and we all have to function within that space. So I had to figure out a way that I could teach and also be a mother. And that is what many people have had to do because they were stuck and still are at home. So reimagining your spaces, getting creative, thinking outside of the box to navigate this pandemic. - That's interesting. And Nicole, I mean, from your experience, have you found that people are focusing on one room in their home or are they kind of trying to spruce up everything at one time? What have you noticed? - Yeah, I mean, I definitely think people are tackling their whole homes. You know, the average DIYer is doing it little by little and, you know, Stacey and Young, touched on how our homes are serving all of these multi-functions these days. But I think like for the average person, you know, all of us on this call, are probably the exceptions, because we all work in design and live and breathe it. And so we're constantly thinking about how our homes should look and function. But I think for the average person who's busy with their lives and their children and their jobs, they're not thinking about those things, but the pandemic forced them to, it forced them to evaluate how they feel in their home, how content or not they are with their homes' decor, and, you know, really understanding how important it is have a home that makes you feel good when you walk through the door. So I think what we're seeing, especially at Clare, you know we work with them, we have a wide variety of customers, we serve the masses. And so people are looking around at their white walls that they never bothered to paint and being like I really need to change this color because I'm so tired of white walls and I want to feel invigorated or I want to feel calm. You know, it's been a hectic year. I think people are kind of room by room tackling those paint projects and turning their houses into homes that they love, and I think the pandemic really made everyone reevaluate just the overall role that home plays in our lives. And, you know, I think even after the pandemic is over, hopefully that will be soon, I still think people are gonna take a while to kind of assimilate back into the real world as it used to be. And so I still, I believe we're still going to see people doing a lot more entertaining at home you know, kind of, and wanting their home to reflect who they are so that when they do hosts and gather and start to kind of invite people back in again they're really proud of the space that they have and that it's conducive to, you know, kind of that new lifestyle that centered around the home. - That's so true. Decorating and renovating it's a never ending project. So I wanna switch gears a bit. You know, flooring really sets the foundation for your home, the Pergo Extreme collection, it has great flooring solutions that look like authentic wood or tile, but they're much more durable for high traffic areas of the home, like kitchens, playrooms, pool houses, I wanna open up this question to the entire panel. Where would you suggest using luxury vinyl flooring instead of real wood or tile? You know, they're ideal for these high traffic areas, as I mentioned. So I'm curious to hear your take. Stacey, let's start with you. - I love that those kinds of floorings are very durable and tend to be waterproof. The laundry room typically may not be a high traffic area but I think that would be a great space, even a basement that is possibly serving as a media space. I think that would be a great place to, for, you know those luxury type flooring but more on the affordable option. - Great ideas. How about you, Young, what's your take on luxury vinyl flooring and where, where does it work best? - We have projects where, especially in a ski house, when you're coming in with your boots and equipment, you know, tile will crack and wood will, you know, pit. So you have to use synthetic flooring, so vinyl is a really good option areas where you're doing sports, for sure need vinyl flooring. And, you know, it had been in the past hard to find things that looked really luxurious. So the trends that we're seeing there, things that are stone look, wood look more, even, you know, off the charts like blue wacky patterns, you know, it could be just about anything but there's definitely a use for luxury vinyl because it's a necessity. - I agree, Nicole, any thoughts on luxury vinyl flooring? - Yeah. I mean I think in addition to just the practical applications in spaces that like get a lot of traffic and moisture and whatever, I think it's also a good budget friendly alternative to hardwoods. If you are, you know, constrained and you still want to get that look, it's a really nice way to bring in the look of wood flooring, with an easier labor install, as well as like, probably a little lower overall costs. So it's a good budget friendly option for someone who you know, maybe doesn't have the budget for something else. - I agree. And we can't talk about trends without considering sustainability. I think it's fair to say that people are really being more thoughtful about what they're bringing into their home. As far as some of the sustainable home design trends that you know are popping up right now, What can you share, Stacey? I'm curious to hear your thoughts there. - I tend to gravitate towards natural made pieces, I'm now, I am finding I've always loved wooden pieces, but especially now natural pieces that embrace nature and bring a bit of that in. I think that's great. People since they've been at home, they're concerned with what they're breathing in, the toxicity in materials. And I think they have actually taken a conscious effort to choose eco-friendly pieces to create that space that is green eco-friendly and healthy. - I agree. And I feel like that plays into global inspired interiors. You know, we're seeing a lot of reten pieces right now. Nicole, any thoughts on global design in general? I know you love to mix and match and, you know pair modern with vintage. So I'm just curious to hear your take there. - Yeah, I mean, I love global design. I love pattern, I love ethnic inspired in patterns. I'm a big fan of, you know, the teeth prints and, you know eat cats and all of those like amazing things. And they're so rich in color and I think that's why I'm drawn to them, generally. So I think like, you know, mixing up those elements in your home makes it so much more interesting and layering in those sort of global pieces can really lend more personality to your space. - I agree. And Young, any thoughts on global design? I mean, people are eager to get back on planes. You know, they're really thinking about how to weave some of those cultural influences into their space. So what's your take there? - I think global design has always been with us. At the moment people traveled they wanted to bring things that were beautiful and amazing that they saw on their travels. You know, the silk road, you saw a mix of Arabic, Chinese, Roman, cultures mixing together, and you've got these fantastic patterns, fantastic artworks. And the more we can mix and collide and borrow from each other, the more rich culture will be more rich, our interior decorative arts will be. And I think people really love, as you say, traveling and bringing these things back, it shows a kind of understanding, openness and the layering and richness in your design. So, I think that's very important going forward. - Excellent. Okay, so we're winding down and I have a loaded question for you guys. I want to hear the one design trend that you really want to go away. And one trend that we can expect to see in the year ahead. So Stacey, let's start with you. I can't wait to hear your response. - I might be biased, but goodness, I just want more color. - Yeah. - More color please. - I understand. - And I do have white walls in my home. This is not about banning white walls, at all, but I would just love to see a little bit more vibrancy. I know people are hesitant and tend to be hesitant when it comes to embracing color, but it could just be in your accessories. You could start there, start small, but color. And being at home, I'm sure people have realized that the impact, the existence of color has on one's mood. Behind me, this was a conscious effort to add some joy in this small space of mine. So don't be afraid of color at all. I want more color. - Yeah, it changes the feel of a room, you're so right about that. Nicole, one trend that you really just can't stand right now, and one that you think we'll see more of next year. - Yeah, I mean, honestly, Stacey took all the words out of my mouth because that's the first thing that came to mind even before she gave her answer. You know, I think that there is this look that I think is lovely, and it's that California casual, all white, you know, you guys are, y'all all know the look, right. Popularized by a handful of really big influencers on Instagram and just overall it's I think it's kind of a preferred aesthetic in California. And I think it's a really beautiful look, but I am kind of tired of seeing that, and I would love to see more color. And it's not, it's not about the decor, but it's just, you could, so many of those spaces that I see that, that have that California vibe, with all white walls would look so much more stunning with bold color. And, you know, I think color, while it can be trendy is sort of timeless. It's almost like, you know it's the color that speaks to you, the color that creates the mood that you want to feel. So like, for example, it's not that white isn't passe trend but it's just this idea that people are and have embraced this, like all white look that at times when especially when not done well and not layered well, just feel sterile and void of personality, so I would love to see people embrace more color as well and yeah. - I completely agree. Young, I'm so curious to hear about the one trend that you want to disappear and one that you think we can expect to see more of in the year ahead. - So, I hate to hate on design trends but I am going to share this one with you. - Please do. - It really bothers me how we're seeing a lot of these new McMansions that are kind of modern farmhouse, they're white, they have black metal doors, they have metal roofs. They all look the same. And I think, you know, it's, they're building a lot of them upstate where a lot of homes are older and instead of refurbishing what's existing, and I know it takes a lot of effort to add modern amenities to an old house, but I just feel like these houses are gonna be like the houses from the eighties that no one wants today. You know, it's like, it becomes this canned mock, you know, mass product. And, you know, I think there could be a way to build a house like that, they can be really, really attractive once you add personality to it, you know, just changing a little bit, being maybe thoughtful about the windows, maybe adding some molding detail. So yeah, I predict that that's to be like ah, the trend that you hate soon. - Great, I agree. So, you know, any final thoughts as we wrap up, as people are considering trends, and trying to pinpoint exactly what to incorporate into their spaces. Stacey final thoughts before we close. - I think I started with these thoughts and I'm going to end with the same thing. Be yourself. Your home should be an expression of who you are. Not necessarily, an exhibition of trends, express yourself. - I love that. How about you, Nicole, last words for our audience? - Yeah, I think create a home that makes you happy, a home that you'll love every single time you're in any room in your home. You know, so many people will just have their space be good enough, and then boom, there's a pandemic. And you realize how much you just dislike, so really invest in creating a home you love, and embrace color. - Love that. Young, last thoughts on embracing design trends. - Don't fill your rooms with too many Instagram ideas. You know. - So true. - It will be tragic. - I totally agree. - Choose who you are and be true to it. - I love that. Well thank you for joining us, you know, thanks to our panelists. Some businesses will be requiring masks. Others will not. That will be the new norm for at least the next few weeks, particularly in Ohio. Gov. Mike DeWine has lifted the state's mask mandate for vaccinated Ohioans, effective immediately. All of the state's health orders will be lifted on June 2, clearing the way for unvaccinated individuals to also shed the mask. But it's important to clarify that even when mandates are lifted, some retailers may keep them in place. "I'm still going to wear my mask. I'm fully vaccinated," said Jessica Chapman, who was shopping at Walmart Friday evening. "I don't see a point to stop wearing them until everybody is vaccinated or over 80 percent is vaccinated."Lifting these health orders will not prevent a business from imposing its own requirements, DeWine has said. Businesses and schools across the state are permitted to make their own decisions on the best way to keep customers, employees and students safe, state guidance reads. Below is a list of major area retailers who have announced updates on their masking policy. We will update this story as more announcements are made.KROGER: Masks still required "The Kroger Family of Companies continues to require everyone in our stores to wear masks.""We appreciate Gov. DeWine’s thoughtful approach to distancing and mask restrictions that acknowledge businesses' need for continued flexibility to implement safety protocols."TRADER JOES: Not needed for vaccinated"We encourage customers to follow the guidance of health officials, including, as appropriate, CDC guidelines that advise customers who are fully vaccinated are not required to wear masks while shopping."WALMART: Not needed for vaccinated"Beginning (May 14), vaccinated customers and members are welcome to shop without a mask, and we will continue to request that non-vaccinated customers and members wear face coverings in our stores and clubs. We will update the signage in our facilities to reflect this."TARGET: Masks still required"Target will continue to require all of our coronavirus safety measures in all stores, including masks and social distancing, while we review guidance from the CDC and evaluate the guidance we offer our team and guests."MEIJER: Masks still required"To help ensure the continued health and safety of its team members and customers, Meijer will continue to require face coverings be worn by anyone entering a Meijer store or Meijer Express station at all of our locations throughout the Midwest. While customers who have medical conditions that prevent them from wearing face coverings are exempt, we ask for your continued support as we work through these unprecedented times."JUNGLE JIM'S: Masks still required "Per Governor DeWine’s mandate, everyone must wear a mask while in our Fairfield & Eastgate location until further notice. We also ask that all guests follow the CDC recommended guidelines and remember to leave 6 ft between you and other guests while shopping. If you chose to shop in a group, please keep your group close together."HOME DEPOT: Masks still required"We haven't made any changes to our mask policy"Their website reads all stores are requiring associates and customers to wear non-medical face masks in storesALDI: Masks still required"The health and safety of our employees, customers and the communities we serve will always be our highest priority. With that focus in mind, face coverings are required to enter all ALDI stores."WHOLE FOODS: Masks still required"Whole Foods Market requires all customers to wear face coverings while shopping in our stores to protect the health and safety of our Team Members and communities. Whole Foods Market provides face masks at the entrance of all stores for customers who do not have their own face covering." COSTCO: Not needed for vaccinated in U.S. locations where there are no state or local mask mandates"We will allow members and guests who are fully vaccinated to enter Costco without a face mask or face shield," in those areas, the company said in a message posted to its website Friday. "Costco continues to recommend that all members and guests, especially those who are at higher risk, wear a mask or shield."
